Population density of the spiders (Micryphantidae and Lycosidae) in the two Paddy field at Suweon and Iri was studied following single root-zone application of carbofurans encapsulea and liquid-formulated and two to four paddy water applications of carbofuran to rice plants. In two field tests, the spider populations were reduced In all insecticide treatments. Among them, the reduction was greater in the capsule placement of carbofuran than in the liquid injection and broadcast of carbofuran. Their reduction was also enlarged with the increase of application rate of insecticide. The significant reduction of spider population in root-tone appliration of carbofuran was considered due to the food-chain toxicity on the spider-hopper system.
Some experiment were conducted to evaluate the joint toxic action of carbofuran(2,3-Dihydro-2, 2-dimethyl-benzofuranyl methyl carbamate) and diazinon (0.0-Diethyl-0-(2-isopropyl-6-methyl-e-pyrimidinyl)-0-thionophosphate) against 3rd-instar larvae of the common cutworm, Agrotis fucosa (Butler). Acetone solutions of carbofuran or diazinon or mixture of these two insecticides, were topically applied to the mesonotum of the insect in a constant volume of $1.0{\mu}l$ per larva by means of Burkard microapplicator. Joint toxic action of carbofuran and diazinon for 3rd-instar larva of common cutworm was synergistic. The maximum synergistic effect might be obtained when the ratio of carbofuran to diazinon was 4.8 : 5.2.
Control effects of carbofuran soil incorporation just before transplanting on the early occur-ring rice insect pests were studied in the rice field. Also, its residual effects on the brown planthopper (BPH) were studied by pot experiments. Carbofurn soil incorporation in late May was much more effective in controlling the early occurring rice insect pests such as small brown planthopper, green leafhopper and rice stem borer than carbofuran broadcasting or diazinon (3G) + BPMC (50% EC) treatment in mid June. Residual effects of carbofuran soil incorportaion on the female adult BPH decreased ca. a half one month after treatment. However, its residual effects on the next generation of the BPH lasted much longer; control effects on the next generation were above 90 and 70% on 37 and 46 days after treatment, respectively. From these results, it is thought that carbofuran soil incorporation just before rice transplanting can be a good control method to the early occurring rice insect pests and the brown planthopper immigrating during June. Also, it can suppress immigrating BPH popula¬tion moderately in early July.

N-Dimethoxyphosphinothionyl carbofuran, PSC, has a high insecticidal activity and low mammalian toxicity. Ten N-phosphinothionyl carbofuran derivatives were synthesized and their insecticidal activities were determined against brown plant hopper (Nilaparvata lugens), green peach aphid (Myzus persicae), diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella), and two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae). Green peach aphid, diamondback mea and brown plant hopper were controlled over 90% by application of 125 ppm, 125 ppm, and 63 ppm, respectively, of carbosulfan. Two hundred and fifty ppm of newly synthesized compounds could control most of brown plant hopper and diamondback moth. Especially, insecticidal activities of compound 10 against brown plant hopper, diamondback moth, and green peach aphid were similar to those of carbosulfan. Our results show that the newly synthesized derivatives of NV-phosphinothionyl carbofuran have a similar insecticidal activity to carbosulfan.
To study fate of carbofuran in paddy system, C-14 labelled carbofuran was applied to paddy water containing rice seedlings and time course study was made on the distribution, metabolism and chemical transformation of the systemic insecticide. Carbofuran was readily absorbed by plant root and translocated to shoots where most of the radioactivities were confined to leaf tips. The fact that gradual increases in radioactivities of both aqueous phase extracts and non-extractable fractions of plants (shoots and root) increased with incubation is taken as an evidence that reactions (phase I and II) proceed in rice plants. Carbofuran and its five metabolites were all detected by TLC in organic phase extracts of paddy plants or soil. Evidence was put forward that carbofuran and its five metabolites were all identified as aglycones of conjugates. 7-benzofuranol and 3-hydroxycarbofuran were the most abundant aglycones. Soil microbes appears to have little effects on the metabolism of carbofuran. They increased radioactivity of non-extractable fraction and reduced that of organic phase extracts of paddy soil.
The bimolecular inhibition rate constants of carbofuran and N-dimethylphosphinothioyl carbofuran(PSC) to acetylcholinesterase(AChE) were $7.7{\times}10^{5}\;M^{-1}{\cdot}min^{-1}$ and $1.2{\times}10^{3}\;M^{-1}{\cdot}min^{-1}$, respectively. These results showed that PSC required a bioactivation process for its toxic action because it didn't inhibit the target enzyme effectively. The potency of PSC as an inhibitor of AChE increased when PSC and AChE were incubated with microsomes fortified with NADPH compared with microsome alone. Piperonyl butoxide(PBO) addition to these coupled systems greatly reduced the inhibition of the target enzyme by blocking the bioactivation process. In vivo inhibition study of mouse brain AChE, $I_{50}$ value for AChE was 28 mg/kg for PSC and the value increased to 57 mg/kg when PBO was pretreated. This result showed that cytochrome $P_{450}$ would also play a role in the bioactivation process of PSC in vivo. And conversioin of carbofuran from PSC was 55 % in a chemical oxidation system using meta-chloroperoxybenzoic acid. The oxidative activation of PSC to carbofuran was shown to be essential for showing its toxicological action and cytochrome $P_{450}$ was identified as an important enzyme which participated in this process.
The Frog Embryo Teratogenesis Assay-Xenopus(FETAX) protocol was recently adopted as a valuable tool fur evaluating chemical toxicity and the effect of environmental contaminants in frogs. In this study, the teratogenecity of NiCl$_2$, Carbofuran, Diazinon were determined in the Korean frog, Rana dybowskii using the FETAX protocol. The mortality rate and the percentage of malformed larvae were investigated by probit analysis, The teratogenic concentrations(EC$_{50}$) of NiCl$_2$, Carbofuran and Diazinon were 0.4 and 1.6 and 1.9 mg/1. The embryolethal concentrations(LC$_{50}$) of NiCl$_2$, Carbofuran and Diazinon were 17.6 and 41.5 and 20.2mg/1. The teratogenic indices (TI=LC$_{50}$/EC$_{50}$) were 43.8 for NiCl$_2$, 26.0 for Carbofuran and 10.6 for Diazinon. NiCl$_2$, Carbofuran and Diazinon were shown to be potent teratogens for Rana dybowskii embryo, causing concentration related increase of edema, tail and abdomen. The study results reveal that NiCl$_2$, Carbofuran and Diazinon suppress the development of embryos at relatively low concentrations. Therefore, the Rana dybowskii embryo teratogenesis assay system was proven to be a useful tool to evaluate the toxicity of environmental pollutants.lutants.
Laboratory and greenhouse experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of root zone application of some systemic insecticides for control of the brown planthopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens, as one of the management option to minimize the adverse effects and maximize the efficacy of insecticide application. Five systemic insecticides, namely, carbofuran, carbosulfan, diazinon, ethoprophos and imidacloprid, as granular formulation were placed in the root zone and measured the mortality, fecundity, and nymphal survivorship of the planthopper. Diazinon and ethoprophos did not show the significant mortality of the BPH. When the BPH were inoculated at the day of carbofuran treatment, adult mortality was shown almost 100% at seven days after treatment and BPH nymphs were remained very few on rice at 25 days after treatment. When carbofuran were placed 10 days before the BPH inoculation, it showed almost 100% adult mortality after one day, and no nymphs were found until 25 day after inoculation. Efficacy of carbofuran on BPH when applied in 10 day-old rice was higher than in 30 day-old rice. These results indicated that the root zone application of carbofuran can control N. lugens effectively with less adverse effect to the natural enemies inhabited on rice plants.

Studies were conducted to investigate the effect of Carbofuran 3G on the density variation of rice pests and their natural enemies in case the insecticide was treated two times as compared with usual trials in paddy field. Even the two times application of Carbofuran 3G in the nursery boxes of machine transplanting and paddy water trials obtain same results to pests, small brown planthopper (Laodelphax striatllus), green rice leafhopper (Nephotettix cincticeps), brown planthorper (Nilaparvata lugens), white back planthopper (Sogotella furcifera), rice stem bore (Chilo suppressalis), rice stem maggot (Chlorops oryzae), rice thrips (cloethrips oryzae) as compared with usual trials. The density of natural enemies, spiders and egg parasite, Anagrus sp. of planthoppers in the two times application part of Carbofuran 3G increased 2.4 fold as compared with usual trials.
The control efficiency of the nematicides, aldicarb and carbofuran, in the population dynamics of the soybean cyst nematode(Heterodera glycines)was evaluated. Nematode viability, penetration and reproduction were examined in greenhouse experiments. Nematode viability(movement) was greatly reduced by aldicard, but mot by carbofuran. Penetration was inhibited by both chemicals. Percentages of Pentration relative to the untreated check 3 days after treatment were 0.4% and 1.7% for aldicarb and carbofuran, respectively. Systemic effect ot the nematicides were observed with both nematicides but effect was greater with aldicarb than with carbofuran. The total effect of the nematicides, applied ay the time of planting soybean in infested soil, appeared to be less than the sum of the contact and systemic effects on the initial population dynamics of H. glycines.
