The fundamental experiments for measuring soft x-ray characteristics from the vacuum capillary are described. These experiments were primarily performed in order to generate line spectra such as x-ray lasers. The generator consists of a high-voltage power supply, a polarity-inversion ignitron pulse generator, a turbo-molecular pump, and a radiation tube with a capillary. A high-voltage condenser of 200 nF in the pulse generator is charged up to 20 kV by the power supply, and the electric charges in the condenser are discharged to the capillary in the tube after closing the ignitron. During the discharge, weakly ionized plasma forms on the inner and outer sides of a capillary. In the present work, the pump evacuates air from the tube with a pressure of about 1 mPa, and a demountable capillary was developed in order to measure x-ray spectra according to changes in the capillary length. In this capillary, the anode (target) and cathode elements can be changed corresponding to the objectives. The capillary diameter is 2.0 mm, and the length is adjusted from 1 to 50 mm. When a capillary with aluminum anode and cathode electrodes was employed, both the cathode voltage and the discharge current almost displayed damped oscillations. The peak values of the voltage and current increased when the charging voltage was increased, and their maximum values were -10.8 kV and 4.7 kA, respectively. The x-ray durations observed by a 1.6 ${\mu}$m aluminum filter were less than 30 ${\mu}$s, and we detected the aluminum characteristic x-ray intensity using a 6.8 ${\mu}$m aluminum filter. In the spectrum measurement, two sets of aluminum and titanium electrodes were employed, and we observed multi-line spectra. The line photon energies seldom varied according to changes in the condenser charging voltage and to changes in the electrode element. In the case where the titanium electrode was employed, the line number decreased with corresponding decreases in the capillary length. Compared with incoherent visible light, these rays from the capillary were diffracted and diffused greatly after passing through two slits.
In this study, time-dependent numerical analysis was carried out to investigate the plasma jet impingement on a flat plate, and a compressible form of two-dimensional inviscid gas dynamics equations were solved using the flux corrected transport algorithm. The mathematical modeling of Joule heating in the polycarbonate capillary bore and the mass ablation from the bore wall was incorporated in the numerical analysis and the series of computation was performed for three cases depending on the distance of the opposing plate from the capillary exit. The computational results reveal that the presence of the opposing plate does not affect the flow conditions inside the capillary when compared to the case of open-air plasma discharge. In the exterior region, the flow structure shows the typical supersonic underexpanded jet which consists of the strong Mach disk in front of the opposing plate and the barrel shock at the side of the jet. It is found that the shock evolution becomes more quasi-steady when the plate distance decreases. Also, the effects of the distance between the capillary bore exit and the opposing plate on the flow conditions along the opposing plate are investigated and the pressure variation on the plate shows more complicated interaction between the plasma discharge and the opposing plate when the location of plate becomes closer to the capillary exit.

The scope of this work is to determine and compare the effect of electron temperature ($T_e$) and number density ($N_e$) on the yield rate and concentration of reactive chemical species ($^{\bullet}OH$, $H_2O_2$ and $O_3$) in an argon, air and oxygen injected negative DC (0-4 kV) capillary discharge with water flow(0.1 L/min). The discharge was created between tungsten pin-to pin electrodes (${\Phi}=0.5mm$) separated by a variable distance (1-2 mm) in a quartz capillary tube (2 mm inner diameter, 4 mm outer diameter), with various gas injection rates (100-800 sccm). Optical emission spectroscopy (OES) of the hydrogen Balmer lines was carried out to investigate the line shapes and intensities as functions of the discharge parameters such as the type of gas, gas injection rate and inter electrode gap distances. The intensity ratio method was used to calculate $T_e$ and Stark broadening of Balmer ${\beta}$ lines was adopted to determine $N_e$. The effects of $T_e$ and $N_e$ on the reactive chemical species formation were evaluated and presented. The enhancement in yield rate of reactive chemical species was revealed at the higher electron temperature, higher gas injection rates, higher discharge power and larger inter-electrode gap. The discharge with oxygen injection was the most effective one for increasing the reactive chemical species concentration. The formation of reactive chemical species was shown more directly related to $T_e$ than $N_e$ in a flowing water gas injected negative DC capillary discharge.

Recently, we developed a simple thermopneumatic micropump having neither a membrane nor a valve. This micropump discharges liquid by a thermopneumatic pressure and refill by a capillary attraction. In case of the micropump driven by the capillary attraction, the flow characteristic depends mainly on the geometry of the micropump. In this paper, we investigated the influence of the geometry of the micropump on the performance of the micropump to illustrate the properness of the micropump shape. We analyzed the micropump characteristics of six types having different geometries by FVM simulation with a commercial CFD tool. Also we fabricated the micropumps with PDMS and glass by micromachining, and tested the performances. The simulation and the test results illustrate that the discharge volume and the discharge time depend on the chamber volume. The expansion angle of the inlet channel location has influence on the refill time, while the front air channel direction has influence on the backward flow loss.

The Loop Heat Pipe (LHP) operates to pump the working fluid by means of the capillary force in a wick structure. Particularly, it is difficult to design and manufacture the evaporator consisted of a grooved container and a compensation chamber as well as the wick structure. This study is related to design and manufacture the grooved container coupled with wick structure, the properties of the wick structure such as the permeability, the porosity, and the maximum capillary pressure were measured to apply the cooling technology for Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT). The container of the LHP was manufactured by the electrical discharge process and the wick structure was sintered with the nickel particle by an axial-press apparatus with the pulse electronic discharge. As results, the properties of the wick were experimentally obtained about 60% of the porosity, 35kPa of the maximum capillary force and $1.53{\times}10-13m2$ of the permeability.
For the safe operation of an air conditioner, the liquid car η 'over to compressors should be minimized and compressors should be operated in the specified region of suction and discharge pressures recommended by compressor manufactures. In this study, a capillary assisted tandem-type airconditioner was considered. A variable speed outdoor fan was used to control operating points of the system. Test results showed the possibilities to move system operating points to the safe region by controlling the speed of an outdoor fan.
Two ZnSe loss plates were installed in the resonator of waveguide CO2 laser which consisted of Pyrex capillary tube in order to change the internal loss. By rotating the loss plates, the output variations with the internalloss was measured on various discharge conditions. The variations could be explained by the Rigrod theory. and the saturation power and the unsaturated gain coefficient were determined by fitting of the experimental results. It was found that the saturation power increased while the unsaturated gain coefficient reduced as the discharge current or the gas flow rate increased.reased.

Mesh screen modeling and liquid propellant discharge simulation of surface tension tank were performed using commercial CFD software Flow-3d. $350{\times}2600$, $400{\times}3000$ and $510{\times}3600$ DTW mesh screen were modeled using macroscopic porous media model. Porosity, capillary pressure, and drag coefficient were assigned for each mesh screen model, and bubble point simulations were performed. The mesh screen model was validated with the experimental data. Based on the screen modeling, liquid propellant discharge simulation from PMD tank was performed. NTO was assigned as the liquid propellant, and void was set to flow into the tank inlet to achieve an initial volume flow rate of liquid propellant in $3{\times}10^{-3}g$ acceleration condition. The intial flow pressure drop through the mesh screen was approximately 270 Pa, and the pressure drop increased with time. Liquid propellant discharge was sustained until the flow pressure drop reached approximately 630 Pa, which was near the estimated bubble point value of the screen model.
