  • Multilayer capacitors with high ripple current and high capacitance were manufactured. The electrical properties of these capacitors were characterized for potential application for DC-link capacitors in hybrid electric vehicle inverters. Internal electrode structures were designed to achieve high capacitance and reliability. A single multilayer capacitor showed $0.46{\mu}F/cm^3$ of capacitance, 0.65% of dielectric loss, and 1450 V to 1650 V of dielectric breakdown voltage depending on the design of the internal electrode. The capacitor module designed with several multilayer capacitors gave a total capacitance of $450{\mu}F$, which is enough for hybrid electric vehicles. In particular, an equivalent series resistance of $4.5m{\Omega}$ or less will result in 60 $A_{rms}$, thereby reaching the allowed ripple current for hybrid electric vehicles.

  • Multilevel active neutral-point-clamped (ANPC) converter combines the advantages of three-level ANPC converter and multilevel flying capacitor (FC) converter. However, multilevel ANPC converter often suffers from capacitor voltage balancing problems. In order to solve the capacitor voltage balancing problems for five-level ANPC converter, phase-shifted pulse width modulation (PS-PWM) is used, which generally provides natural voltage balancing ability. However, the natural voltage balancing ability depends on the load conditions and converter parameters. In order to eliminate voltage deviations under steady-state and dynamic conditions, the active voltage-balancing control (AVBC) methods of floating capacitors and dc-link capacitors based on PS-PWM are proposed. First, the neutral-point current is regulated to balance the neutral-point voltage by injecting zero-sequence voltage. After that, the duty cycles of the redundant switch combinations are adjusted to balance the floating-capacitor voltages by introducing moderating variables for each of the phases. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed AVBC methods is verified by experimental results.

  • Conventionally, in order to reduce the ac components of the dc-link capacitors of the two-level Half-Bridge Voltage Source Inverter (HB-VSI), high dc-link capacitances are required. This necessitates the employment of short-lifetime and bulky electrolytic capacitors. In this paper, an analysis for the performance of low dc-link capacitances-based HB-VSI is presented to elucidate its ability to generate an enhanced fundamental output voltage magnitude without increasing the voltage rating of the involved switches. This feature is constrained by the load displacement factor. The introduced enhancement is due to the ac components of the capacitors' voltages. The presented approach can be employed for multi-phase systems through using multi single-phase HB-VSI(s). Mathematical analysis of the proposed approach is presented in this paper. To ensure a successful operation of the proposed approach, a closed loop current controller is examined. An expression for the critical dc-link capacitance, which is the lowest dc-link capacitance that can be employed for unipolar capacitors' voltages, is derived. Finally, simulation and experimental results are presented to validate the proposed claims.

  • The charge redistribution digital-to-analog converter(CR-DAC) is often used for successive approximation register analog-to-digital converter(SAR ADC) that requiring low power consumption and small circuit area. However, CR-DAC is required 2 to the power of N unit capacitors to generate reference voltage for successive approximation of the N-bit SAR ADC, and many unit capacitors occupy large circuit area and consume more power. In order to improve this problem, this paper proposes SAR ADC using series capacitor DAC. The series capacitor DAC is required 2(1+N) unit capacitors to generate reference voltage for successive approximation and charges only two capacitors of the reference generation block. Because of these structural characteristics, the SAR ADC using series capacitor DAC can reduce the power consumption and circuit area. Proposed SAR ADC was designed in CMOS 180nm process, and at 1.8V supply voltage and 500kS/s sampling rate, proposed 6-bit SAR ADC have signal-to-noise and distortion ratio(SNDR) of 36.49dB, effective number of bits(ENOB) of 5.77-bit, power consumption of 294uW.

  • The DC part of the DC microgrid power conversion system uses capacitors for buffers of charge and discharge energy for smoothing voltage and plays important roles such as high frequency component absorption, power balancing, and voltage ripple reduction. The capacitor uses an aluminum electrolytic capacitor, which has advantages of capacity, low price, and relatively fast charging/discharging characteristics. Aluminum electrolytic capacitors(AEC) have previous advantages, but over time, the capacity of the capacitors decreases due to deterioration and an increase in internal temperature, resulting in a decrease in use efficiency or an accident such as steam extraction due to electrolyte evaporation. It is necessary to take measures to prevent accidents because the failure diagnosis and detection of such capacitors are a very important part of the long-term operation, safety of use, and reliability of the power conversion system because the failure of the capacitor leads to not only a single problem but also a short circuit accident of the power conversion system.

  • In this study, ultra high-voltage (170kV AC), reliable 80pF mica capacitors for partial discharge system application were investigated. For capacitors design, Program was developed to sampling of series and parallel parameters. Mica was used as the dielectric of the capacitors. Using the conservative design rule, over 3 individual 50$\mu$m thick mica sheets with a size of 30mm$\times$35mm were used with lead foils to form a parallel capacitor element and 20 mica sheets were interleaved with lead foils to form a series stack of parallel capacitor element to meet the requirements of the capacitors. The dimension of the fabricated 80pF capacitor for 17kV AC were 90mm$\times$90mm. The high-frequency characteristics of the capacitance (C) and dissipation factor (D) of the developed capacitors were measured using a capacitance meter. The developed capacitor exhibited C of 79.5pF, had D of 0.001% over the frequency ranges of 150kHz to 50MHz, had a self-resonant frequency of 65MHz.

  • Ths paper presents an optimization method which determines locations and size of capacitors simultaneously while minimizing power losses and improving voltage profile in radial distribution systems. Especially, the cost function associated with capacitor pla.cerrent is considered as step function due to banks of standard discrete capacities. Genetic algorithms(GA) are used to obtain efficiently the solution of the cost function associated with capacitors which is non-continuous and non-differentiable function. The strings in GA consist of the node nwnber index and size of capacitors to be installed. The length mutation operator, which is able to change the length of strings in each generation, is used. The proposed Jrethod which determines locations and size of capacitors simultaneously can reduce power losses and improve voltage proftle with capacitors of minimum size. Its efficiency is proved through the arolication in radial distribution systems.ystems.

  • Metal-ferroelectric-semiconductor(MFS) capacitors by using rapid thermal annealed $LiNbO_3$/Si structures were successfully fabricated and demonstrated nonvolatile memory operations of the MFS capacitors. The C-V characteristics of MFS capacitors showed a hysteresis loop due to the ferroelectric nature of the $LiNbO_3$thin film. The dielectric constant of the $LiNbO_3$film calculated from the capacitance in the accumulation region in the capacitance-voltage(C-V) curve was about 25. The gate leakage current density of MFS capacitor using a platinum electrode showed the least value of $1{\times}10^{-8}\textrm{A/cm}^2$ order at the electric field of 500 kV/cm. The minimum interface trap density around midgap was estimated to be about $10^{11}/cm^2$.eV. The typical measured remnant polarization(2Pr) value was about 1.2 $\mu\textrm{C/cm}^2$, in an applied electric field of $\pm$ 300 kv/cm. The ferroelectric capacitors showed no polarization degradation up to about $10^{10}$ switching cycles when subjected to symmetric bipolar voltage pulse in the 500 kHz.

  • High quality $Si_3N_4$ metal-insulator-metal (MIM) capacitors were realized by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD). Titanium nitride (TiN) adapted as a diffusion barrier reduced the interfacial reaction between $Si_3N_4$ dielectric layer and aluminum metal electrode showing neither hillock nor observable precipitate along the interface. The capacitance and the current-voltage characteristics of the MIM capacitors showed that the minimum thickness of $Si_3N_4$ layer should be limited to 500 $\AA$ under the present process, below which most of the capacitors were electrically shorted resulting in the devastation of on-wafer yield. According to the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) on the cross-sectional microstructure of the capacitors, the dielectric breakdown was caused by slit-like voids formed at the interface between TiN and $Si_3N_4$ layers when the thickness of $Si_3N_4$ layer was less than 500 $\AA$. Based on the calculation of thermally-induced residual stress, the formation of voids was understood from the mechanistic point of view.

  • In general, the battery and the(electric) condenser are pictured as electrical energy storage devices. Although there were lots of inventions and utilizations of morden conveniences according to enormous growth of the science and technologies after the Industrial Revolution, a speed of technology development on these devices being closely used in civilized human lives and many electric or electronic systems as a core component are relatively slower to the other fields of technologies. Nevertheless, based on a remarkable progress of the material science and technologies for the last ten years, a new type of electrical energy storage device so called as 'electrochemical capacitors' are being developed and used practically. The electrochemical capacitors exhibit their own characteristics of much enhanced capacitance over the conventional condensers and also distinctively exhibit a longer lift time and higher power capability that the nickel hydrogen batteries and secondary batteries such as lithium ion and polymer batteries does not show up so for. Hence, in this paper, it is intended to introduce a fundamental understanding and updated technology trends on the electrochemical capacitors.
