  • The objective of this study was to determine the effects of protein sources and roughage (R) to concentrate (C) ratio on in vitro fermentation parameters using a gas production technique. The experimental design was a $2{\times}5$ factorial arrangement in a completely randomized design (CRD). Factor A was 2 levels of protein sources yeast fermented cassava chip protein (YEFECAP) and soybean meal (SBM) and factor B was 5 levels of roughage to concentrate (R:C) ratio at 80:20, 60:40, 40:60, 20:80, and 0:100, respectively. Rice straw was used as a roughage source. It was found that gas production from the insoluble fraction (b) of YEFECAP supplemented group was significantly higher (p<0.05) than those in SBM supplemented group. Moreover, the intercept value (a), gas production from the insoluble fraction (b), gas production rate constants for the insoluble fraction (c), potential extent of gas production (a+b) and cumulative gas production at 96 h were influenced (p<0.01) by R:C ratio. In addition, protein source had no effect (p>0.05) on ether in vitro digestibility of dry matter (IVDMD) and organic (IVOMD) while R:C ratio affected the IVDMD and IVOMD (p<0.01). Moreover, YEFECAP supplanted group showed a significantly increased (p<0.05) total VFA and $C_3$ while $C_2$, $C_2:C_3$ and $CH_4$ production were decreased when compared with SBM supplemented group. In addition, a decreasing R:C ratio had a significant effect (p<0.05) on increasing total VFA, $C_3$ and $NH_3$-N, but decreasing the $C_2$, $C_2:C_3$ and CH4 production (p<0.01). Furthermore, total bacteria, Fibrobacter succinogenes, Ruminococcus flavefaciens and Ruminococcus albus populations in YEFECAP supplemented group were significantly higher (p<0.05) than those in the SBM supplemented group while fungal zoospores, methanogens and protozoal population remained unchanged (p>0.05) as compared between the two sources of protein. Moreover, fungal zoospores and total bacteria population were significantly increased (p<0.01) while, F. succinogenes, R. flavefaciens, R. albus, methanogens and protozoal population were decreased (p<0.01) with decreasing R:C ratio. In conclusion, YEFECAP has a potential for use as a protein source for improving rumen fermentation efficiency in ruminants.

  • In this study, it was confirmed whether the cooling water bypass ratio of packing for plume abatement matched designed value during winter operation of combined cycle power plant. Designed operating wet bulb temperature of the plume abatement cooling tower with 29 Gcal/h capacity had a range from $13^{\circ}C$ to $-20^{\circ}C$, while its designed bypass ratio was from 0 % to 78%, so that increasing rate of the designed bypass ratio was $2.36%/^{\circ}C$ when the external temperature decreased. When the wet bulb temperature at cooling tower inlet had a range from $7.8^{\circ}C$ to $-11.8^{\circ}C$ in a normal operation, it was measured that actual bypass ratio of packing for plume abatement had a range from 23.8 % to 74.3%. While increasing rate of the actual bypass ratio was $2.71%/^{\circ}C$ in a range from $7.8^{\circ}C$ to $-9.55^{\circ}C$, it was $1.61%/^{\circ}C$ under $-10^{\circ}C$ in cold weather condition according to atmospheric temperature drop, therefore it was confirmed that the increasing rate of the bypass ratio for packing was lowered than its design.

  • To compare the denitrification efficiency, this study used molasses and methanol were used as external carbon sources. Specific experimental conditions were classified according to C/N ratio conditions. The batch test showed that the denitrification efficiency increased as C/N ratios of molasses and methanol rose. The most suitable C/N ratio of molasses turned out 4:1 considering the concentration of the residue chemical oxygen demand (COD) and the denitrification efficiency, which was 91.4%. Specific denitrification rate (SDNR) drawn as a kinetic factor demonstrated that molasses and methanol showed similar SDNR values as C/N ratios of molasses and methanol increased. Under the condition of C/N ratio 4:1, 0.0292 g $NO_3{^-}-N$ removal/g mixed liquor volatile suspended solid (MLVSS)/day (molasses), 0.0299 g $NO_3{^-}-N$ removal/g MLVSS/day (methanol) were found. Sludge adapted to molasses showed that Bacterium Pseudomonas sp. and Bergeylla sp. dominated through an analysis of microbial community. In addition, some bacteria were high convergences than the variety of microbial community. Accordingly, it was assumed that molasses focus on growing microorganisms specialized in denitrification and applied as a replaceable external carbon source that can enhance denitrification performance.

  • In this study, the optimal operation parameters of MLE(Modified Ludzack-Ettinger) process treating the liquid supernatant separated from the slurry excreta of swine feedlot was studied as a promising biological treatment process. The nitrogen removal characteristics with different volume ratio between nitrification and denitrification reactor and the operational effect with different nitrogen loading rate, and different C/N($COD_{Cr}/TKN$) ratio were investigated. Based on the laboratory results, pilot MLE plant was operated to examine the effect of ambient temperature for five months including winter. The denitrification reactor which is 20% of total volume was proposed as the most optimal volume fraction for nitrification and denitrification. The optimum ratios of F/M and $F_N/M$ were increased with increase of the C/N ratio. However, optimum F/M ratio was changed more rapidly than $F_N/M$ ratio with increase of the C/N ratio. Therefore, MLE process is desirable to be controlled by F/M ratio in the range of high C/N ratio and by $F_N/M$ ratio in the range of low C/N ratio. Pilot MLE plant showed the higher removal efficiencies of COD and TKN in winter than in summer and was operated most stably at the temperature of $20{\sim}25^{\circ}C$ for mixed liqour.

  • An investigation of the annual change and C:N:P ratio in particulate organic matter (POM) in Chinhae Bay, a semi-enclosed bay of the southern coast of Korean Peninsula, was carried out for a period of 12 months between January and December, 1993. The concentrations of POM have a broad range: 198∼4,416 ugC/l, 24∼792 ugN/l and 4.5∼69.0 ugP/l, Marked seasonal changes of POM, particularly particulate organic carbon (POC) and nitrogen (PON), were observed in the surface water. Generally, the concentration of POM peaks in summer. The C:N:P composition ratio of particulate organic matter, which is high in summer, also shows a seasonal change. The C:N assimilation ratio is constant at 6.53, which is consistent with the Redfield ratio. The significant linear relationship between POM and chlorophyll-a in the surface water during the survey period (except for January and February) and the C:N ratio suggest that the concentration of POM is controlled by phytoplankton biomass. POM peaks in summer, a period characterized by high freshwater input and the strong stratification, as a result of the intense proliferation of phytoplankton by a large amount of nutrient loading from the tributaries. On the other hand, the high C:P and N:P ratios in summer indicate that P is limited for phytoplankton growth owing to N-enrichment from a high input of freshwater with a high dissolved inorganic N:P ratio.

  • PbTiO3 thin films were fabricated onto MgO(100) single crystal substrate by reactive D. C magnetron sput-tering of Pb and Ti metal in an oxygen and argon gas mixture. The annealing of the thin films resulted in the decrease of both the c-axis orientation ratio and the lattice parameter. It is well known that the c-axis lattice parameter of thin film is dependent on the Pb/(Pb+Ti)ratio and the residual stress in the film The PbTiO3 thin films with a Pb/(Pb+T) ratio ranging from 0.45 to 0.57 were fabricated and annealed. The structure of the film the c-axis orientation ratio and the lattice parameter were not dependent on the Pb/(Pb+Ti) ratio before and after annealing. These experimental results proved that the decrease of the c-axis lattice parameter under the annealing conditions was due to the relaxation of the intrinsic stress in the film. This relaxation of the intrinsic stress caused the decrease of the c-axis orientation ratio and this phenomenon can be explained by c-axis growth lattice model.

  • The objective of this study was to determine the roughage to concentrate (R:C) ratio with rain tree pod meal (RPM) supplementation on in vitro fermentation using gas production technique. The experiment design was a 6${\times}$4 factorial arrangement in a CRD. Factor A was 6 levels of R:C ratio (100:0, 80:20, 60:40, 40:60, 20:80 and 0:100) and factor B was 4 levels of RPM (0, 4, 8 and 12 mg). It was found that gas kinetic, extent rate (c) was linearly increased (p<0.01) with an increasing level of concentrate while cumulative gas production (96 h) was higher in R:C of 40:60. In addition, interaction of R:C ratio and RPM level affected $NH_3-N$ and IVDMD and were highest in R:C of 0:100 with 0, 4 mg of RPM and 40:60 with 8 mg of RPM, respectively. Moreover, interaction of R:C ratio and RPM level significantly increased total volatile fatty acids and propionate concentration whereas lower acetate, acetate to propionate ratios and $CH_4$ production in R:C of 20:80 with 8 mg of RPM. Moreover, the two factors, R:C ratio and RPM level influenced the protozoal population and the percentage of methanogens in the total bacteria population. In addition, the use of real-time PCR found that a high level of concentrate in the diet remarkably decreased three cellulolytic bacteria numbers (F. succinogenes, R. flavefaciens and R. albus). Based on this study, it is suggested that the ratio of R:C at 40:60 and RPM level at 12 mg could improve ruminal fluid fermentation in terms of reducing fermentation losses, thus improving VFA profiles and ruminal ecology.

  • Porous self-bonded silicon carbide (SiC) ceramics were fabricated at temperatures ranging from 1750 to $1850^{\circ}C$ using SiC, silicon (Si), and carbon (C) powders as starting materials. The effect of the Si:C ratio on porosity and strength was investigated as a function of sintering temperature. It was possible to produce self-bonded SiC ceramics with porosities ranging from 36% to 43%. The porous ceramics showed a maximal porosity when the Si:C ratio was 2:1 regardless of the sintering temperature. In contrast, the maximum strength was obtained when the ratio was 5:1.
