  • Characteristics of high molecular weight styrene-butadiene rubber(HM-SBR)/low molecular weight styrene-butadiene rubber(LM-SBR) mixtures were studied to investigate how to modify the processability and the mechanical properties of styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR). Mooney viscosity of the HM-SBR/LM-SBR mixtures and torque increase due to the vulcanization decreased by increasing the LM-SBR content of the mixtures. Shore A hardness and rebound properties were decreased by increasing the LM-SBR content of the mixtures. It was found that the value of tan ${\delta}$ of the mixtures in rubbery state was increased, while glass transition temperatures of the vulcanized blends were constant by increasing the LM-SBR content of the mixtures. It was postulated that the decrease of Mooney viscosity by increasing the LM-SBR content of the blends was due to plasticizing effects of the LM-SBR and the increased polydispersity of the mixtures. Change of mechanical properties of the vulcanized HM-SBR/LM-SBR mixtures was attributed to the decreased crosslink densities of the mixtures by increasing the LM-SBR content of the mixtures.

  • Morphological characteristics and formation of symmetric polystyrene-block-poly(1,4-butadiene) copolymer (PS-b-PBD) in thin films upon solvent-annealing were investigated by using atomic force microscopy (AFM). The thin films solvent-annealed in cyclohexane revealed the perforated lamellae of poly(1,4-butadiene) in the matrix of polystyrene while those solvent-annealed in n-hexane exhibited highly disordered patterns. Interestingly, when the thin films of PS-b-PBD were solvent-annealed with binary mixtures of cyclohexane and n-hexane, the morphological transition from the perforated lameallae to the perpendicularly-oriented lamellae of poly(1,4-butadiene) could be induced by changing the mixing ratio of both solvents. We also demonstrated that after microdomians of poly(1,4-butadiene) were successfully degraded by UV-$O_3$, linear poly(dimethyl siloxane) chains were back-filled into the etched regions of the thin film and then converted to silica nano-objects by oxygen plasma treatments.

  • The biodegradable hyaluronic acid membranes cross-linked with lactide using the crosslinking agent, 1,3-butadiene diepoxide (BD), were prepared as a potential biocompatible material for tissue engineering. The degree of lactide and BD reaction of the crosslinked membrane was determined by the analysis of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy 6% of growth inhibition was observed in case of high BD concentration but the value is low enough not to affect cell growth. As the crosslinking reaction temperature increased, elongation increased and swelling ratio decreased. The rate of degradation was found to increase with the crosslinking temperature. The drug release experiment showed that the transport of drug through the membrane decreased with the crosslinking temperature.

  • The morphological changes during melt compounding of ternary blends containing various combinations of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene(ABS), methyl methacrylate-butadiene-ethyl acrylate(MBE), styrene-acrylonitrile(SAM) copolymers, and poly(methyl methacrylate)(PMMA) as dispersed components in a fixed matrix of polycarbonate(PC) have been investigated. Depending on the composition of the blend, MBE particles and PMMA phase appear to locate at the PC-SAN interface under the influence of interfacial tensions and motion induced coalescence. The interfacial viscosity is found to be a critical factor that affects the amount of coalescence.

  • Creep characteristic is an important failure mechanism when evaluating engineering materials that are soft material as polymers or used as mechanical elements at high temperatures. One of the popular thermo-plastic polymers, Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) which is used broadly for machine elements material, as it has excellent mechanical properties such as impact resistance, toughness and stiffness compared to other polymers, was studied for creep characteristic at different levels of stress and temperatures. From the experimental results, the creep limit of ABS at room temperature is 80 % of tensile strength which is higher than PE and lower than PC or PMMA. Also the creep limits decreased to linearly as the temperatures increased, up to $80^{\circ}C$ which is the softening temperature of Butadiene ($82^{\circ}C$). Also the secondary stage of creep among the three creep stages for different levels of stress and temperature was non-existent which occurred for many metals by strain hardening effect.

  • When polybutadiene dissolved in toluene was a binder of carbon powder, the volatility of solvent just after electrode fabrication assured the mechanical solidity of the carbon paste electrode. This characteristic met the qualifications for practical use of carbon paste electrodes. A new enzyme electrode bound with butadiene rubber was constructed. In order to confirm whether it shows quantitative electrochemical behaviors or not, its electrochemical kinetic parameters, e.g. the symmetry factor, the exchange current density, the capacitance of double layer, the time constant, the maximum current, the Michaelis constant and other factors were investigated. These experimental facts showed that butadiene rubber is a recommendable binder for practical use of a carbon paste electrode.

  • In this work, styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) and styrene butadiene styrene (SBS) were used to modify asphalt, resulting in SBR- and SBS-modified asphalt, respectively. The two modified asphalts were emulsified with a nonionic emulsifier (Span 60) and cationic emulsifiers (ID, DDA) and their phase stabilization was investigated via particle size, Zeta potential, and flow behavior analysis. With increasing amount of the mixed emulsifier, the particle size decreased, leading to an increase in viscosity. The shear thinning behaviors and Zeta potential values ranging from 35-65 mV were determined and remained considerably stable. In addition, the adhesion strength and compression strength of the SBR-and SBS-modified asphalt emulsion were evaluated via surface free energy examination. The remarkable adhesion and compression strengths were estimated when 5 phr ID and 6 phr DDA were added to the emulsified asphalt modified with SBR and SBS. Therefore ID and DDA, the two cationic surfactants, played significant roles in improving the dispersion and interfacial adhesion strength, resulting in the improved adhesion and compression strength of the emulsified asphalts modified with SBR and SBS.

  • The effect of the silica content on the state and properties of silica-filled styrene-butadiene rubber/butadiene rubber (SBR/BR) compounds containing coupling and dispersion agents was evaluated by varying the content of silica from 50 to 120 phr. Bis-[(triethoxysilyl)propyl] tetrasulfide (TESPT) and zinc 2-ethylhexanoate (ZEH) were used as the coupling and dispersion agents, respectively. The maximum silica content in the pristine material was 80 phr, which increased to 120 phr upon the addition of TESPT and ZEH. The incorporation of TESPT considerably improved most of the rubber properties due to its coupling action and the suppression of silica flocculation, while further addition of ZEH resulted in additional improvements. The properties of the rubber compounds with different silica contents can be fully explained either by an enhancement of the rubber-silica interactions or by their deterioration due to an excessive amount of silica aggregates.

  • The conducting composites were prepared by emulsion polymerization with poly (acrylonitrile-co-butadiene) (NBR) as a matrix and polypyrrole (PPY) as a conducting polymer. Among several surfactants, the electrical conductivity of the composite which was polymerized by dodecyl sodium sulfate (DSS) was the best. The film of composite was prepared by compression molding. The electrical conductivity was measured by 4 probes method as a function of PPY and temperature. When the content of PPY was 25 wt%, the electrical conductivity of composite was increased up to 1.17 S/cm. The percolation threshold showed at the vicinity of 15 wt% PPY content.
