  • The activity and products distribution for the hydrogenation of butadiene and pentadiene over the gold and cobalt catalysts prepared by coprecipitation and impregnation method was investigated with using a flow reactor under atmospheric pressure. The reaction characteristics of the highly dispersed gold particles and its role were studied. The activity of the gold catalyst by coprecipitation was much higher than that by impregnation. The selectivity of butene on all gold particles was always 100% even in the absence of butadiene in the stream, but butadiene on cobalt supported catalyst was easily hydrogenated to butane. It was therefore considered that the active sites at circumferences of the gold particles possessed an unique property which took a proper affinity to hydrogen. In the hydrogenation of butadiene and pentadiene, the percentages of 1-butene and 2-pentene were 60%~70% and about 62%, respectively. The results could be simply explained by a statistical concepts of hydrogen addition.

  • For the purpose of development of the latex suitable for polymer cement mortar, experiments on the preparation of carboxylated styrene butadiene latex by the method of the two-step emulsion polymerization were performed. Methyl methacrylate, methacrylic acid and acrylic acid were selected as carboxylic co-monomer, styrene and butadiene as monomer, sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate and sodium salt of lauryl sulfonate as anionic emulsifiers, and nonylphenoxy poly (ethyleneoxy) ethanol (n=10, 20, 40) as latex stabilizer. Potassium persulfate and sodium bisulfite were also used as redox initiator, and sodium monohydrogen phosphate and potassium carbonate as electrolytes. The effects of categories and concentration of carboxylic co-monomer, molecular weight control agent, crosslinking agent, and styrene/butadiene monomer ratio on the characteristics of latex were investigated. Polymerization recipes for preparation of polymer cement mortar could be proposed. The prepared latexes were tested for the physical properties such as compressive and flexural strength when latexes were mixed with cement mortar. The results showed that the latex could be adapted to polymer cement mortar. Also, it was recognized that the compressive and flexural strength were exhibited 25.4% and 45.3% respectively higher improvement than the quality standards at 28 days curing time.

  • The alkenylation of o-xylene with 1,3-butadiene to make OTP(ortho-tolyl Pentene) was carried out over liquid phase NaK alloy, Na metal and the metallic sodium dispersed on the specific support such as NaX and $Al_2O_3$. Liquid phase NaK alloy showed the improved conversion and selectivity when they were pretreated by ultrasound to increase the dispersion. For the case of metallic sodium, the induction period for the formation of homogeneous metal sodium solution with high dispersion was needed before the reaction. In the case of metallic sodium dispersed on support, more than 80 % conversion could be obtained without induction period regardless of supports used. But 85 % of the metallic sodium was resolved into the reaction mixture after reaction for 7 hours. The amount of byproducts, oligomers, produced from OTP and 1,3-butadiene increased with the amount of 1,3-butadiene introduced and the selectivity to OTP was in inversely proportional to the conversion.

  • Hyaluronic acid-based beads were prepared in order to develop a biomedical material for augumentation. Hyaluronic acid was crosslinked by 1,3-butadiene diepoxide in a suspension state maintained by rapid mixing of soybeen oil and hyaluronic acid solution. The particle size, surface area and swelling ratio were measured to investigate the physical properties of the synthesized beads and the bead surface was examined by scanning electron microscopy. The beads were formed in the range of $5-12vol\%$ concentration of crosslinking agent, which showed monodisperse size distribution. Both BET surface area and swelling ratio decreased as the concentration of either hyaluronic acid or crosslinking agent increased, and crosslinking temperature decreased. Bead size could be effectively controlled by mixing speed without affecting other physical property.

  • In order to investigate the characteristics of resistance and conduction of vulcanized styrene butadiene rubber (SBR)/ carbon black (CB) composites, surface/ volume resistivity, point to point resistance, decay time, and electrical conduction experiments with four different kinds of non-conductive carbon black were measured. When about 50phr of carbon black were loaded in SBR, all resistivites suddenly decreased and critical region (Rc) was shown. Current densities of SBR/CB composites showed critical point (Pc) and increased with the electric fields. Electrical conduction mechanisms of SBR/CB composites could be considered as the ohmic conduction at low electric fields and the space charge limited conduction (SCLC) at high electric fields, respectively.

  • Highly aromatic (HA) oils are common processing aids used in tire tread compounds. However, they often bleed and evaporate from the vulcanizates during tire use. Thus, the mechanical and dynamical properties of the tire decrease. To overcome this problem, we investigated nonfunctionalized liquid butadiene rubber (LBR-305, Kuraray) and center-functionalized liquid butadiene rubber (C-LqBR), polymerized by anionic polymerization. In addition to the liquid butadiene rubbers, p-tert-octylphenol (P-Resin) and C5 hydrocarbon (H-Resin) tackifier resins, which can induce entanglement of rubber compounds, were researched as a processing aid to solve the bleeding problem. Liquid butadiene rubbers have significantly reduced extraction loss by crosslinking with the main rubber chain. They have also increased the abrasion resistance and showed similar or better mechanical and dynamical properties against HA oils. However, resin compounds did not show differences in extraction loss compared to HA oil compounds; instead, they showed increased wet traction.

  • Styrene-Butadiene diblock or styrene-butadiene-styrene triblock copolymers are industrially important materials for asphalt modification and adhesives. A kinetic modeling study on non-isothermal anionic styrene-butadiene diblock copolymerization system is presented. The model deals with the association/dissociation reaction of initiator and propagating ion pairs in its kinetic scheme. By comparing model calculation results with real plant data, it is possible to obtain useful ideas for more efficient plant operation. For example, the model clearly provides important relation between the reaction temperature profile and the conversion of monomers.

  • The effects of mechanical activation of carbon black on the processing and properties of butadiene nitrile rubber were studied. Mechanical activation of carbon black caused an improvement in the physical and mechanical properties of the butadiene-nitrile rubber, BNR-18AMN. The optimum activation time that would afford rubber with improved properties was established.

  • Photografting reaction onto styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) as a function of monomer concentration, irradiation time and carbon black content has been studied using ultraviolet (UV). Acrylamide and benzophenone are used as monomer and photoinitiator, respectively. FT-IR ATR and static contact angle analysis using distilled water are used to measure the graft ratio of acrylamide onto SBR surface. Graft ratio of acrylamide increases with acrylamide concentration and irradiation time and contact angle tends to decrease with increasing graft ratio. It is observed that graft ratio increases with carbon black content.
