  • Presently, optical burst switching (OBS) technology is under study as a promising solution for the backbone of the optical Internet in the near future because OBS eliminates the optical buffer problem at the switching node with the help of no optical/electro/optical conversion and guarantees class of service without any buffering. To implement the OBS network, there are a lot of challenging issues to be solved. The edge router, burst offset time management, and burst assembly mechanism are critical issues. In addition, the core router needs data burst and control header packet scheduling, a protection and restoration mechanism, and a contention resolution scheme. In this paper, we focus on the burst assembly mechanism. We present a novel data burst generation algorithm that uses hysteresis characteristics in the queueing model for the ingress edge node in optical burst switching networks. Simulation with Poisson and self-similar traffic models shows that this algorithm adaptively changes the data burst size according to the offered load and offers high average data burst utilization with a lower timer operation. It also reduces the possibility of a continuous blocking problem in the bandwidth reservation request, limits the maximum queueing delay, and minimizes the required burst size by lifting up data burst utilization for bursty input IP traffic.

  • Optical Burst Switched (OBS) networks usually employ one-way reservation by sending a burst control packet (BCP) with a specific offset time, before transmitting each data burst frame (BDF). Therefore, The quality of service may be degraded because contentions may lead to loss of BDFs. Especially, this phenomenon becomes more serious when burst size is longer. This necessitates an effective method of prevention to avoid burst collision in nodes. OBS networks can employ several methods to avoid such burst losses. One is that burst size is cut short to reduce burst loss probability during scheduling time. In this paper, we evaluate the burst generation and transmission using Sub-Carrier Multiplexting (SCM) in OBS networks. We propose an appropriate burst assembly architecture and transmission scheme based on SCM in OBS networks. The performance of SCM in OBS networks is examined in terms of number of Sub-Carriers per wavelength, burst loss probability, throughput, and total bandwidth of an optical fiber.

  • Tracing the study of the burst test of steam generator tube, few studies have been reported to effect of external pressure acting on secondary-side in service condition. In this study the burst tests of Inconel 690TT were conducted in order to evaluate burst strength characteristics under the effect of external pressure. We obtained the result that the burst strength of Inconel 690TT increased when external pressure increased while both total circumferential elongation and uniform burst elongation were not affected. Also, according to the increased of external pressure, the size of the burst opening became smaller and the tear was getting severe.

  • An Adaptive Usage Parameter Control(UPC) mechanism using a Variable Token Pool(VTP) which is kind of preventive traffic control in the Asynchronous Transfer Mode(ATM) networks is described. The VTP mechanism can monitor violations of the average bit rate and burst duration as well as peak bit rate for the ON-OFF type traffic. The VTP can vary the token pool size by monitoring burst duration and silence duration for a long term. It also improves the sensitivity against the violation of burst duration and average bit rate and enables to response for the violating traffic situation quickly. The variable token pool size is varied in step size by every burst duration and silence duration. Two important parameters for controlling token pool size are Down_size and Up_size. We compare the performance of LB and JW mechanism with the proposed VTP mechanism by computer simulations. We have known that the proposed method is more effective than the previous mechanisms. It is shown that the cell loss rate of the VTP quite depends on the value of Down_size and Up_size. The two parameters should be decided as a propr value according to traffic situations.

  • Light appears to be needed in the early and late function of the cyanophage of Synechococcus sp. and dark treatment during the first 2 hr of the replication cycle increased the virus yield to 200%. The burst size of the cyanophage multiplied in Synechococcus sp. in dark was 11% of that of control. The viral multiplication was reduced 2% in the presence of photosynthetic inhibitor, DCMU of $10^{-6}$ M, and nearly blocked in $10^{-4}$ M CCCP. These data suggested that the photosynthetic dependence of the cyanophage is greater than those of LPP-1 and AS-1, and smaller than SM-1.

  • In attempt to develop a drug delivery system using serum albumin microspheres, bovine serum albumin microspheres containing antitumar agent. Cytarabine, were prepared. The shape, surface characteristics, size distribution, behavior of in vivo distribution, drug release behavior, and degradation of albumin microsphers in animal liver issue homogenate and proteolytic enzyme were investigated. The shape of albumin microspheres was spherical and the surface was smooth and compact. The size distribution of the albumin microspheres was effected by dispertion forces during emulsification and albumin concentration. Distribution of albumin microspheres after imtravenous administration in rabbit was achieved immediately. In vitro, albumin microsphere matrix was so hard that it retained most of cytarabine except initial burst during the first 10 minutes, and the level of drug release during the initial burst was affected by heating temperature, drug/albumin microsphere matrix was so hard that it retained most of cytarabine except initial burst during the first 10 minutes, and the level of drug release during the initial burst was affected by heating temperature, drug/albumin concentration ratio and size distribution. After drug release test, the morphology of albumin microspheres was not changed. Albumin microsphere matrix was degraded by the animal liver issue homogenate and proteolytic enzyme. The degree of degradation was affected by heating temperature.

  • In this paper, an efficient power control based MF-TDMA resource allocation scheme is proposed for next generation military satellite communication systems. The proposed scheme has the flexibility is used to support heterogeneous terminals with differ in transmission capabilities. The method can be divided into two parts : burst size calculation and burst structure determination. At first, we estimate the link budget taken into account a dynamic satellite link state variation. Then, applicable ACM level and burst size is chosen. In burst structure determination phase, we reorganize the burst structure in time-frequency domain by controlling limited power, bandwidth, time resources. In particular, we compensate the power spectral density among different terminals to integrate them in same transponder, Furthermore, we increase the packing efficiency by controlling the ACM level of the burst in applicable power spectral density range. Simulation results show that the method increase the spectral efficiency and burst packing efficiency. In addition, slot allocation rejection ratio is successfully reduced.

  • Optical burst switching(OBS) is a new switching paradigm to supporting bursty traffic on the Internet efficiently. OBS separates burst level and control level. To handle data burst efficiently, the scheduling schemes in optical burst switching systems must keep track of future resource availability when assigning arriving data bursts to wavelength channels. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of three scheduling schemes which are called Horizon, Single-gap and Multiple-gap, as a basic study for the future research of Optical Internet. Thus, firstly, we analyze the trade-off between the performance and the processing overhead of each scheme. In addition, the performance of OBS system which uses Multiple-gap scheduling is evaluated in detail under various network size. We use simulation for performance evaluation in terms of burst loss rate(BLR), wavelength channel utilization and the number of management data.

  • Like the conventional digital storage systems, volume holographic memory can be deteriorated by burst errors due to its high-density storage characteristics. These burst errors are used byoptical defects such as scratches, dust particles, etc. and are two-dimensional in a data page. To deal with these errors, we introduce some concepts for describing them and propose efficient two- dimensional interleaving schemes. The schemes are two-dimensional lattices of an error-correction code word and have equilateral triangular and square structures. Using these structures, we can minimize the number of code words that are interleaved and improve the efficiency of the system. For large size burst errors, the efficient interleaving structure is an equilateral triangular lattice. However, for some small size burst errors, it is reduced to a square lattice.

  • The high temperature tetragonal phase of zirconia containing $1.40{\~}1.60\;mol\%$ of yttria can be fully retained at room temperature by rapid cooling. The metastable tetragonal phase transforms into the monoclinic phase athermally upon subzero cooling. The transformation exhibited an athermal burst transformation. The effects of yttria content and grain size on the athermal martensitic transformation were studied in detail. The burst temperature linearly decreased with increasing yttria content or decreasing grain size. To consider the distribution of martensite nuclei, the Weibull modulus of the athermal martensitic transformation was evaluated from the distribution of the burst transformation temperature. From the Weibull analysis, the distribution of embryos appears to be more homogeneous than that of the defects responsible for the fracture of similar material.
