For buried gas pipelines, cathodic protection system shall be installed to protect against corrosion. The surveys of pipe-to-soil potentials for the gas pipelines should be carried out at the test box more than once a year. In urban, the test box is usually located on the driveway, therefore, it is difficult to measure the potentials. That is, traffic control is needed when carrying out the measurements of the potentials on daytime, or measurements of pipe-to-soil potentials at the test box located on the driveway have to be carried out in the late night when the traffic is light. We have developed remote potential monitoring system using the solid reference electrode and the wireless communication technology for the purpose of removing above problems. We have installed the developed solid reference electrodes at a site and monitored the potentials by wireless communication. Measured potential values were transferred to the server in office and analyzed. We have found the pipe-to-soil potentials transferred to the web server make no difference to the potentials measured directly on the site.
The stray current interference problem could induce the corrosion of near-by structure and rail itself. Many efforts has been concentrated on the reduction of the interference. In this work the influences of separation distance, soil resistivity, pipe coating resistance, leak resistance of rail were studied using the numerical analysis methods. These analysis could be used to estimate the sensitivity of each variables in the study of the mitigation method and their numerical analysis.
Grinding, weld deposition, type A sleeve, type B sleeve, composite sleeve, hot tapping and clamp are used as the method to repair the buried pipelines in the United States, UK and Europe. In the event of defect to the pipeline, they have repaired the pipeline through the fitness-for-service assessments. In addition, they have guidelines for the possible repair methods to apply to each type of damage, which is occurred due to the 3rd party construction or corrosion. According to the KGS FS551, Safety Validation in Detail including ECDA(External Corrosion Direct Assessment) as one method of integrity management should be carried out for the old pipeline which supply natural gas as the middle pressure in Korea. Where a defect on the pipelines is found, on the result of Safety Validation in Detail, the pipelines should be repaired or replaced by new piping. However, there are no guidelines or regulations regarding the repair and reinforcement of pipeline, so that, cutting the damaged pipeline and replacing it as a segment of new pipe is the only way in Korea until now. We have suggested pipeline repair methods including type A, B sleeve, composite sleeve, after the survey of foreign repair method and standards including the method of United States and the United Kingdom, and after analysis of the results on pipeline repair test including type A, type B sleeve and composite sleeve.
Response of the pipeline crossing fault is considered as the large strain problem. Proper estimation of the pipeline response plays important role in mitigation studies. In this study, an advanced continuum modeling including material non-linearity in large strain deformations, hardening/softening soil behavior and soil-pipeline interaction is applied. Through the application of a fully nonlinear analysis based on an explicit finite difference method, the mechanics of the pipeline behavior and its interaction with soil under large strains is presented in more detail. To make the results useful in oil and gas engineering works, a continuous pipeline of two steel grades buried in two clayey soil types with four different crossing angles of 30°, 45°, 70° and 90° with respect to the pipeline axis have been considered. The results are presented as the fault movement corresponding to different damage limit states. It was seen that the maximum affected pipeline length is about 20 meters for the studied conditions. Also, the affected length around the fault cutting plane is asymmetric with about 35% and 65% at the fault moving and stationary block, respectively. Local buckling is the dominant damage state for greater crossing angle of 90° with the fault displacement varying from 0.4 m to 0.55 m. While the tensile strain limit is the main damage state at the crossing angles of 70° and 45°, the cross-sectional flattening limit becomes the main damage state at the smaller 30° crossing angles. Compared to the stiff clayey soil, the fault movement resulting 3% tensile strain limit reach up to 40% in soft clayey soil. Also, it was seen that the effect of the pipeline internal pressure reaches up to about 40% compared to non-pressurized condition for some cases.
This paper has analyzed the structure, applicable regulations and the resistance characteristics of insulation ring type of CSST (Corrugated Stainless Steel Tubing for Gas). With the flammability test conducted in accordance with KS C IEC 60811-1-1, the evaluation of insulation resistance, temperature characteristics, and reliability has been conducted. An insulation ring type CSST consists of protective coating, tube, nut, insulation ring, packing, socket, and ball valve. Connecting an insulation ring type CSST to gas tubings for gas appliance is not permitted, moreover, the product shall be installed inside a sleeve pipe in case of buried installation such as the ceiling. Damages on protective coating and tube were detected when fire was applied to the test sample with a portable torch for 60 seconds. The insulation resistance of a normal product was $49.59M{\Omega}$, while that of the product completed the flammability test reduced to $9.21M{\Omega}$. The mean insulation resistance within the confidence Interval of 95% using the mini tap program 17 was $49.59M{\Omega}$ and the mean insulation resistance within the confidence interval reduced to $9.21M{\Omega}$. In the normal distribution analysis of 95% confidence interval, the value-P of the normal product was stable at 0.075 and AD(Anderson-Darling) statistic value was turned out to be 0.063, which is very normal, and the standard deviation was analyzed as 0.2586. The value P of the product completed the flammability test resulted in 0.005, the AD was 1.355 and the standard deviation reduced to 0.07908.
The sharing of common corridors by electric power transmission lines and pipelines is becoming more common place. However, such corridor sharing can result in undesired coupling of electromagnetic energy from the power lines to the near facilities. This causes induced voltages on underground metallic pipelines due to the power line currents. This could cause AC corrosion in the pipeline, which could in turn lead to disastrous accidents, such as gas explosion or oil leakage. This paper investigates for the limitation of induced voltage on the buried metal structures which is used in the inside and outside of the country. And then we measure the earth resistance and leakage current of 22.9kV distribution lines and pipe to soil potential of near pipelines in Seoul Korea. Hereby we can see the leakage current flowing through the earthing electrode have an effect on near pipelines.

The advancement of electronics and telecommunication technologies has forced the risk management system for underground metallic structures to evolve into the remote monitoring and control system. Especially, facilities such as gas pipelines, oil pipelines and water distribution lines might make hazardous effect on human safety without continuous monitoring and control. As a result, pipeline engineers have applied cathodic protection system to prevent the degradation of their facilities by corrosion and carried out a periodic monitoring of the pipe-to-soil (P/S) potentials at numberous test boxes along their pipelines. The latter action on a road in downtowns, however, is so much dangerous that the inspectors should be ready to suffer the threatening of their lives and maintenance. In order to minimize these social costs and hazards, a stand-alone type corrosion monitoring equipment which can be installed in test box, store the P/S data for given Belied and send the data by wired/wireless telecommunications is under development. In order to obtain the exact P/S data, however, a reference electrode should be located as close to the pipeline as possible. Actually, the measured potential by a conventional portable reference electrode contain inevitably an IR drop portion caused by the current flow from the cathodic protection rectifier or the subway railroad. To minimize this error, it is recommended that the reference electrode should be buried within 10 cm from the pipeline. In this paper, we describe the design parameters for fabricating the permanent type reference electrode and the characteristics of the developed reference electrode.

In this study, quantitative risk assessment was carried out for city gas high-pressure pipelines crossing through urban rivers. The risk assessment was performed based on actual city gas properties, traffic volume and population and weather data in the worst case scenario conditions. The results confirmed that the social and individual risks were located in conditionally acceptable areas. This can be judged to be safer considering that the risk mitigation effect of protecting the pipes or installing them in the protective structure at the time of the construction of the river buried pipe is not reflected in the result of the risk assessment. Also, SAFETI v8.22 was used to analyze the effects of wind speed and pasquil stability on the accident damage and dispersion distances caused by radiation. As a result of the risk assessment, the safety of the pipelines has been secured to date, but suggests ways to improve safety by preventing unexpected accidents including river bed changes through periodic inspections and monitoring.

There are a variety of structures below the surface are buried. In particular, if It is experiencing problems in the city gas pipe or electrical wire, our safety would be greatly jeopardized. Therefore, the underground structures which encounter a variety of pollutants are highly sensitive to corrosion. So if you are not identify the degree of corrosion, it can lead to large accidents such as gas leakage. Until now, person visit directly every underground structure to measure and record manually, but This approach requires a lot of human and material resources and the continuity of management. Therefore, the research to find out the risk factors quickly via the continuous management is needed, and in this paper the structures management systems in the vehicle being moved by combining ICT underground structures for state information wirelessly collects and analyzes system is proposed.
According to the urban gas business law, electrical corrosion prevention measures shall be installed to the buried gas pipelines and the pipe-to-soil potentials should be measured at the test box at least once a year. Most of the test boxes installed in urban area are usually located on the road where the vehicle travels, therefore, it is difficult to measure the CP potentials at the test boxes. That is, we need traffic control when carrying out the measurement of the CP potentials on daytime when the traffic is heavy, or we have to measure the potentials in the late night when the traffic is light. To solve these difficulties, we have studied remotely CP potential measuring method by using the patrol car. We have installed solid reference electrodes and data loggers under the test boxes on the site and received the CP potentials from the data loggers when the vehicle moves. It was difficult to send and receive the data because the data logger was located under the ground. We have applied 3 different method including 2 antenna systems to achieve best effective way in receiving the data. We have found the remote CP measuring method by using a car can save more 20 times of measuring time than conventional measuring methods.
