Finite Element Analysis of Densification Behavior during Equal Channel Angular Pressing Process of Powders (분말 ECAP 공정 시 치밀화의 유한요소해석)

  • Nanostructured metallic materials are synthesized by bottom-up processing which starts with powders for assembling bulk materials or top-down processing starting with a bulk solid. A representative bottom-up and top-down paths for bulk nanostructured/ultrafine grained metallic materials are powder consolidation and severe plastic deformation (SPD) methods, respectively. In this study, the bottom-up powder and top-down SPD approaches were combined in order to achieve both full density and grain refinement without grain growth, which were considered as a bottle neck of the bottom-up method using conventional powder metallurgy of compaction and sintering. For the powder consolidation, equal channel angular pressing (ECAP), one of the most promising method in SPD, was used. The ECAP processing associated with stress developments was investigated. ECAP for powder consolidation were numerically analyzed using the finite element method (FEM) in conjunction with pressure and shear stress.

Dynamic Model Based Ratio Calculation of Equivalent Reactance and Resistance of the Bulk Power Systems (동적모델을 이용한 대규모 전력계통의 등가 리액턴스와 저항 비율(X/R) 계산)

  • This paper proposes the method for more effectively calculating X/R which is the ratio of equivalent reactance(X) and resistance(R) of the bulk power system and analyses the characteristic of X/R values by applying the proposed method to the real bulk power systems. X/R is used to determine the rating of the relay in the bulk power systems and its value has been accepted to be big enough to ignore the equivalent resistance of the bulk power systems. However, X/R is calculated as a big number when only the upper transformer and transmission line are considered. The correct approach to calculating X/R needs to consider all the parameters including generators, transformers, lines and loads. This paper calculates X/R of the bulk power systems using dynamic models which have been used to analyse the power system stability. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by applying it to the test system and X/R values of the real bulk power systems are analyzed. In addition, the dependence of X/R on the closeness of its calculating locations to the generator is verified by using the marginal loss factor which has been used in the electricity market.

  • The 181,000 DWT Bulk Carrier has a different deck house type, which is not typical for previous bulk carriers, to meet the new international rules for bulk carriers. This new deck house has much smaller transverse breadth than the hull's transverse breath, resulting in large levels of the transverse response of the deck house. In addition, the longitudinal response of the funnel showed rather a large magnitude of vibration, which are excited by the ship's main excitations such as the main engine H-moment and the propeller surface forte when the ship operates at the NCR and the MCR speeds In the ballast condition. To solve these issues, the global forced vibration analysis has been performed for the ship and the ship structure has been modified to reduce the vibration level by increasing the girder depth and adjusting the engine room tank arrangement.

An Analytical Model for Deriving The Threshold Voltage of a Short-channel Bulk-type MOSFET (Short-Channel Bulk-Type MOSFET의 문턱전압 도출을 위한 해석적 모델)

  • In this paper, a new analytical model for deriving the threshold voltage of a short-channel bulk-type MOSFET is suggested. Using the Fourier coefficient method, the Laplace equation in the oxide region and the Poisson equation in the depleted silicon region have been solved two-dimensionally. Making use of them, the minimum surface potential is derived to describe the threshold voltage. Simulation results show good agreement with the dependencies of the threshold voltage on the various device parameters and applied bias voltages.

Fabrication of a large grain YBCO bulk superconductor by homo-seeding melt growth method

  • To fabricate large grain YBCO bulk superconductors by melt process, Sm123 single crystal with a high melting point are mostly used as seeds. However, it also uses Y123 film deposited on MgO single crystal substrate. This study investigated the growth behavior of the Y123 grain during a melt process when single grain YBCO bulk was used as a seed. Single grain Y123 bulk was grown when the seed size was small. When the seed size was relatively large, multiple grains were grown but the grains were still large. Y123 seed crystal was completely decomposed during high temperature anneal at 1040℃ and new Y123 crystals were nucleated during a slow cooling stage below a peritectic temperature. Thereafter, newly formed Y123 crystals from the seed area are thought to grow into the Y1.8 powder compact. The crystallographic orientations of newly nucleated Y123 grains are independent of the crystallographic orientation of Y123 seed. It is thought that the crystallographic orientation of newly nucleated Y123 crystal can be controlled by using Y211-free Y123 single crystal as a seed of homo-seeding melt growth.

  • We examine berth allocation problems in tidal bulk ports with an objective of minimizing the demurrage and dispatch associated berthing cost. In the proposed optimization model inventory (or stock) level constraints are considered so as to satisfy the service level requirements in bulk terminals. It is shown that the mathematical programming formulation of this research provides improved schedule resolution and solution accuracy. We also show that the conventional big-M method of standard resource allocation models can be exempted in tidal bulk ports, and thus the computational efficiency can be significantly improved.

  • In many scientific and commercial applications such as Earth Observation System (EOSDIS) and mobile Phone services tracking a large number of clients, it is a daunting task to archive and index ever increasing volume of complex data that are continuously added to databases. To efficiently manage multidimensional data in scientific and data warehousing environments, R-tree based index structures have been widely used. In this paper, we propose a scalable technique called seeded clustering that allows us to maintain R-tree indexes by bulk insertion while keeping pace with high data arrival rates. Our approach uses a seed tree, which is copied from the top k levels of a target R-tree, to classify input data objects into clusters. We then build an R-tree for each of the clusters and insert the input R-trees into the target R-tree in bulk one at a time. We present detailed algorithms for the seeded clustering and bulk insertion as well as the results from our extensive experimental study. The experimental results show that the bulk insertion by seeded clustering outperforms the previously known methods in terms of insertion cost and the quality of target R-trees measured by their query performance.

The polymerization efficiency of a bulk-fill composite based on matrix-modification technology

  • Objectives: To evaluate the polymerization efficiency of a matrix-modified bulk-fill composite, and compare it to a conventional composite which has a similar filler system. The degree of conversion (DC%) and monomer elution were measured over different storage periods. Additionally, fillers' content was examined. Materials and Methods: Cylindrical specimens were prepared, in bulk and incrementally, from Filtek Bulk Fill (B) and Filtek Supreme XTE (S) composites using a Teflon mold, for each test (n = 6). Using attenuated total reflection method of Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy, DC% was measured after 24 hours, 7 days, and 30 days. Using high-performance liquid chromatography, elution of hydroxyethyl methacrylate, triethylene glycol dimethacrylate, urethane dimethacrylate, and bisphenol-A glycidyl dimethacrylate was measured after 24 hours, 7 days and 30 days. Filler content was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Data were analyzed using 2-way mixed-model analysis of variance (α = 0.05). Results: There was no significant difference in DC% over different storage periods between B-bulk and S-incremental. Higher monomer elution was detected significantly from S than B. The elution quantity and rate varied significantly over storage periods and between different monomers. SEM images showed differences in fillers' sizes and agglomeration between both materials. Conclusions: Matrix-modified bulk-fill composites could be packed and cured in bulk with polymerization efficiency similar to conventional composites.

Fast Hilbert R-tree Bulk-loading Scheme using GPGPU (GPGPU를 이용한 Hilbert R-tree 벌크로딩 고속화 기법)

  • In spatial databases, R-tree is one of the most widely used indexing structures and many variants have been proposed for its performance improvement. Among these variants, Hilbert R-tree is a representative method using Hilbert curve to process large amounts of data without high cost split techniques to construct the R-tree. This Hilbert R-tree, however, is hardly applicable to large-scale applications in practice mainly due to high pre-processing costs and slow bulk-load time. To overcome the limitations of Hilbert R-tree, we propose a novel approach for parallelizing Hilbert mapping and thus accelerating bulk-loading of Hilbert R-tree on GPU memory. Hilbert R-tree based on GPU improves bulk-loading performance by applying the inversed-cell method and exploiting parallelism for packing the R-tree structure. Our experimental results show that the proposed scheme is up to 45 times faster compared to the traditional CPU-based bulk-loading schemes.

Optimal dimension design of a hatch cover for lightening a bulk carrier

  • According to the increase of the operating cost and material cost of a ship due to the change of international oil price, a demand for the lightening of the ship weight is being made from various parties such as shipping companies, ship owners, and shipyards. To satisfy such demand, many studies for a light ship are being made. As one of them, an optimal design method of an existing hull structure, that is, a method for lightening the ship weight based on the optimization technique was proposed in this study. For this, we selected a hatch cover of a bulk carrier as an optimization target and formulated an optimization problem in order to determine optimal principal dimensions of the hatch cover for lightening the bulk carrier. Some dimensions representing the shape of the hatch cover were selected as design variables and some design considerations related to the maximum stress, maximum deflection, and geometry of the hatch cover were selected as constraints. In addition, the minimization of the weight of the hatch cover was selected as an objective function. To solve this optimization problem, we developed an optimization program based on the Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP) using C++ programming language. To evaluate the applicability of the developed program, it was applied to a problem for finding optimal principal dimensions of the hatch cover of a deadweight 180,000 ton bulk carrier. The result shows that the developed program can decrease the hatch cover's weight by about 8.5%. Thus, this study will be able to contribute to make energy saving and environment-friendly ship in shipyard.
