Spatial mapping of screened electrostatic potential and superconductivity by scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy

  • By using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/S), we can make images of various physical properties in nanometer-scale spatial resolutions. Here, I demonstrate imaging of two electron-correlated subjects; screening and superconductivity by STM/S. The electrostatic potential around a charge is described with the Coulomb potential. When the charge is located in a metal, the potential is modified because of the free electrons in the host. The potential modification, called screening, is one of the fundamental phenomena in the condensed matter physics. Using low-temperature STM we have developed a method to measure electrostatic potential in high spatial and energy resolutions, and observed the potential around external charges screened by two-dimensional surface electronic states. Characteristic potential decay and the Friedel oscillation were clearly observed around the charges [1]. Superconductivity of nano-size materials, whose dimensions are comparable with the coherence length, is quite different from their bulk. We investigated superconductivity of ultra-thin Pb islands by directly measuring the superconducting gaps using STM. The obtained tunneling spectra exhibit a variation of zero bias conductance (ZBC) with a magnetic field, and spatial mappings of ZBC revealed the vortex formation [2]. Size dependence of the vortex formation will be discussed at the presentation.

  • In this paper, the data retention characteristics were analyzed to find out the thickness effect on the trap energy distribution of silicon nitride in the silicon-oxide-nitride-oxide-silicon (SONOS) flash memory devices. The nitride films were prepared by low pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD). The flat band voltage shift in the programmed device was measured at the elevated temperatures to observe the thermal excitation of electrons from the nitride traps in the retention mode. The trap energy distribution was extracted using the charge decay rates and the experimental results show that the portion of the shallow interface trap in the total nitride trap amount including interface and bulk trap increases as the nitride thickness decreases.

사질토양에서의 Benzene의 이동성에 관한 연구 (Transport and Fate of Benzene in a Sandy Soil)

  • 토립자 표면에서의 흡착에 의한 토양에서의 탄화수소계 화합물의 지연효과는 잘 알려진 현상이다. 본 연구에서는 배치시험과 주상시험을 수행함으로써 사질토양에서 Benzene의 이동성에 대한 지연효과를 조사하였다. 배치시험을 위하여 토양시료와 다양한 초기농도의 Benzene 용액을 48시간 반응시켰고. 초기용액과 평행상태의 Benzene 용액의 농도를 HPLC를 이용하여 분석하였다. 주상시험은 파괴곡선으로 알려진 시간에 따른 용액의 농도를 측정함으로써 수행되었다. 추적자로는 10 g/L 농도의 KCI과 0.88 g/L의 Benzene 용액을 사용하였고 .각각의 용액을 토양시료의 상부경계면에 순간주입한 후 정상류 상태에서 배출구로 빠져나온 용탈수의 농도를 EC-meter와 HPLC를 이용하여 측정하였다. 배치시험의 결과로부터 linear adsorption isotherm에 의한 분배계수가 측정되었고 주상시험 조건의 용적밀도 및 함수율을 고려한 지연계수가 산정되었다. 주상시험의 결과 i) Benzene의 첨두농도는 KCl 첨두농도보다 상당히 낮았으나. ⅱ) 첨도농도의 도달시간은 거의 일치하였다. 첨두농도의 도달시간이 일치한다는 결과는 지연효과가 일어나지 않았다는 것을 지시하며, 배치시험의 결과로부터 산정된 지연계수를 고려하여 예측된 파과곡선은 Benzene의 주상시험 결과와 일치하지 않았다. Benzene 농도의 뚜렷한 감소를 설명할 수 있는 유일한 방법은 convection-dispersion equation(CDE) 모델에서 비가역 흡착에 의한 농도의 절대적 감소를 고려하는 감쇄계수(decay or sink coefficient)를 적용해야 하는 것으로 판단된다.

사질토양에서의 중금속의 지연효과와 이동성 (Retardation Effect and Mobility of a Heavy Metal in a Sandy Soil)

  • 토립자 표면에서의 흡착에 의한 토양에서의 중금속의 지연효과는 잘 알려진 현상이다. 본 연구에서는 배치시험과 주상시험을 수행함으로써 사질 토양에서 Zn의 이동성에 대한 지연효과를 조사하였다. 주상시험은 파과곡선(BTC)으로 알려진 시간에 따른 용액의 농도를 측정함으로써 수행되었다. 추적자로는 10 g/L 농도의 NaCl과 ZnCl$_2$를 사용하였고, 각각의 용액을 토양시료의 상부경계에 순간주입한 후 정상류 상태에서 배출구로 빠져나온 용탈수의 농도를 EC-meter와 ICP-AES를 이용하여 측정하였다. 배치시험은 표준절차에 근거하여 이루어졌으며, 토양시료로부터 선별된 미세입자들을 다양한 초기농도의 ZnCl$_2$용액과 반응시켜 평형상태의 Zn 이온의 농도를 ICP를 이용하여 분석하였다. 주상시험의 결과는 i) ICP-AES에 의해 분석된 ZnCl$_2$의 첨두농도는 NaCl이나 총전기전도도로부터 구한 값보다 상당히 낮았고, ii) 두 종류의 추적자 모두 첨두농도의 도달시간은 상당히 일치하였다. 상대적으로 낮은 Zn의 농도는 Zn과 다른 양이온들간의 이온교환반응이 일어났고, 용탈수의 pH가 높은 값의 범위(7.0~7.9)에 있는 것으로 보아 Zn(OH)$_2$의 형태로 침전되었을 가능성이 있다는 것으로 설명될 수 있다. 첨두농도의 도달시간이 일치한다는 결과는 토양시료에서 지연효과가 일어나지 않았다는 것을 지시한다. Zn 이온의 뚜렷한 감소를 설명할 수 있는 유일한 방법은 CDE 모델에 용액상태에서 Zn 이온의 절대적 감소를 고려하는 감쇄계수(decay or sink coefficient)를 적용하는 것이었다.

고해상도 방사선 영상을 위한 $Gd_2O_3:Eu^{3+}$ 나노 형광체 제조 및 광학적 특성 (Fabrication of $Gd_2O_3:Eu^{3+}$ Nano Phosphor and Optical Characteristics for High Resolution Radiation Imaging)

  • In this paper, we have synthesized $Gd_2O_3:Eu^{3+}$ nano phosphor particle using a low temperature solution-combustion method. We have investigated the structure and the luminescent characteristic as the sintering temperature and europium concentration. From XRD(X-ray diffraction) and SEM(scanning electron microscope) results, we have verified that the phosphor particle was fabricated a spherical shape with $30{\sim}40nm$ particle size. From the photoluminescence results, the strong peak exhibits at 611 um and the luminescent intensity depends on europium concentration. $Gd_2O_3:Eu$ fine phosphor particle has shown excellent luminescent efficiency at 5 wt% of europium concentration. The phosphors calcinated at $500^{\circ}C$ have possessed the x-ray peaks corresponding to the cubic phase of $Gd_2O_3$. As calcinations temperature increased to $700^{\circ}C$, the new monoclinic phase has identified except cubic patterns. From the luminescent decay time measurements, mean lifetimes were $2.3{\sim}2.6ms$ relatively higher than conventional bulk phosphors. These results indicate that $Gd_2O_3:Eu$ nano phosphor is possible for the operation at the low x-ray dose, therefore, the application as medical imaging detector.

새로 개발한 조월견방부제 ″쉬세요(Swi-Se-Yo)″의 효과에 관하여 (Study on the Effect of a New Antiseptic Preparation ″Swi-Se-Yo″ on the Carry-Over Cocoons in Silk Reeling Process)

  • In silk reeling process the carry-over cocoons must be submerged in the reeling baths filled with reeling water and left until reopening the operation. Under the detention the carry-over cocoons are apt to decay without any antiseptic treatment. Thus an useful antiseptic for the cocoons is urgently needed, and various antseptic agents have been tested for their applicability to the process. However, such an useful agent has not been developed yet. Formalin has been the only chemical used for antisepticizing carry-over cocoons, although it has many defects as the antiseptic for the cocoons. In these circumstances, recently we newly prepared an antiseptic useful for preventing the carryover cocoons from decaying. We named the new antiseptic preparation "Swi-Se-Yo." The Korean term "Swi-Se-Yo" literally means "please take a rest". Through a series of experiments with Swi-Se-Yo we obtained the following results: 1) Swi-Se-Yo, in 0.05% aqueous solution, exerted a good antiseptic effect on the boiled Cocoons submerged in the reeling baths and the effect lasted for 45 hours. The duration of the effect is about two times longer than that of Formalin. 2) The percentage of cocoon reel ability of the carry-over cocoons treated with Swi-Se-Yo was 6% higher than that of Formalin and was equal to that of flowing cold water. 3) The percentage of raw silk yield of the carry-over cocoons treated with Swi-Se-Yo was almost equal to that of Formalin and to that of flowing cold water. 4) The quality of raw silk of the carry-over cocoons treated with Swi-Se-Yo is the same as that of flowing cold water. Besides the above favourable results, Swi-Se-Yo has many advantages as an antiseptic. Chemically it is very stable. Its antimicrobial action is very strong and the spectrum is very broad. It can be available in water-soluble powder and in small bulk. And it is not harmful to human and domestic animals. Considering these profitable properties of Swi-Se-Yo, it will have a good reputation as a carry-over cocoon antiseptic. (The chemical composition and manufacturing method of Swi-Se-Yo will be published in the near future.)

First-principles Study of Graphene/Hexagonal Boron Nitride Stacked Layer with Intercalated Atoms

  • We have studied the atomic and electronic structure of graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) on a hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) sheet with intercalated atoms using first-principles calculations. The h-BN sheet is an insulator with the band gap about 6 eV and then it may a good candidate as a supporting dielectric substrate for graphene-based nanodevices. Especially, the h-BN sheet has the similar bond structure as graphene with a slightly longer lattice constant. For the computation, we use the Vienna ab initio simulation package (VASP). The generalized gradient approximation (GGA) in the form of the PBE-type parameterization is employed. The ions are described via the projector augmented wave potentials, and the cutoff energy for the plane-wave basis is set to 400 eV. To include weak van der Waals (vdW) interactions, we adopt the Grimme's DFT-D2 vdW correction based on a semi-empirical GGA-type theory. Our calculations reveal that the localized states appear at the zigzag edge of the GNR on the h-BN sheet due to the flat band of the zigzag edge at the Fermi level and the localized states rapidly decay into the bulk. The open-edged graphene with a large corrugation allows some space between graphene and h-BN sheet. Therefore, atoms or molecules can be intercalated between them. We have considered various types of atoms for intercalation. The atoms are initially placed at the edge of the GNR or inserted in between GNR and h-BN sheet to find the effect of intercalated atoms on the atomic and electronic structure of graphene. We find that the impurity atoms at the edge of GNR are more stable than in between GNR and h-BN sheet for all cases considered. The nickel atom has the lowest energy difference of ~0.2 eV, which means that it is relatively easy to intercalate the Ni atom in this structure. Finally, the magnetic properties of intercalated atoms between GNR and h-BN sheet are investigated.

Characteristics of $In_xGa_{1-x}N/GaN$ single quantum well grown by MBE

  • Structural and optical properties of $In_xGa_{1-X}N$ as well as $In_{0.1}Ga_{0.9}N$/GaN single quantum we11 (SQW) grown on sapphire (0001) substrate with an based GaN using rf-plasma assisted MBE have been investigated. The quality of the InXGal.,N fdm was improved as the growth temperature increased. In PL measurements at low temperatures, the band edge emission peaks of $In_xGa_{1-X}N$ was shifted to red region as an indium cell and substrate temperature increased. For $In_{0.1}Ga_{0.9}N$/GaN SQW, the optical emission energy has blue shift about 15meV in PL peak, due to the confined energy level in the well region. And, the FWHM of the $In_{0.1}Ga_{0.9}N$/GaN SQW was larger than that of the bulk Ino,la.9N films. The broadening of FWHM can be explained either as non-uniformity of Indium composition or the potential fluctuation in the well region. Photoconductivity (PC) decay measurement reveals that the optical transition lifetimes of the SQW measured gradually increased with temperatures.

Long-Term Shelf Lifetime of Polymer:Nonfullerene Solar Cells Stored under Dark and Indoor Light Environment

  • Here we report the long-term stability of polymer:nonfullerene solar cells which were stored under dark and indoor light condition. The polymer:nonfullerene solar cells were fabricated using bulk heterojunction (BHJ) layers of poly[(2,6-(4,8-bis(5-(2-ethylhexyl) thiophen-2-yl)-benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene))-alt-(5,5-(1',3'-di-2-thienyl-5',7-bis(2-ethylhexyl)benzo[1',2'-c:4',5'-c']dithiophene-4,8-dione))] (PBDB-T) and 3,9-bis(6-methyl-2-methylene-(3-(1,1-dicyanomethylene)-indanone))-5,5,11,11-tetrakis(4-hexylphenyl)-dithieno[2,3-d:2',3-d']-s-indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b']dithiophene (IT-M). To investigate their long-term stability, the PBDB-T:IT-M solar cells were stored in an argon-filled glove box. One set of the fabricated solar cells was completely covered with an aluminum foil to prevent any effect of light, whereas another set was exposed to indoor light. The solar cells were subjected to a regular performance measurement for 40 weeks. Results revealed that the PBDB-T:IT-M solar cells underwent a gradual decay in performance irrespective of the storage condition. However, the PBDB-T:IT-M solar cells stored under indoor light condition exhibited relatively lower power conversion efficiency (PCE) than those stored under the dark. The inferior stability of the solar cells under indoor light was explained by the noticeably changed optical absorption spectra and dark spot generation, indicative of degradations in the BHJ layers.

  • KPSS 검정법과 ADF 검정법을 이용하여 시계열 변수에 대한 단위근 존재유무 검정을 실시한 결과 모든 수준변수는 불안정적이며, 차분변수는 안정적인 것으로 나타났다. 다음으로 EG 공적분 검정과 Johansen 공적분 검정 결과 3개 운임의 검정통계량 모두 공적분 관계가 성립하는 것으로 나타났다. 공적분 검정 결과 모형의 허구적 회귀 가능성이 배제되고, 공적분 벡터가 존재하는 것으로 나타남에 따라 공적분 벡터 추정식과 오차수정모형을 도출하였다. 그 결과 환율의 상승은 운임의 하락을, 주가의 상승은 운임의 상승 초래하는 것으로 나타났다. 운임에 미치는 영향은 환율보다 주가가 더 큰 것으로 분석되었다. 또한 오차항의 계수가 통계적으로 유의하였으며 BDI와 BPI는 매월 11%의 속도로, BCI는 매월 12%의 속도로 장기균형으로 수렴되고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 이어 더불어 충격반응분석 결과 모두 운임은 환율과 주가 충격에 각각 하락과 상승 반응을 보여주었다. 모든 운임은 1개월에 가장 큰 반응을 보였으며, BCI가 환율과 주가 충격에 대해 가장 큰 반응을 보였으며, 지속기간으로는 BDI가 가장 장기적이었다. 또한 GARCH 모형을 통해 도출한 다우존스지수 변동성이 운임에 미치는 영향을 살펴본 결과 주가 변동성 충격에 대한 BPI, BCI, BDI의 반응의 크기가 각각 1개월에서 -0.0227, -0.0210, -0.0183로 나타났다. 또한 수입변동성 충격에 대한 BCI와 BDI의 반응의 크기가 각각 1개월에서 -0.0103과 -0.0001로, BPI의 반응의 크기가 2개월에서 -0.0027로 나타났다. 그리고 누적충격반응 분석 결과 환율이 1달러에 3엔 상승하는 충격과 주가가 400포인트 상승하는 충격에 대해 BCI가 가장 큰 폭으로 반응을 보이는 것으로 분석되었다.
