In the construction industry, many of the inspection activities have been conducted by experts' eyes. The inspection performance of this kind of method is highly influenced by experience and knowledge of the expert. The experts who have fluent experience may show better inspection performance than the novice. The problem is the deficiency of experts in the near future due to the acceleration of retirement of the aging expert. Eye-tracking technology can be a solution to effectively educate the novice through transferring the knowledge of an expert and to advance the inspection activities using experts' eyes. This study, as an initial step to suggest the solution, (1) figured out the state of the art of eye-tracking technology, (2) reviewed the previous research to improve the inspection in construction using experts' eye, (3) explored the potential of the application area of eye-tracking technology, and (4) established the framework to develop the advanced inspection method in two application area which are construction site safety management and infrastructure performance measurement.

Reinforcement steel fixing is a skilled and manually intensive construction trade. Current practice for the quality assessment of reinforcement steel fixing is normally performed by fabricators and has high potential in having errors due to the tedious nature of the work. In order to overcome the current inspection limitation, this study presents an approach that provides visual assistance and inspection enhancement for inspectors to assess the dimensional layout of reinforcement steel fixing. To this end, this study aims to establish an end-to-end framework for rebar layout quality inspection using laser scanning and Augmented Reality (AR). The proposed framework is composed of three parts: (1) the laser-scanned rebar data processing; (2) the rebar inspection procedure integrating with AR; and (3) the checking and fixing the rebar layout through AR visualization. In order to investigate the feasibility of the proposed framework, a case study assessing the rebar layout of a lab-scaled formwork containing two rebar layers is conducted. The results of the case studies demonstrate that the proposed approach using laser scanning and AR has the potential to produce an intuitive and accurate quality assessment for the rebar layout.
Due to the aging of a building, 38.8% (about 2.82 million buildings) of the total buildings are old for more than 30 years after completion and are located in a blind spot for an inspection, except for buildings subject to regular legal inspection (about 3%). Such existing buildings require users to self-inspect themselves and make efforts to take preemptive risks. The scope of this study was defined as the general public's visual self-inspection of buildings and was limited to structural members that affect the structural stability of old buildings. This study categorized possible damage to reinforced concrete to check the structural safety of buildings and proposed a checklist to prevent the damage. A damage assessment methodology was presented during the inspection, and a self-inspection scenario was tested through a chatbot connection. It is believed that it can increase the accessibility and convenience of non-experts and induce equalized results when performing inspections, according to the chatbot guide.
In recent, unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) have been widely used for various purposes, such as safety inspection, facility condition inspection, progress monitoring, in the architecture engineering, and construction (AEC) industry. This technology can provide visual assets regarding the conditions of construction jobsites as well as constructed facilities during flying over the point of interests. With the significant interests in this advancement, the recent studies have presented how the UAS can be applied fro different types of facilities (e.g., buildings, power genereation systems, roads, or bridges) to inspect the current conditions of them for safe operations as well as public's safety. This study reviewed the receent studies to document their scientific findings and practical contributions, as well as provided the overview of further implications for future studies.
This paper presents a case study about the damages on the structural elements of a cast in place reinforced concrete (RC) building after a big fire which was able to be controlled after six hours. The fire broke off at the $2^{nd}$ basement floor of the building, which has five basements, one ground, and two normal floors. As a result of intensely stocked ignitable materials, it spread out to the all of the upstairs. In visual inspection, most of the typical fire damages were observed (such as spalling, net-like cracks, crumbled plasters, bared or visible reinforcement). Also, failures of the $2^{nd}$ basement columns were encountered. It has been concluded that the severity failures of the columns at the $2^{nd}$ basement caused utterly deformation of the building, which is responsible for the massive damages on the beam-column connections. All of the observed damages were categorized related to the types and presented separated regarding the floors. Besides to the visual inspection, the numerical analysis was run to verify the observed damaged on the building for columns, beams, and the connection regions. It is concluded from the study that several parameters such as duration of the fire, level of the temperature influence on the damages to the RC building. Also, it is highlighted by the study that if the damaged building is considered on the overall structural system, it is not able to satisfy the minimum service requirements neither gravity loads nor earthquake conditions.
Efflorescence is a phenomenon primarily caused by a carbonation process in concrete structures. Efflorescence can cause concrete degradation in the long term; therefore, it must be accurately assessed by proper inspection. Currently, the assessment is performed on the basis of visual inspection or image-based inspection, which may result in the subjective assessment by the inspectors. In this paper, a novel approach is proposed for the objective and quantitative assessment of concrete efflorescence using hyperspectral imaging (HSI). HSI acquires the full electromagnetic spectrum of light reflected from a material, which enables the identification of materials in the image on the basis of spectrum. Spectral angle mapper (SAM) that calculates the similarity of a test spectrum in the hyperspectral image to a reference spectrum is used to assess efflorescence, and the reference spectral profiles of efflorescence are obtained from theUSGS spectral library. Field tests were carried out in a real building and a bridge. For each experiment, efflorescence assessed by the proposed approach was compared with that assessed by image-based approach mimicking conventional visual inspection. Performance measures such as accuracy, precision, and recall were calculated to check the performance of the proposed approach. Performance-related issues are discussed for further enhancement of the proposed approach.
Due to recent enhance of safety law and regulations in construction sites, safety inspectors have been more required in construction sites. However, most of them are novice for safety inspection which have not enough experience and skill. Therefore, the novice safety inspector's performance on hazard recognition needs to be improved for effective safety management. The performance of safety inspection is influenced by the inspector's experience and background because the inspection is usually conducted by the inspector's eyes. Therefore, there is a difference in safety inspection performance between novice and experienced safety managers. This study aims to analyze the gap of risk perception between novice and experienced safety managers using quantitative visual data. For this objective, this study conducted eye tracking experiments for novice and experienced group to evaluate cognitive performance of safety risk factors. The results provides the level of safety awareness based on their experience in construction safety. The limitation of this study is a lack of the number of samples used in this study and did not consider the various characteristics of the participants. If these limitations are supplemented in future research, it can be used to develop safety education contents for novice safety managers.

This study is conducted for the evaluation of corrosion and lifetime prediction of fire extinguishing pipelines in residential buildings. The fire extinguishing pipeline is made of carbon steel. Twenty-four samples were selected among all the fire extinguishing pipelines in a building; the selection was based on specimenspositions, pipeline diameters, and pipeline thickness. Analysis was conducted by using the results of visual inspection, electrochemical potentiodynamic anodic polarization test, pitting depth measurements, and extreme value statistics with the Gumbel distribution. The maximum pitting depth and remaining life were statistically predicted using extreme value statistics. During visual inspection, pitting corrosion was observed in several samples. In addition, extreme value statistics demonstrated that there were several pipelines that were very sensitive to pitting corrosion. However, the pitting corrosion was not critical in all the pipelines; thus, it was necessary to change only those pipelines that were severely corroded.
