  • In this paepr, we present a video-on-demand (VOD) system design model that address and integrates a number of inter-related issues. Then with analysis and performance evaluation, we investigate various aspects of disk and buffer managements in the given model. Based on the analysis results, we suggest that a distributed buffering scheme with intermediate buffers may te useful to transform bursty disk accesses into a continuous stream for for glitch-free performance of VOD systems. Also, through simulation, we illustrate that massive multimedia information storage design techniques such as prefetching, clustered striping, and real-time disk scheduling integrated with the distributed buffering mechanism may enhance end-to-end real-time performance of VOD systems under wide-area networks.

  • We present a performance evaluation model of cell reassembly mechanism in an ATM switching system. An ATM switching system may be designed so that communications between processors of its control part can be performed via its switching network rather than a separate inter-processor communications network. In such a system, there should be interface to convert inter-processor communication traffic from message format to cell format and vice versa, that is, mechanisms to perform the segmentation and reassembly sublayer. In this paper, we employ a continuous-time Markov chain for the performance evaluation model of cell reassembly mechanism with individual buffering, judicially defining the states of the mechanism. Performance measures such as message loss probability and average reassembly delay are obtained in closed forms. Some numerical illustrations are given for the performance analysis and dimensioning of the cell reassembly mechanism.

  • External social support for family can be an important resource for families to overcome economic pressure, and can be a way to understand the concept and process of family resilience in the context of Korean economic crisis. To explore the role of external social support that alleviates the negative effects of economic pressure on marital satisfaction, the buffering effects were tested in two ways. First, the interaction effect between external social support and economic pressure on marital satisfaction was tested using hierarchical linear regression model. Second, the scores of marital satisfaction were plotted by the median scores of economic pressure and external social support. Results from the analyses of 191 couples (382 husbands and wives) indicated that external social support help families by buffering the negative effects of economic pressure on marital satisfaction by interacting with economic pressure.

  • This paper proposes a high-speed texture mapping algorithm and apply it for the realtime face animation. The mapping process devide into pixel correspondences, Z-buffering, and pixel value interpolation. Pixel correspondences and Z-buffering are calculated exactly through the algorithm. However, pixel values interpolation is approximated without additional calculations. The algorithm dramatically reduces the operations needed for texture mapping. Only three additions are needed in calculation of a pixel value. We simulate the 256$\times$240 pixel facial image with about 100 pixel face width. Simulation results shows that frame generation speed are about 60, 44, 21 frames/second in pentium PC 550MHz, 400MHz, 200MHz, respectively,

  • The Full-Off Fitting of Movable Bracket using conventional line have received a dynamic contact impact between contact wire and pantograph of electric rolling stock, so this impact cause a rapid vibration of foreword and back near the supporting point of movable bracket. The Full-Off Fitting on Movable Bracket in conventional line differs from that in high speed line. Now conventional line have required a speed up for new electric locomotive and electric car. In speed-up track and big impact place, the Full-Off Fitting and the dropper often get demage. We have done a study of buffering function to solve that problem in conventional line. We have find a need adopting buffer fitting. It is decrease a dynamic impact between contact wire and pantograph of electric rolling stock.

  • $Ca^{2+}$ is a universal signalling molecule that affects a variety of cellular processes including cardiac development. The majority of intracellular $Ca^{2+}$ is stored in the endoplasmic and sarcoplasmic reticulum of muscle and non-muscle cells. Calreticulin is a well studied $Ca^{2+}$-buffering protein in the endoplasmic reticulum, and calreticulin deficiency is embryonic lethal due to impaired cardiac development. Despite calsequestrin being the most abundant $Ca^{2+}$-buffering protein in the sarcoplasmic reticulum, viability is maintained in embryos without calsequestrin and normal $Ca^{2+}$ release and contractile function is observed. The $Ca^{2+}$ homeostasis regulated by the endoplasmic and sarcoplasmic reticulum is critical for the development and proper function of the heart.

  • Moisture transfer property of fabrics has known as one of the most important factors deciding wearer's subjective comfort not only thermally but also of sensorial. As a decisive property of fabric materials in determining human sensorial comfort, moisture vapor management property of heat resistant workwear material was examined in terms of increasing and decreasing rate and maximum value of relative humidity in the microclimate under the sweat pulse situation. An unique moisture regulation index, B$_{d}$, was calculated from the measurements using a novel dynamic sweating hot plate apparatus and was used to assess the buffering capacity of fabrics against a moisture vapor sweat pulse.e.

  • Improving the quality of service in IP networks is a major challenge for real-time voice communications. In particular, packet arrival-delay variation, so-called "jitter," is one of the main factors that degrade the quality of voice in mobile devices with the voice-over Internet protocol (VoIP). To resolve this issue, a receiver-based enhanced timing recovery algorithm combined with active jitter estimation is proposed. The proposed algorithm copes with the effect of transmission jitter by expanding or compressing each packet according to the predicted network delay and variations. Additionally, the active network jitter estimation incorporates rapid detection of delay spikes and reacts to changes in network conditions. Extensive simulations have shown that the proposed algorithm delivers high voice quality by pursuing an optimal trade-off between average buffering delay and packet loss rate.

  • In this paper, we describe the design, implementation and evaluation for a multimedia conferencing system with intramedia and intermedia synchronization support between audio and video. The synchronization mechanism proposed here is capable of dynamically adapting to various network conditions thus providing an optimized QoS. In realizing the system based on this mechanism, NeVoT on Mbone is used for audio and VIC for video. Furthermore a synchromization controller is designed and realized with a unique process in supporting intermedia synchronization. Each media agents handling its media stream are modified with intramedia synchronization function. And a communicative function between media agents and synchronization controller is added as well for intermedia synchronization function. Each media agents function reports its buffering status to the synchronization control process which in turn send out optimized buffering delay value thus supporting intermedia synchronization. The realized system is configured and tested on Ethernet and ATM network where performance measurements were performed and its effective synchronization support has been assured.

  • This paper aims to support delay-sensitive multimedia applications by suggesting a mechanism in which maintains almost constant end-to-end delay thus providing the optimum playout synchronization. For this task the sum of network delay and buffering delay is entiredly managed and to eliminate little delay fluctuations and instantaneous delays at a buffer and a network, a low pass filter is used. Furthermore the correction function, which is used for maintaining the buffering level ot a reference value, is a non-linear step function, unlike the existing linear and continuous function. it has a different step sizes adapting to a traffic characteristics of a network congestion. the proposed mechanism has been confirmed of it sefficiency through SLAM-II netowrk.
