  • Late Tremadocian radiolarian faunas were first recovered from the Cow Head Group, Newfoundland, Canada. Three faunal assemblages were recognized, one from Martin Point and two from Western Brook Pond in Gros Morne National Park. These radiolarian faunas include six families, 11 genera, and 26 species. In these faunas, six genera (Archeoproventocitum, Cowheadia, Neopalaeospiculum, Protospongentactinia, Protoproventocitum and Westernbrookia) and 17 species (Archeoproventocitum nudiformum, A. retiformum, Aspiculum densum, A. jamesi, A. multistratum, A. gigantium, Cowheadia duplextesta, Neopalaeospiculum densum, N. laxum, N. transformum, Pararcheoentactinia stilla, Protospongentactinia spongiosa, Protoproventocium nazarovii, P. aitchisoni, Westernbrookia cancella, W. diversa, and W. ovata) are new. Late Tremadocian faunas are characterized by the appearance of proventocitiids and diversification of aspiculumids and reduction of protoentactiniids and echidniniids that had flourished in the early Tremadocian faunas. An examination of the biostratigraphic range of co-occurring conodonts indicates that the radiolarian faunas described here belong to the late Tremadocian, from the Lower Diversity Interval through the M. dianae Zone to the lower P. proteus Zone. With the recovery of conodonts of the R. manitouensis Zone from other localities in the study area, the correlation among Martin Point, Western Brook Pond, Broom Point, and St. Paul's Inlet strata has became more precise. Also, the middle and late Tremadocian Cow Head Group can be subdivided into the R. manitouensis Zone, the Low Diversity Interval, and the M. dianae Zone of North America. The lower P. proteus Zone of the latest Tremadocian for northern Europe is recognized in the Western Brook Pond South section.

  • Symptom of the mosaic disease of black locust which is presently widespread in Korea was observed and transmission of the disease was investigated by means of grafting Since its symptom was typically mosaic and its transmission was easily accomplished, the disease was considered to be caused by a virus. In investigation of transmission by grafting, it was found out that the discase was easily transmitted in both of the following cases, i. e., healthy seedlings grafted with diseased scions and diseased roots with healthy scions. In the healthy seedlings plus diseased scions grafting, some grafted seedlings were purposedly deprived of the diseased scions after, a certain length of time(10∼30 days), while some were left grafted. The former case showed much higher transmission rate than the latter case, but no fluctuation in rate of transmission by the length of contact period(10-30 days) was recognized. And even when the union between stock and diseased scion by callusing was not successful, the transmission was withnesed. On the basis of the symptom, transmission by grafting, and possibility of transmission by sap inoculation(not published yet), it is supposed that the mosaic virus belongs to the group of the black locust mosaic virus that has been reported in southeastern Europe by Atanasoff(1935) and Milinko et al(1961). It is very likely that the witches' broom of black locust recorded by Myung-O Kim et al(1961) in Korea is the mosaic disease.

  • In order to clarify the mecahnism of histological barriers to pathogens of witches' broom diseased in sweet potatoes, this experiment has been conducted to observe the relationship between pathological characters and the transfer of mycoplasmae in the shoot apex. The material used the experiment is the sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lamm. Suwon 147). In the experiment regarding of mycoplasmae, the upper limit zone of transfer of mycoplasmae is examined by way of the process of free stock and the shoot apex of a infected part in nature, observed in the culture of each part of the diseased plant which is cut to a certain length. The pathological change pattern of tissues infected with mycoplasmae has been observed under the light and electron microscopes. As a result of this experiment, the following conclusion was arrived at. 1. It has been ascertained that the mycoplasmae are not existent in a promeristem and primary meristem zone from the meristem dome, and is existent in the lower part of the vascular differentiation zone, after which differential tissues the mycoplasmae become progressively enlarged, and before which undifferential tissues it become progressively immatured and diminished in size. 2. It can be suggested that mycoplasmae may not be existed in the shoot meristem, be cause the passing structures such as sieve area and plasmodesma which can be pass ed immatured mycoplasmae is undifferentiated. 3. In the tissue culture, free stock can be obtained in the zone between 1.0-1.5mm of the shoot apex, while it cannot in the 2.0-3.0mm zone, because of infection by mycoplasmae. It is suggested that immature mycoplasmae may be diffused according to temperature ($28{\pm}1^{\circ}C$) in tissue culture process.

  • Ocean Scanning Multispectral Imager (OSMI) is a payload on the Korean Multi-Purpose SATellite (KOMPSAT) to perform worldwide ocean color monitoring for the study of biological oceanography. The instrument images the ocean surface using a whisk-broom motion with a swath width of 800 km and a ground sample distance (GSD) of less than 1 km over the entire field-of-view (FOV). The instrument is designed to have an on-orbit operation duty cycle of 20% over the mission lifetime of 3 years with the functions of programmable gain/offset and on-orbit image data storage. The instrument also performs sun calibration and dark calibration for on-orbit instalment calibration. The OSMI instrument is a multi-spectral imager covering the spectral range from 400 nm to 900 nm using a Charge Coupled Device (CCD) Focal Plane Array (FPA). The ocean colors are monitored using 6 spectral channels that can be selected via ground commands after launch. The instrument performances are fully measured for 8 basic spectral bands centered at 412, 443, 490, 510, 555, 670, 765 and 865 nm during ground characterization of instalment. In addition to the ground calibration, the on-orbit calibration will also be used for the on-orbit band selection. The on-orbit band selection capability can provide great flexibility in ocean color monitoring.

  • We are studying on the home economics, particularly tools and machines used in household affairs. The object of this paper is to rationalize house cleaning method and to improve the used cleaning tools. We have made a social survey in Korea about the real situation of house cleaning as the first phase of this research. The contents are as follows: 1) The consciousness of housemakers for house cleaning. 2) The methods of house cleaning. 3) The used type of vacuum cleaner. 4) Merits and demerits of vacuum cleaner. 5) Troubles of vacuum cleaner etc. The results has been made in comparison with the same social survey in japan and a small scale different survey in The United States of America by auther in 1979. The results are as follow (in Korea). 1. The almost of housemakers are affirmative in charge of household affairs(95%). 2. In household affairs, only 9% of housemakers dislike cleaning work, but 40% of housemakers do not a cleaning work as a daily periodically. 3. In general household, they do a cleaning work with broom, duster and dust cloth, and then the cleaning work is faily backward in mechanization(The possession of vacuum is 19%). 4. The main dissatisfaction of vacuum cleaner is a noise, and also the difficulty of the cleaning in a corner of the room is shown in high percentage too.

  • Animal welfare has become a growing concern affecting acceptability of agricultural systems in many countries around the world. An earlier Judeo-Christian interpretation of the Bible (1982) that dominion over animals meant that any degree of exploitation was acceptable has changed for most people to mean that each person has responsibility for animal welfare. This view was evident in some ancient Greek writings and has parallels in Islamic teaching. A minority view of Christians, which is a widespread view of Jains, Buddhists and many Hindus, is that animals should not be used by humans as food or for other purposes. The commonest philosophical positions now, concerning how animals should be treated, are a blend of deontological and utilitarian approaches. Most people think that extremes of poor welfare in animals are unacceptable and that those who keep animals should strive for good welfare. Hence animal welfare science, which allows the evaluation of welfare, has developed rapidly.
