Inactivation of Listeria monocytogenes in Brine and Saline by Alternating High-Voltage Pulsed Current

  • The inactivating efficiency of alternating high-voltage pulsed (AHVP) current was investigated in brine (20 w/v% NaCl) and saline (0.9 w/v% NaCl) inoculated with $1\times10^7$ cells/ml of Listeria monocytogenes. AHVP current at 12 V with 1 pulse completely inactivated L. monocytogenes in brine within 3 ms, while the bacteria in saline were fully inactivated by 10-pulsed electric treatment at 12 V within the same time. Electron microscopic observation demonstrated substantial structural damage of electrically treated L. monocytogenes in brine. These results suggest that AHVP treatment would be effective for the rapid and complete inactivation of L. monocytogenes in brine or saline solution.

'Brine Management through brine mining of trace metals' for developing Secondary sources of nuclear fuel

  • The brine and seawater are important and largely untapped sources of critical trace metals and elements. The coupling of selective recovery of trace metals from seawater/brine with desalination plants gives an added advantage of energy credits to desalination plants and as well as reduce the cost of desalinated water. In this paper, status review on recovery of important trace metals and other alkali metals from seawater is presented. The potential of Indian desalination plants for recovery of trace metals, based on recovery ratio of 0.35 is also highlighted. Studies carried out by the process based on adsorption using Radiation Induced Grafted (RIG) polymeric adsorbents and then fractional elutions are presented. The fouling factors due to bio fouling and dirt fouling have been estimated for various locations of interest through field trails. The pay loader in the form of compact Contactor Assembly with minimum pressure drop, for loading specially designed radiation grafted sorbent in leaflet form has been briefed, as required for plant scale facility. The typical conceptual process design details of farm assembly of project CRUDE are described.

수적(垂滴)법을 이용한 이산화탄소 지중저장 조건에서의 염수-이산화탄소 간 계면장력 측정 (Measuring Interfacial Tension between Brine and Carbon Dioxide in Geological CO2 Sequestration Conditions using Pendant Bubble Methods)

  • This experimental study was aimed to estimate interfacial tension of brine-$CO_2$ by using a pendant bubble method and image analysis. Measurements were performed for wide ranges of temperatures, pressures, and salinities covering reservoir conditions in Pohang basin, a possible candidate for $CO_2$ storage operation in Korea. The profiles of $CO_2$ bubbles in brine obtained from image analysis with the densities of brine and $CO_2$ from previous studies were applied to Laplace-Young equation for calculating interfacial twnsion in brine-$CO_2$ system. The experimental results reveals that the interfacial tension is significantly affected by reservoir conditions such as pressure, temperature and water salinity. For conditions of constant temperature and water salinity, the interfacial tension decreases as pressure increases for low pressures (P < $P_c$), and approaches to a constant value for high pressures. For conditions of constant pressure and water salinity, the interfacial tension increases as temperature increases for T < $T_c$, with an asymptotic trend towards a constant value for high temperatures. For conditions of constant pressure and temperature, the interfacial tension increases with increasing water salinity. The trends in changes of interfacial tension can be explained by the effects of the reservoir conditions on the density difference of brine and $CO_2$, and the solubility of $CO_2$ in brine. The information on interfacial tensions obtained from this research can be applied in predicting the migration and distribution of injecting and residual fluids in brine-$CO_2$-rock systems in deep geological environments during geological $CO_2$ sequestrations.

생선회의 육질향상에 관한 연구 1. 생선회 육질향상에 미치는 저온 브라인 온도의 영향 (Improvement of Sliced Raw Fish Texture 1 Effect of Cold Brine Temperature on Sliced Raw Fish Texture)

  • To improve the sensory quality of sliced raw fish, the effect of cold brine temperature on the texture properties was investigated. Fishes were immersed in cold brine by various condition and killed instantly by spiking at the head. The onset of rigor-mortis was accelerated by decrease of immersion temperature. Also, the time reaching full rigor was shortened remarkably too. However, the rigor index of samples immersed in the cold brine decreased more than that of samples killed instantly. Rigor index was the highest in samples killed instantly, followed by $0^{\circ}C,\;-5^{\circ}C,\;-10^{\circ}C,\;-12.5^{\circ}C,\;-15^{\circ}C\;and\;-20^{\circ}C$ in that order. The breaking strength of samples immersed in the cold brine increased slowly but did not increase through all the conditions in the samples. Breaking strength of all samples immersed in the cold brine decreased significantly after reaching the maximum values (p<0.05). The lactate content of muscle was increased by the decreased brine temperature, however ATP content decreased. Minimum lactate and maximum ATP content in fish muscle showed at $-12.5^{\circ}C$. Those results demonstrate that optimal temperature for improvement of sliced raw fish quality by cold brine was $-12.5^{\circ}C.$

배추 절임 중 반복사용 폐염수의 여과처리 효과 (Effects of Filtration on the Characteristics of Reused Waste Brine in Kimchi Manufacturing)

  • 김치 공장에서 배추 절임염수의 반복사용으로 인해 발생하는 고농도 폐염수에 의한 환경오염을 방지하고 이를 공업용수로 재활용하는 방법을 모색하고자 모래와 활성탄을 여과장치에 활용하는 가능성을 조사하였다. 배추를 5회 반복 절임수 사용 방식으로 절임하면서 발생하는 폐염수의 특성을 염도, 가용성 고형물, pH, 혼탁도, COD 및 미생물 총균수에 대해 측정하였다. 그리고 3회 및 5회 절임에 사용한 폐염수를 모래(1차여과)와 활성탄(2차여과)에 통과시켜 여과한 다음, 여과 전후의 폐염수특성을 측정하여 폐염수에 대한 여과효과를 조사하였다. 그 결과 염도, 가용성 고형물, 혼탁도 및 COD는 절임을 반복함에 따라 증가하는 경향을 나타내었으나, 여과처리에 의해 그 수치들이 현저하게 낮아지는 효과를 나타내었다. 또한 절임이 반복될수록 염수의 pH는 낮아져서 산성을 띠다가, 모래관 처리에 의해 중성의 pH 값을 가지게 되었고, 활성탄 통과 후에는 약알칼리성의 pH 값으로 증가하였다. 미생물 수 측정 결과는, 절임 반복에 의해 미생물 번식이 급격히 증가하였다가 여과처리에 의해 초기염수 수준으로 낮아졌으며, 활성탄에 의한 흡착효과도 뚜렷하게 관찰되었다.

  • Recent development of lithium ion batteries for vehicles industries have led to a boom in lithium exploration and development for the new generation of batteries. One of the cheapest sources of lithium is the brines hosted in the aquifers of the arid intermontane-closed salar basins. Because the resource is a fluid, with the attendant problems of in-aquifer mixing, reorganization, and lower recovery factors compared with most metalliferous and industrial mineral deposits due to reliance on pumping of the brine from wells for extraction, existing codes for filing resource and reserve estimates require new approach for these prospects. Evaluation of brine resources is complex and requires participation of a variety of qualified experts such as hydrogeologists, geologists, geochemists and chemical engineers. The technical reports disclosing the results of these estimates should reflect the inputs of multi-disciplinary approaches. The requirements for brine resource and reserve evaluation, drawing on several examples from the experiences in the Central Andes are reviewed in this paper.

Effects of a Pre-Filter and Electrolysis Systems on the Reuse of Brine in the Chinese Cabbage Salting Process

  • In this study, the effects of a pre-filter system and electrolysis system on the safe and efficient reuse of brine in the cabbage salting process were investigated. First, sediment filter-electrolyzed brine (SF-EB) was selected as brine for reuse. Then, we evaluated the quality and microbiological properties of SF-EB and Chinese cabbage salted with SF-EB. The salinity (9.4%) and pH (4.63) of SF-EB were similar to those of control brine (CB). SF-EB turbidity was decreased (from 0.112 to 0.062) and SF-EB residual chlorine (15.86 ppm) was higher than CB residual chlorine (0.31 ppm), and bacteria were not detected. Salinity (2.0%), pH (6.21), residual chlorine (0.39 ppm), chromaticity, hardness, and chewiness of cabbage salted with SF-EB were similar to those of cabbage salted with CB. The total bacterial count in cabbage salted with CB was increased as the number of reuses increased (from 6.55 to 8.30 log CFU/g), whereas bacteria in cabbage salted with SF-EB was decreased (from 6.55 to 5.21 log CFU/g). These results show that SF-EB improved the reusability of brine by removing contaminated materials and by sterilization.

이종 PCM의 선택적 상변화 시의 열전달 해석 (Numerical Study of Heat Transfer with Selective Phase Change in Two Different Phase Change Materials)

  • A numerical analysis of solid-liquid phase change was performed on a heat transfer module which consisted of circulating water path (BRINE), heat transfer plate (HTP) and phase change material (PCM) layers, such as high temperature PCM (HPCM, $78{\sim}79^{\circ}C$) and low temperature PCM (LPCM, $28{\sim}29^{\circ}C$). There were five arrangements, consisting of BRINE, HTP, LPCM and HPCM layers in the heat transfer module. The time and heat transfer rate for melting/solidification was compared to their arrangements, against each other. As results, the numerical time without convection was longer than the experimental one for melting/solidification. Moreover, the melting/solidification with the BRINE I-LPCM-BRINE II-HPCM arrangement was faster(10 hours) than the others; HPCM-BRINE-LPCM, BRINE I-HPCM-LPCM-BRINE II one.

한국의 방짜유기에 가해지는 염수처리의 효과에 관한 연구 (Effect of Brine Treatment Applied in the Manufacture of Traditional Forged High Tin Bronzes of Korea)

  • 한국의 전통 방짜유기 제작과정에서 수행되는 염수처리가 가공 도중 유기 표면에 생성되는 흑색 산화막 제거에 유용한 것으로 추정되고 있으나 그 효과에 대하여 체계적인 연구가 수행된 사례는 찾기 어렵다. 본 연구에서는 염수처리가 청동기 제작에 미치는 역할을 밝히기 위하여 제작재현 실험과 성분분석 실험을 실시하였다. 먼저 유기공방에서 다양한 방법으로 염수처리 실험을 수행하였으며 여기에서 얻어진 결과를 바탕으로 실험실에서 자체 제작한 구리합금을 대상으로 두드림, 염수농도, 합금비율 등의 조건을 달리하며 다양한 실험을 수행함으로써 염수처리가 초래하는 효과를 밝히고자 하였다. 실험결과 염수처리를 통하여 고온에서 발생하는 산화막이 용이하게 제거되는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 이는 염수의 주성분인 염소(Cl)와 청동에 포함된 주석의 상호 작용에 기인하는 것으로 드러났으며 염수의 또 다른 성분인 나트륨(Na)은 산화막 제거에 별다른 영향을 미치지 못하는 것으로 판단되었다. 특히 한국의 전통 방짜유기 합금 조성인 주석함량 22%의 청동합금에서는 열간가공 수행 여부와 관계없이 염수처리를 통하여 산화막이 제거되었으며 이때 염수의 농도는 0.5% 이상이어야 효과를 볼 수 있는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 한편 납이 포함된 구리합금에서는 염수처리 효과가 나타나지 않았다. 이는 융점이 낮은 납이 녹으면서 시편 표면에 막을 형성함에 기인하는 것으로 추정된다.

Advanced Tenderization of Brine Injected Pork Loin as Affected by Ionic Strength and High Pressure

  • This study investigated the effects of brine injection and high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) on the quality characteristics of pork loin. Brine with ionic strength conditions (0.7% vs 1.5% NaCl, w/v) were injected into pork loins, and the meat was pressurized up to 500 MPa for 3 min. As a quality indicator, moisture content, color, cooking loss and texture profile analysis (TPA) of pork loins were estimated. Based on the results, brine with low ionic strength (0.7% NaCl) resulted in low injection efficiency and high cooking loss, although, it improved tenderness of pork loin at moderate pressure level (~200 MPa). While high ionic strength condition (1.5% NaCl injection) lowered the hardness of pork loins at relatively high HHP level (400-500 MPa), it also caused high cooking loss. To commercialize the brine injected pork loins, it was necessary to regulate brine compositions, which was not evaluated in this study. Nevertheless, the present study demonstrated that brine injection followed by moderate pressure (200 MPa) could improve the tenderness of pork loins without causing other major quality losses.
