  • An experimental study is made to improve the efficiency of floating breakwaters. Wave transmission coefficients highly depend on the drafts of the floating breakwaters but not on the mooting chain weights. Array of two breakwaters can improve the efficiency of the floating breakwaters. Proper draft combination of the fore and the aft bodies may improve the performance of the floating breakwaters lot various wave periods.

  • The aim of this study is to evaluate the public preference to the breakwaters of fishing harbors in Taiwan, so that the results could be applied to the successive study of breakwater landscape improvement. Among the breakwaters' photographs those took on the fishing harbors, this study picked up 4 photos for demonstration and 60 for questionnaire according to their spatial types configured with crest of breakwater, crown wall, and armoring blocks) and other landscape factors. The preference evaluation was conducted by questionnaire to the public, 385 effective questionnaires were taken into analysis. Results reveals: (1) the open, colorful, recreational and water-intimate breakwaters are preferred. (2) The combination types and visual elements (shapes, colors, textures, lines and scales) of breakwaters are also influence the public preference.

  • Ocean space utilization using VLFS(Very Large Floating Structures) can provide environmental impact free space by allowing sea water flow freely through the floating structure. Use of Pontoon type VLFS for that purpose needs employment of breakwaters for reduction of wave effects. Therefore, in order to maximize advantage of environmental impact free structure, the breakwater should be the one that can allow water flow freely through it, too. In this paper hydroelastic response of a pontoon type structure is analyzed considering breakwaters which allow water flow through its opening at bottom of the breakwaters. Mode superposition technique is used for solving equation of flexible body while interactions between the pontoon and breakwaters is considered based on generalized mode concept. Bi-quadratic nine node higher-order boundary element method is adopted for more accurate numerical treatment near sharp edged body shape. Performance of various combinations of breakwaters is investigated.

  • In this study, the run-up height and reflection property on slopes of S-berm and smooth slopes breakwaters are investigated by laboratory experiment. The run-up height analyzed the effect of reflection coefficient, surf similarity parameter. Measured reflection coefficients of smooth slope breakwaters are compared with those of S-berm breakwater with variable widths. In general, measured coefficients of S-berm breakwaters are smaller than those of smooth slope breakwaters.

  • The caisson-type breakwaters have been widely used in the area of harbor construction. Because of the importance of the breakwaters, structural health monitoring in the breakwaters by using appropriate methods is of great needs. In this study, a caisson-type breakwater that has fatigue cracks due to wave-impact is investigated. First, a signal-based structural health monitoring method is proposed for the breakwaters structures. Excitation and sensor systems are designed on finite element model and monitoring categories are also selected. Structural health monitoring was realized by using measured dynamic response signals and analyzed information.

  • Numerical analysis is performed on the wave transmission coefficient of various crown widths of the double-submerged breakwater and the triple-submerged breakwater, varying the distance between submerged breakwaters. The finite element method is used, and the fluid motion is considered as linearized two-dimensional potential flow. In case of the double- and triple-submerged breakwaters, as the width of submerged breakwater increases, the minimum wave transmission coefficient decreases and the wave period at which the minimum wave transmission coefficient occurs moves to a longer wave period the distance between submerged breakwaters at which the minimum wave transmission coefficient occurs becomes larger.

  • In this study, transmission and reflection of multi-directional random waves propagating over multi-arrayed submerged breakwaters are investigated using eigenfunction expansion method. The numerical analysis on the wave energy reflection of submerged breakwaters with various crown widths is carried out. Strong wave reflection is occurred at the Bragg reflection condition of the peak frequency. When relative heights and crown widths of breakwaters are equal to 0.6 and 0.4h, respectively, more than 25% of wave energy is reflected to off shore.

  • A breakwater has always been an ideal option to prevent shoreline erosion due to wave action as well as to maintain the tranquility in the lagoon area. The effects of the impinging wave on the structure could be analyzed and evaluated by several physical and numerical methods. An alternate approach to the numerical methods in the prediction of performance of a breakwater is Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools. In the recent decade many researchers have implemented several Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in the prediction of performance, stability number and scour of breakwaters. This paper is a comprehensive review which serves as a guide to the current state of the art knowledge in application of soft computing techniques in breakwaters. This study aims to provide a detailed review of different soft computing techniques used in the prediction of performance of different breakwaters considering various combinations of input and response variables.

  • The water wave characteristics of Bragg reflections from a train of fixed floating pontoon breakwaters was studied numerically. A numerical model of boundary discretization type was developed to calculate the wave field. The model was verified by comparing to analytical data in literature and good agreements were achieved. Series of parametric studies were conducted systematically to investigate the dependence of the reflected coefficients by the Bragg scattering on the design variables, including the spacing between the breakwaters, the total number of installed breakwaters, the draft and width do the breakwater, and wave length. Certain wave characteristics of the Bragg reflections were observed and discussed in details which might be of help for practical engineering applications in shoreline protection from incident waves.

  • Herein we investigate the mass transport velocity caused by the viscosity near the ocean structure such as circular pile and inclined breakwaters. The mass transport velocity which is represented by the sum of the Eulerian velocity and the stokes drift were derived by Carter, Liu and Mei(1973). The tangential components of the inviscid velocity field at the bottom needed in the calculation of the mass transport velocity is obtained by solving the scattering problem due to breakwaters. The matched asymptotic expansion technique is employed to obtain the inviscid flow fields scattered by inclined breakwaters. The numerical results show that heary sediments tends to be deposited near the center of breakwaters and that the narrowing of the entrance width results in reduction of the magnitude of mass transport.
