Among various mass transfer models to express adsorption rates for any adsorption processes, the linear driving force (LDF) model is used most. The present investigation aims at finding whether this model may be applied to real adsorption process for separation and removal of benzene. Comparison of numerical simulation results calculated by the LDF model with experimental data allowed us to find the mass transfer coefficients that are most appropriate for a specific adsorption process. Various breakthrough curves were obtained from experiments performed at many different temperatures and pressures, which in turn produced suitable mass transfer coefficients. These dependencies of mass transfer coefficient on temperature and pressure were represented by an Arrhenius type- and a power law type empirical equation, respectively.
Most sensing and instrumentation systems should have very higher sampling rate than required data rate not to miss important information. This means that the system can be inefficient in some cases. This paper introduces two new research areas about information acquisition with high accuracy from less number of sampled data. One is Compressed Sensing technology (which obtains original information with as little samples as possible) and the other is Super-Resolution technology (which gains very high-resolution information from restrictively sampled data). This paper explains fundamental theories and reconstruction algorithms of compressed sensing technology and describes several applications to geophysical exploration. In addition, this paper explains the fundamentals of super-resolution technology and introduces recent research results and its applications, e.g. FRI (Finite Rate of Innovation) and LIMS (Least-squares based Iterative Multipath Super-resolution). In conclusion, this paper discusses how these technologies can be used in geophysical exploration systems.
Service-related research in accordance with the transition to the service economy era has been conducted in a wide variety of ways, but the development of a service-related scale suitable for the present time is still insignificant. The purpose of this study is to define the nature of services and to develop measurement items for them. First, four categories of service nature were adopted in the previous study. The four categories are 'relationship', 'interactivity', 'horizontality', and 'harmony'. In this study, sub-factors and specific items of each of these four service essences were extracted and developed as measurable items. As a qualitative study, the four categories of sub-factors were extracted, and a mixed study was adopted to prove the reliability and validity of the extracted factors through quantitative studies. The scale items were identified through literature study, free response method, and Delphi technique, and the measurement items were refined through a second questionnaire of 30 Delphi panels composed of experts. As a result of the study, 15 out of 52 questions for relationship, 11 out of 45 questions for bilateral direction, 9 out of 33 questions for horizontality, and 17 out of 61 questions for harmonization were derived after secondary refining. Through this study, it was possible to uncover new essential items suitable for the service economy era. SNS, network, synergy, platform, system, real name, and breakthrough are concepts that have not been obtained in previous studies, and can be seen as contributions of this study. However, due to various limitations, this study did not cover all aspects of the service, but mainly dealt with people-centered services, which are part of the service. In the future, it is necessary to study the development of service essence measurement items for the overall aspect of services developed according to the evolution of the service economy era.
This study was carried out to evaluate the performance of a small chamber sampling and analytical method for the measurement of total volatile organic compounds (TVOC) and formaldehyde (HCHO) emission from building materials. While VOC was determined by the adsorbent tube sampling and sequential thermal desorption coupled with GC/MSD analysis, formaldehyde sampled with DNPH-silica cartridge was analyzed by HPLC. Wide-range performance criteria such as repeatability, desorption efficiency, emission chamber recovery test, duplicate precision, breakthrough volume and method detection limits were investigated for the evaluation of small chamber method. The overall precision of the small chamber sampling and analytical methods was estimated within 20~30% for target compounds. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that the small chamber sampling and analytical method can be reliably applied for the measurement of building materials pollutants.
The first Japanese pilot-scale $CO_2$ sequestration project has been undertaken in an onshore saline aquifer, near Nagaoka in Niigata prefecture, and time-lapse well logs were carried out in observation wells to detect the arrival of injected $CO_2$ and to evaluate $CO_2$ saturation in the reservoir. $CO_2$ was injected into a thin permeable zone at the depth of 1110m at a rate of 20-40 tonnes per day. The total amount of injected $CO_2$ was 10400 tonnes, during the injection period from July 2003 to January 2005. The pilot-scale demonstration allowed an improved understanding of the $CO_2$ movement in a porous sandstone reservoir, by conducting time-lapse geophysical well logs at three observation wells. Comparison between neutron well logging before and after the insertion of fibreglass casing in observation well OB-2 showed good agreement within the target formation, and the higher concentration of shale volume in the reservoir results in a bigger difference between the two well logging results. $CO_2$ breakthrough was identified by induction, sonic, and neutron logs. By sonic logging, we confirmed P-wave velocity reduction that agreed fairly well with a laboratory measurement on drilled core samples from the Nagaoka site. We successfully matched the history changes of sonic P-wave velocity and estimated $CO_2$ saturation a(ter breakthrough in two observation wells out of three. The sonic-velocity history matching result suggested that the sweep efficiency was about 40%. Small effects of $CO_2$ saturation on resistivity resulted in small changes in induction logs when the reservoir was partially saturated. We also found that $CO_2$ saturation in the $CO_2$-bearing zone responded to suspension of $CO_2$ injection.
Exposure measurement of agricultural worker to pesticide is one of important part of health risk assessment of pesticide. Therefore exposure matrices, apparatus, instruments and methods must be validated in advance to field experiment. In this study, method validation with an organophosphorus insecticide fenthion was carried out for exposure monitoring of agricultural worker. LOD and LOQ were 0.01 and 0.05 ng, respectively. Calibration curve linearity ($R^2$ > 0.999) and reproducibility (C.V. < 3%) were also excellent. Recovery at LOQ, 10LOQ and 100LOQ levels from gloves, socks, mask, patch, solid sorbent, glass fiber filter was 76~113% (C.V. < 3%). Trapping efficiency was 95~105% while no breakthrough was observed. Method validation for the exposure monitoring was established successfully through several experiments. Such method validation can be usually performed in laboratory and not much different for each pesticide so that, this techniques will be applied widely in research for pesticide exposure monitoring by combination with body surface area and respiration rates.
With the transition of archaeological recording method's transition from analog to digital, the 3D scanning technology has been actively adopted within the field. Research on the digital archaeological digital data gathered from 3D scanning and photogrammetry is continuously being conducted. However, due to cost and manpower issues, most buried cultural heritage organizations are hesitating to adopt such digital technology. This paper aims to present a digital recording method of relics utilizing open-source software and photogrammetry technology, which is believed to be the most efficient method among 3D scanning methods. The digital recording process of relics consists of three stages: acquiring a 3D model, creating a joining map with the edited 3D model, and creating an digital drawing. In order to enhance the accessibility, this method only utilizes open-source software throughout the entire process. The results of this study confirms that in terms of quantitative evaluation, the deviation of numerical measurement between the actual artifact and the 3D model was minimal. In addition, the results of quantitative quality analysis from the open-source software and the commercial software showed high similarity. However, the data processing time was overwhelmingly fast for commercial software, which is believed to be a result of high computational speed from the improved algorithm. In qualitative evaluation, some differences in mesh and texture quality occurred. In the 3D model generated by opensource software, following problems occurred: noise on the mesh surface, harsh surface of the mesh, and difficulty in confirming the production marks of relics and the expression of patterns. However, some of the open source software did generate the quality comparable to that of commercial software in quantitative and qualitative evaluations. Open-source software for editing 3D models was able to not only post-process, match, and merge the 3D model, but also scale adjustment, join surface production, and render image necessary for the actual measurement of relics. The final completed drawing was tracked by the CAD program, which is also an open-source software. In archaeological research, photogrammetry is very applicable to various processes, including excavation, writing reports, and research on numerical data from 3D models. With the breakthrough development of computer vision, the types of open-source software have been diversified and the performance has significantly improved. With the high accessibility to such digital technology, the acquisition of 3D model data in archaeology will be used as basic data for preservation and active research of cultural heritage.
