  • A composite box-girder with corrugated steel webs has been used in civil engineering practice as an alternative to the conventional pre-stressed concrete box-girder because of several advantages, such as high shear resistance without vertical stiffeners and an increase in the efficiency of pre-stressing due to the accordion effect. Many studies have been conducted on the shear buckling and flexural behavior of the composite box-girder with corrugated steel webs. However, the torsional behavior is not fully understood yet, and it needed to be investigated. Prior study of the torsion of the composite box-girder with corrugated steel webs has been developed by assuming that the concrete section is cracked prior to loading and doesn't have tensile resistance. This results in poor estimation of pre-cracking behaviors, such as initial stiffness. To overcome this disadvantage of the previous analytical model, an improved analytical model for torsion of the composite box-girder with corrugated steel webs was developed considering the concrete tension behavior in this study. Based on the proposed analytical model, a non-linear torsional analysis program for torsion of the composite box-girder with corrugated steel webs was developed and successfully verified by comparing with the results of the test. The proposed analytical model shows that the concrete tension behavior has significant effect on the initial torsional stiffness and cracking torsional moment. Finally, a simplified torsional moment-twist angle relationship of the composite box-girder with corrugated steel webs was proposed based on the proposed analytical model.

  • The conventional design of prestressed concrete box girder bridges has been based on the linear elastic analyses using simplified geometric models. To overcome the restriction involved in the simplifications, a macro element for the rational analysis of prestressed concrete box girder bridges with variable cross sections is incorporated in the present analysis. Through the adoption of nonlinear material models, the behaviour of prestressed box bridges up to ultimate loading stage can be examined. The time dependent material models included in the present macro element code enable to predict the long term behaviour of prestressed concrete box girder bridges. The proposed macro element code with the nonlinear material models and time dependent routines can be efficiently used for the realistic analysis of prestressed concrete box girder bridges with arbitrary shapes.

  • 2-edge box girder bridges have been widely used in civil engineering practice. However, these bridges show weakness in aerodynamic stability. To overcome this weakness, additional attachments, such as fairing and flap, are usually used. These additional attachments can increase the cost and decrease the constructability. Some previous researchers suggested an aerodynamically stabilized 2-edge box girder section, giving a slope to the edge box instead of installing additional attachments. However, their studies are limited to only dynamic stability, even though static aerodynamic coefficients are as important as dynamic stability. In this study, focus was given to the evaluation of static aerodynamic response for a stabilized 2-edge box girder section. For this, the slopes of the edge box were varied from $0^{\circ}$ to $17^{\circ}$ and static coefficients were obtained through a series of wind tunnel tests. The results were then compared with those from computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. From the results, it was found that the drag coefficients generally decreased with the increasing box slope angle, except for the specific box slope range. This range of box slope varied depending on the B/H ratio, and this should be avoided for the practical design of such a bridge, since it results in poor static aerodynamic response.

  • PSC box girder is widely used in a domestic bridge and overpass, etc., therefore, the design and construction technique for the PSC box girder is developing day by day. Even if it were so, however, the design for anchorage zone in PSC box girder has depended on common sense and empirical results. And it is the current situation that the designer has difficulty due to inadequacy of provisions in the domestic design code and lack of understanding for behavior of anchorage zone. Besides, the design based on Leonhardt's method is being done in general, but the design may be various even for the same structure because of the difference in a way of applying. In this paper, therefore, anchorage zone in PSC box girder bridge is analyzed and designed by using strut-tie model. Adequacy for the application of strut-tie model is verified by comparison with the way used in current design practice, and this study presents that strut-tie model can be a rational and an economical design than current design methods.

  • In case of continuous steel box-girder bridges, the magnitude of the longitudinal tensile stress on concrete in internal support is larger than the tensile strength of concrete. In this paper, the parametric study was performed to present the effective magnitude of the longitudinal prestress for reducing the longitudinal tensile stress to decrease under the tensile strength of concrete. The parametric study is conducted with changing the steel box-girder section and the span length of bridge. Three dimensional finite element analyses are conducted with ABAQUS program. The behavior of the steel box-girder bridge with prestress is investigated through experimental works on a analogous steel box-girder bridge model, and their results are compared with those of analytical studies.

  • It is well known that the thermal load in PSC(prestressed concrete) box-girder bridge is the principal cause of detrimental crack. The longitudinal stress caused by the lateral stress from the temperature gradient in slab of PSC box-girder bridge has a considerable influence on the durability and economy of bridge structures. As the basic study for the rational consideration of thermal load and the derivation of design guide, the inverse thermal analysis program for PSC box-girder bridges using field measurement data is developed. In this paper, thermal analyses are performed using field monitoring data for the sample PSC box-girder bridge. It is proposed that the link between monitoring program and the inverse analysis program is available.

  • A method of analysis is proposed for curved multicell box girder grillages. The method can be used to analyze box girder grillages comprising straight and/or curved segments. Each segment can be modelled by a number of beam elements. Each element has three nodes and the nodal degrees of freedom (DOF) consist of the six DOF for a conventional beam plus DOF to account for torsional warping, distortion, distortional warping, and shear lag. This element is an extension of a straight element that was developed earlier. For a more realistic analysis of the intersection regions of non-colinear box girder segments, the concept of a rigid connector is introduced, and the compatibility requirements between adjoining elements in those regions are discussed. The results of the analysis showed good agreement with the shell finite element results, but the proposed method of analysis needs a fraction of the time and effort compared to the shell finite element analysis.

  • The objective of this study is to develop the practical program which can check the constructible possibility of prestressed concrete box girder bridges for design. Checking constructible possibility is defined as checking the interference of each elements in a PSC box girder bridge and computing the distances of each elements. To check the constructible possibility of a PSC box girder bride, bridge must be modelled using solid in three dimension. By using a 3 dimensional solid modeling system, engineers can get the photo realistic 3D viewing images of the bridge and produce FEM analytic model of it. Users can manipulate their drawings easier and take off quantity of the whole structure and its elements as well as check the constructible possibility of their PSC box girder bridges.

  • Transverse stress and longitudinal crack which are induced by temperature difference in box-girder sections and slab of which box-girder is composed have an important effect on endurance and economical efficiency of bridges. The study on longitudinal behavior of bridges which are subject to thermal load is reflected on the design of bridges. But, the study on transverse behavior of bridges has been performed just recently in foreign countries of finding the cause of longitudinal crack and in Korea, has not been tried in spite of large temperature variance due to geographical condition. This study examines temperature distribution feature in box-girder sections and bridge behavior due to thermal load, with measuring temperature distribution and stress of PSC box-girder bridge which is being constructed actually, and investigates appropriateness of design thermal load of highway bridge design code.
