  • For the propagation of elastic waves in unbounded domains, absorbing boundary conditions at the fictitious numerical boundaries have been proposed. In this paper we focus on both first and second order paraxial boundary conditions(PBCs) in the framework of variational approximations which are based on paraxial approximations of the scalar and elastic wave equations. We propose a penalty function method for the treatment of PBCs and apply these into finite element analysis. The numerical verification of the efficiency is carried out through comparing PBCs with Lysmer-Kuhlemeyer's boundary conditions.

  • A shape design sensitivity of the elastic deformation due to a change of traction boundary condition is presented. The solution of governing equations for a linear elasticity problem is obtained by finite element method and the traction boundary is defined by design variables. The performance functional to be considered involves both the domain and boundary integral. Variations of geometry can be defined as design velocity. Using material derivative concept and adjoint equations, the design sensitivity is derived by Lagrange multiplier method. For a given geometry of a structure, the change of traction boundary is described by the tangential component of the design velocity only. The final result for the shape design sensitivity is formulated as the boundary integral form, the integrand is defined by tangential component of design velocity and first order derivatives of parameters. Numerical implementation of design sensitivity is discussed and is compared with the difference of the actual values.

  • A hybrid Cartesian/immersed boundary code is expanded to simulate flow field around a three-dimensional body which undergoes large dynamic deformation. Immersed boundary nodes are automatically distributed based on the edges crossing triangles on body boundary. Velocity vectors are reconstructed at those immersed boundary nodes along local normal lines to the boundary. The reconstruction of pressure is avoided using the hybrid staggered/non-staggered grid method. The developed code is validated through comparisons with other results on laminar flow over a sphere. The code is applied to simulate flow around a foil which is attached to a body of revolution and rotates under periodic deformation. The periodic variation of the tip vortex is observed and the effects of the deformation on hydrodynamic force acting on the body are investigated.

  • This paper deals with the open boundary problems, and two numerical schemes are used for the implementation of open boundary condition. One is to add the artificial damping term to dynamic free-surface boundary condition. Determination of suitable damping coefficient and the damping cone is the most important in this scheme. The other scheme is a modified Orlanski's method. This will be useful for the problems with unidirectional waves. A few typical free-surface wave problems are modeled for the numerical test. Method of solution is fundamental source-distribution method and the fully nonlinear boundary conditions are applied. The computed results are compared with those of others for the proof of practicality of these schemes.

  • In boundary estimation in Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT), conventional method is the modified Newton Raphson (mNR) method .The mNR is famous for good method since has good convergence and robustness against noisy data. But the mNR is low efficiency to get and update Jacobian matrix. So, the mNR become very slow algorithm. We propose the Quasi Newton (QN) method to improve efficiency which will lead to speed up in boundary estimation. The QN can improve a low efficiency by using estimated Jacobian matrix contrary to using exactly calculated Jacobian matrix, this used by the mNR. And finally, we propose the modified Quasi Newton (mQN) method because the QN has some problems such as bad early convergence rate and instability of 'divided by zero'. For the verification of the propose method, numerical experiments are conducted and the results show a good performance.

  • The diffraction of waves by three bottom fixed vertical circular cylinders is investigated by using the boundary element method. This method has been successfully applied to the isolated vertical circular cylinder and now is used to study the interaction between waves and multiple vertical cylinders. In this paper, a numerical analysis by the boundary element method is developed by the linear potential theory. The numerical analysis by the boundary element method is based on Green's second theorem and introduced to an integral equation for the fluid velocity potential around the vertical circular cylinders. To verify this method, the results obtained in present study are compared with the results computed by the multiple scattering method. The results of the comparisons show strong agreement. Also in this paper, several numerical examples are given to illustrate the effects of various parameters on the wave exciting force such are the separation distance, the wave number and the incident wave angle. This numerical computation method might be used broadly for the design of various offshore structures to be constructed in the future.

  • A numerical study on the use of the momentum interpolation method for flows with a large body force is presented. The inherent problems of the momentum interpolation method are discussed first. The origins of problems of the momentum interpolation methods are the validity of linear assumptions employed for the evaluation of the cell-face velocities, the enforcement of mass conservation for the cell-centered velocities and the specification of pressure and pressure correction at the boundary. Numerical experiments are performed for a typical flow involving a large body force. The numerical results are compared with those by the staggered grid method. The fact that the momentum interpolation method may result in physically unrealistic solutions is demonstrated. Numerical experiments changing the numerical grid have shown that a simple way of removing the physically unrealistic solution is a proper grid refinement where there is a large pressure gradient. An effective way of specifying the pressure and pressure correction at the boundary by a local mass conservation near the boundary is proposed, and it is shown that this method can effectively remove the inherent problem of the specification of pressure and pressure correction at the boundary when one uses the momentum interpolation method.

  • This paper presents a novel numerical method based on the extended moving least squares finite difference method(MLS FDM) for solving 1-D Stefan problem. The MLS FDM is employed for easy numerical modelling of the moving boundary and Taylor polynomial is extended using wedge function for accurate capturing of interfacial singularity. Difference equations for the governing equations are constructed by implicit method which makes the numerical method stable. Numerical experiments prove that the extended MLS FDM show high accuracy and efficiency in solving semi-infinite melting, cylindrical solidification problems with moving interfacial boundary.

  • The energy-transmitting boundary, which is used in the well-known finite element method (FEM) program FLUSH, is quite efficient for the earthquake response analysis of buildings considering soil-structure interaction. However, it is applicable only in the frequency domain. The author proposed methods for transforming frequency dependent impedance into the time domain, and studied the time domain transform of the boundary. In this paper, first, the estimation methods for both the halfspace condition under the bottom of the soil model and the pseudo three-dimensional effect were studied with the time domain transmitting boundary. Next, response behavior when using the boundary was studied in detail using a practical soil and building model. The response accuracy was compared with those using viscous boundary, and the boundary that considers the excavation force. Through these studies, the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed time domain transmitting boundary were confirmed.

  • This paper investigates that the ambiguity of the boundary between interior space and exterior space in architecture appears universally in history and reveals the various aspects of ambiguous boundary in architecture. The space is formed by the relationship with the surroundings and the boundary of two opposite spaces is apt to be ambiguous according to lots of complex factors. Before Modern Architecture the boundary of interior and exterior space had a tendency to be ambiguous by modifying compositional method of material boundary, that is semi interior-exterior space, the reversion of interior and exterior space and space in space. After Modern Architecture the meaning of physical boundary in space is lost along with dissolution of boundary over the society and the boundary of space comes to be dematerialized by the technology and the change of space perception. The phenomenon of deconstruction in spacial boundary accelerate increasingly according to fluid space, mutually interpenetrated space, visual transparency and adjustment of layers. And contemporary technology is collapsing the meaning itself of space division fundamentally.
