An alternative approach to extreme value analysis for design purposes

  • The asymptotic extreme value distributions of maxima are a natural choice when designing against future extreme events like flood peaks or wave heights, given a stationary time series. The generalized extreme value distribution (GEV) is often utilised in this context because it is seen as a convenient single expression for extreme event analysis. However, the GEV has a drawback because the location of the distribution bound relative to the data is a discontinuous function of the GEV shape parameter. That is, for annual maxima approximated by the Gumbel distribution, the data is also consistent with a GEV distribution with an upper bound (no lower bound) or a GEV distribution with a lower bound (no upper bound). A more consistent single extreme value expression for design purposes is proposed as the Weibull distribution of smallest extremes, as applied to transformed annual maxima. The Weibull distribution limit holds here for sufficiently large sample sizes, irrespective of the extreme value domain of attraction applicable to the untransformed maxima. The Gumbel, Type 2, and Type 3 extreme value distributions thus become redundant, together with the GEV, because in reality there is only a single asymptotic extreme value distribution required for design purposes - the Weibull distribution of minima as applied to transformed maxima. An illustrative synthetic example is given showing transformed maxima from the normal distribution approaching the Weibull limit much faster than the untransformed sample maxima approach the normal distribution Gumbel limit. Some New Zealand examples are given with the Weibull distribution being applied to reciprocal transformations of annual flood maxima, where the untransformed maxima follow apparently different extreme value distributions.

Along-Track Position Error Bound Estimation using Kalman Filter-Based RAIM for UAV Geofencing

  • Geofencing supports unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) operation by defining stay-in and stay-out regions. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has developed a prototype of the geofencing function, SAFEGUARD, which prevents stayout region violation by utilizing position estimates. Thus, SAFEGUARD depends on navigation system performance, and the safety risk associated with the navigation system uncertainty should be considered. This study presents a methodology to compute the safety risk assessment-based along-track position error bound under nominal and Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) failure conditions. A Kalman filter system using pseudorange measurements as well as pseudorange rate measurements is considered for determining the position uncertainty induced by velocity uncertainty. The worst case pseudorange and pseudorange rate fault-based position error bound under the GNSS failure condition are derived by applying a Receiver Autonomous Integrity Monitor (RAIM). Position error bound simulations are also conducted for different GNSS fault hypotheses and constellation conditions with a GNSS/INS integrated navigation system. The results show that the proposed along-track position error bounds depend on satellite geometries caused by UAV attitude change and are reduced to about 40% of those of the single constellation case when using the dual constellation.

Function of Cell-Bound and Released Exopolysaccharides Produced by Lactobacillus rhamnosus ATCC 9595

  • The physiological characteristics and function of the exopolysaccharide (EPS) produced by Lactobacillus rhamnosus ATCC 9595 were determined. The total quantity of EPS was rapidly increased to 496$\pm$20 mg/l during the exponential phase, and then maintained steadily during the stationary phase. During the exponential phase (18 h), the total EPS consisted of 61% cell-bound EPS (cb-EPS) and 39% released EPS (r-EPS), whereas the relative proportion of EPS during the stationary phase (48 h) was convered to 23% cb-EPS and 77% r-EPS. On gel permeation chromatography, cb-EPS was fractionated as a single peak of 8.6$\times10^6$ Da, whereas r-EPS was fractionated as two peaks with average molecular weights of 4.3$\times$10$^4$ and 8.6$\times10^6$ Da. Interestingly, both EPS species exhibited anticancer properties and cholera toxin-binding activities. Our results suggest that the EPS generated by L. rhamnosus ATCC 9595 might be suitable for use as a functional food or food supplement.

  • Consider a Jackson type closed queueing network in which each queue has a single exponential server. Assume that N customers are moving among .kappa. queues.   • In this paper, the performances of Cram$\acute{e}$r-Rao Lower Bound (CRLB) with Frequency Difference of Arrival (FDOA) measurements for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) tracking are investigated. We focus on two cases: the influence on CRLB with FDOA measurements collected by time, and random distribution of Ground Stations (GSs). We derived the performance by gauging the size of CRLB through Complementary Cumulative Distribution Function (CCDF). From the simulation results, broader distribution of GSs and FDOA measurements by longer time bring about better performance.

  • In this paper, we focus on establishing the MacWilliams-type identities on vectorial Boolean functions with bent component functions. As their applications, we provide a bound for the non-existence of vectorial dual-bent functions with prescribed minimum degree, and several Gleason-type theorems are presented as well.

  • This paper is on weighted model reduction using structurally balanced truncation. For a given weighted(single or double-sided) transfer function, a state space realization with the linear fractional transformation form is obtained. Then we prove that two block diagonal LMI(linear matrix inequality) solutions always exist, and it is possible to get a reduced order model with guaranteed stability and a priori error bound. Finally, two examples are used to show the validity of proposed weighted reduction method, and the method is compared with other existing methods.

  • We give an upper bound for the estimation of the difference between both sides of the well-known H$\ddot{o}$lder's inequality. Moreover, an upper bound for the estimation of the difference of the integral form of H$\ddot{o}$lder's inequality is also obtained. The results of this paper are natural generalizations and refinements of those of [2-4].

  • In this paper a robust hybrid control algorithm for n-link nonredundant robot manipulators is proposed. This scheme includes an estimation law for the upper bound on the uncertainty such that robust control input is updated as a function of the estimated upper bound. The uniform ultimate boundedness of the tracking error is generated by the Lyapunov based theory.

  • In this paper, an algorithm for stacking sequence optimization which deals with discrete ply angles is used for optimization of composite laminated plates. To handle discrete ply angles, the branch and bound method is modified. Numerical results show that the optimal stacking sequence is found with fewer evaluations of objective function than expected with the size of feasible region, which shows the algorithm can be effectively used for layup optimization of composite laminates..
