Multiphase lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) has been used to simulate the nucleate pool boiling directly. For the phase change model, the thermal model and the Stefan boundary condition were introduced to the isothermal LBM. The phase change model was validated by the bubble growth in a superheated liquid under no gravity. The bubble growth on and departure from a superheated wall has been simulated successfully. The preliminary results showed that the detail process of nucleate pool boiling was in good agreement with the experimental results.

An experimental parametric study of a tubular heat exchanger has been carried out far the saturated water at atmospheric pressure to determine effects of tube inclination on pool boiling heat transfer. For the analysis, seven inclination angles(0°, 15°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 75°, and 90°) and two tube diameters(12.7 and 19.1 mm) were tested. According to the results, inclination angles result in very much change on pool boiling heat transfer. As the inclination angle is around horizontal or vertical, maximum or minimum heat transfer is expected, respectively. For the same wall superheat(about 5.5K) the ratio between two heat fluxes fur $\theta$ =15° and 75° has the value of more than five when the tube diameter is 12.7 mm and heat flux is increasing.
A mechanistic model based on wall-attached bubble coalescence, previously developed by the authors, was extended to predict a vow high critical heat flux (CHF)in highly subcooled flow boiling, especially for high mass flux and small tube diameter conditions. In order to take into account the enhanced condensation due to high subcooling and high mass velocity in small diameter tubes, a mechanistic approach was adopted to evaluate the non-equilibrium flow quality and void fraction in the subcooled water flow boiling, with preserving the structure of the previous CHF model. Comparison of the model predictions against highly subcooled water CHF data showed relatively good agreement over a wide range of parameters. The significance of the proposed CHF model lies in its generality in applying over the entire subcooled flow boiling regime including the operating conditions of fission and fusion reactors.
A variety of Generation III/III+ water-cooled reactor designs featuring enhanced safety and improved economics are being proposed by nuclear power industries around the world in efforts to solve the future energy supply shortfall. Thermal-hydraulics is recognized as a key scientific subject in the development of innovative reactor systems. Phase change by boiling and condensation in the reverse process is a highly efficient heat transport mechanism that accommodates large heat fluxes with relatively small driving temperature differences. This mode of heat transfer is encountered in a wide spectrum of nuclear systems, and thus it is necessary to determine the thermal limit of water-cooled nuclear energy conversion in terms of economic and safety. Such applications are being advanced with the introduction of new technologies such as nanotechnology. Here, we investigated newly-introduced nanotechnologies relevant to boiling and condensation in general engineering applications. We also evaluated the potential linkage between such new advancements and nuclear applications in terms of advanced nuclear thermal-hydraulics.

Based on the bubble coalescence adjacent to the heated wall as a flow structure for CHF condition, Chang and Lee developed a mechanistic critical heat flux (CHF) model for subcooled flow boiling. In this paper, improvements of Chang-Lee model are implemented with more solid theoretical bases for subcooled and low-quality flow boiling in tubes. Nedderman-Shearer's equations for the skin friction factor and universal velocity profile models are employed. Slip effect of movable bubbly layer is implemented to improve the predictability of low mass flow. Also, mechanistic subcooled flow boiling model is used to predict the flow quality and void fraction. The performance of the present model is verified using the KAIST CHF database of water in uniformly heated tubes. It is found that the present model can give a satisfactory agreement with experimental data within less than 9% RMS error.

In this work, pool boiling heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) of five hydrocarbon refrigerants of propylene, propane, isobutane, butane and dimethylether (DME) were measured at the liquid temperature of $7^{\circ}C$ on a 26 fpi low fin tube, Turbo-B, and Thermoexcel-E tubes. All data were taken from 80 to $10kW/m^2$ in the decreasing order of heat flux. The data of hydrocarbon refrigerants showed a typical trend that nucleate boiling HTCs obtained on enhanced tubes also increase with the vapor pressure. Fluids with lower reduced pressure such as DME, isobutane, and butane took more advantage of the heat transfer enhancement mechanism of enhanced tubes than those enhancement ratios of $2.3\sim9.4$ among the tubes tested due to its sub-channels and re-entrant cavities.

The power cycle using ammonia-water mixture as a working fluid is a possible way to improve efficiency of the system of low-temperature source. In this work thermodynamic performance of the ammonia-water regenerative Rankine cycle with partial-boiling flow is analyzed for purpose of extracting maximum power from the source. Effects of the system parameters such as mass fraction of ammonia, turbine inlet pressure or ratio of partial-boiling flow on the system are parametrically investigated. Results show that the power output increases with the mass fraction of ammonia but has a maximum value with respect to the turbine inlet pressure, and is able to reach 22 kW per unit mass flow rate of source air at $180^{\circ}C$.
'Nanofluids' means suspension of common fluids with particles of the order of nanometers in size. The present research is an experimental study of critical heat flux (CHF) behavior in pool boiling of $water-TiO_2$ nanofluids under atmospheric pressure. CHF for pure water and $water-TiO_2$ nanofluids were respectively measured using disk-type copper block heater with 10mm diameter, and CHF of water with surfactant was also measured to consider the effect of surfactant used to disperse nanoparticle. The results show a large increase in CHF for $water-TiO_2$ nanofluids compared to pure water. After CHF occurred, heat flux in pool boiling for $water-TiO_2$ nanofluids was maintained in considerable value, but not for pure water.
The increasing heat generation rates in CPU of notebook computers motivate a research on cooling technologies with low thermal resistance. This paper develops a closed-loop two-phase cooling system using a micropump to circulate a dielectric liquid(PF5060). The cooling system consists of an evaporator containing a boiling enhancement microstructure connected to a condenser with mini fans providing external forced convection. The cooling system is characterized by a parametric study which determines the effects of volume fill ratio of coolant, existence of a boiling enhancement microstructure and pump flow rates on thermal performance of the closed loop. Experimental data shows the optimal parametric values which can dissipate 33.9W with a film heater maintained at $95^{\circ}C$.

The forced convective boiling heat transfer coefficients of R-407C were measured inside a horizontal tube 6.0mm I.D. and 4.0m long. The heat transfer coefficients increased according to an increase in heat flux at constant mass flux. Because nucleation was completely suppressed in the two-phase flow region with high quality, heat transfer coefficients in forced convective evaporation were higher than those in nucleate boiling region. Average heat transfer coefficients of R-407C were about 30 percent lower than the pure refrigerant correlation, due to mass transfer resistance at the gas-liquid interface. However, the total experimental data shows an agreement with the predicted data for ternary refrigerant mixtures with a mean deviation of 30%.
