  • A spike attached to a blunt nosed body significantly alters its flow field and influences the aerodynamic coefficients at hypersonic speed. The basic body is an axisymmetric, with a hemisphere nose followed by a cylindrical portion. Five different types of spikes, namely, conical aerospike, hemisphere aerospike, flat-face aerospike, hemisphere aerodisk and flat-face aerodisk are attached to the basic body in order to assess the aerodynamic characteristic. The spiked blunt body without the aerospike or aerodisk has been set to be a basic model. The coefficients of drag, lift and pitching moment were measured with and without blunt spike body for the length-to-diameter ratio (L/D) of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0, at Mach 6 and angle of attack up to 8 degrees using a strain gauge balance. The measured forces and moment data are employed to determine the relative performance of the aerodynamic with respect to the basic model. A maximum of 77 percent drag reduction was achieved with hemisphere aerospike of L/D = 2.0. The comparison of aerodynamic coefficients between the basic model and the spiked blunt body reveals that the aerodynamic drag and pitching moment coefficients decrease with increasing the L/D ratio and angle of attack but the lift coefficient has increasing characteristics.

  • The CSCM Upwind method and Material Transport Analysis(MTA) have been used to predict the thermal response and shape changes for charring/non-charring material which can be used as thermal protection material(TPM) on blunt-body nose tip. We performed intensive flight trajectory simulations to compare 1-D MTA results with those of 2-D/Axisymmetric MTA by using MTAs and Navier-Stokes code. Theheat-transfer rate and pressure distribution were predicted at selected altitudes and wall temperature along the flight trajectory and the shape changes of blunt-body nose tip were predicted subsequently by using current procedure.

  • The effect of nose radius on aerodynamic heating is investigated by using the Navier-Stokes code extended to thermochemical nonequilibrium airflow, Spherical blunt bodies, whose nose radius varies from 0.O03048 m to 0.6096 m, flying at Mach 25 at an altitude of 53.34 km are considered. Comparison of heat flux at stagnation point with the solution of Viscous Shock Layer and Fay-Riddell are made. Results show that the flow for very small radius is in a nearly frozen state, and therefore the heat flux due to diffusion is smaller than that due to translational energy. As the radius becomes larger, the portion of heat flux by diffusion becomes greater than that of heat flux by translational temperature and approaches to a constant value.

  • A finite-difference method based on conservative supra characteristic method(CSCM) type upwind flux difference splitting has been studied on the bluntness effect on the wall heat transfer rate and wall pressure over blunt-body. The results show that the stagnation heating varies inversely with the square root of the nose radius.

  • In this work, we introduce a newly constructed arc-jet device of 150 kW input power. The design of this device is a Huels type with a narrow downstream electrode. General features of this device are first described. From the measured values of electrical power input, heat discharged into cooling water, gas flow rate, and settling chamber pressure, average enthalpy was determined using the heat balance and sonic throat methods. Using the settling chamber pressure and average enthalpy values, the flow properties in the nozzle and the heat transfer rate to the stagnation point of a blunt body are calculated accounting for thermochemical nonequilibrium. The envelope of enthalpy, pressure, degree of dissociation, and heat transfer rate are presented. Stagnation temperature is predicted to be between 4630 to 6050 $^{\circ}K$, and the stagnation point heat transfer rate is predicted to be between 175 and 318 W/$cm^{2}$ for a blunt body of 3 mm nose radius. Degree of dissociation in the stagnation region of the blunt body exceeds 30%.

  • In this paper the upwind flux difference splitting Navier-Stokes method has been applied to study the perfect gas and the equilibrium chemically reacting hypersonic flow over an axisymmetric sphere-cone(5°) geometry. The effective gamma(γ), enthalpy to internal energy ratio was used to couple chemistry with the fluid mechanics for equilibrium chemically reacting air. The test case condition was at altitude(30km) and Mach number(15). The equilibrium shock thickness over the blunt body region was much thinner than that of perfect gas shock. The pressure difference between perfect gas and equilibrium gas was about 3 ∼ 5 percent. The heat transfer coefficient were also calculated. The results were compared with VSL results in order to validate the current numerical analysis. The results from current method were compared well VSL results ; however, not well at near nose. The proper boundary condition and grid system will be studied to improve the solution quality.

  • The effect of nose radius on aerodynamic heating are investigated by using the Wavier-Stokes code extended to thermochemical nonequilibrium airflow. A spherical blunt body, whose radius varies from 0.003048 m to 0.6096 m, flying at Mach 25 at an altitude of 53.34 km is considered. Comparison of heat flux at stagnation point with the solution of Viscous Shock Layer and Fay-Riddell are made. As the radius becomes larger, the portion of diffusion heat flux becomes greater than translational heat flux and approaches to a constant value.

  • When an axisymmetric body moves through air the boundary layer near the stagnation region remains laminar and subsequently it goes through transition to turbulent. The experimental investigation described in this paper concerns the characteristics of wall pressure fluctuations at the initial stage of boundary layer flow including transition. Flush-mounted microphones are used to measure the wall pressure fluctuations at the transition and turbulent boundary layer region of a blunt axisymmetric body in the low noise wind tunnel. It if found from this study that the wall pressure fluctuations in the transition region is higher than that in the turbulent region.
