Fluidized bed gasification is technically and economically proven technology, which shows the high possibility of realization and commercialization. However, in Korea, development of FBG to the commercial scale for power generation and industry is mainly blocked by the fact that there is no experience of design, troubleshooting and operation of even pilot scale fluidized bed gasifier. In this study, a $3MW_{th}$ circulating fluidized bed(CFB) was newly developed for biomass gasification. The fluidized bed was mainly composed of circulating and bubbling fluidized reactors integrating in-situ tar removal step in the system. For cleaning of the tar and acid gas in the product gas, the sequential gas cleaning process comprised of a ceramic filter, rapid quencher and wet scrubber was adopted. Effect of equivalence ratio was investigated to find the optimal operating conditions for the $3MW_{th}$ integrated system of fluidized bed gasification.
Recently, hydrogen production is attracting attention. In this study, a process simulation was conducted on the gasification reaction to produce hydrogen using rice husks, which are produced as by-products of rice. For this purpose, Chuchung, Odae, and Dongjin rice, which are rice varieties produced in Korea, were compared with the literature. The Korean rice contained more hydrogen and less oxygen compared to the literature. As a result of the simulation, large amounts of H2 and CH4 and small amounts of CO2 and CO were produced accordingly. The conditions to maximize hydrogen production were a gasification reaction temperature of 700℃ and an Steam-to-Biomass (S/B) ratio of 0.4-0.6. However, because the S/B ratio is related to the gasification catalyst degradation, the model needs to be improved through additional experiments in the future. This study showed the possibility of hydrogen production using Korean rice husks, which had not been reported.

Biomass and low-grade coals are known to be better potential sources of energy compared to crude oil and natural gas since these materials are readily available and found to have large reserves, respectively. Gasification of these carbonaceous materials produced syngas for chemical synthesis and power generation. Woodchip, sawdust and lignite were gasified with steam in a thermobalance reactor under atmospheric pressure in order to evaluate their kinetic rate information. The effects of gasification temperature ($600{\sim}900^{\circ}C$) and partial pressure of steam (20~90 kPa) on the gasification rate were investigated. The three different types of gas-solid reaction models were applied to the experimental data to predict the behavior of the gasification reactions. The modified volumetric model predicted the conversion data well, thus the model was used to evaluate kinetic parameters in this study. The observed activation energy of biomass, sawdust and lignite gasification reactions were found to be in reasonable range and their rank was found to be sawdust > woodchip > lignite. The expression of apparent reaction rates for steam gasification of the three solids was proposed to provide basic information on the design of coal gasification processes.
To reduce the hydrogen production cost through the utilizing the oxygen and improving the capacity factor of water electrolysis used to energy storage of renewable energy, the hybrid hydrogen production process which has dual operating concept of using the water electrolysis as energy storage and oxygen production process for biomass gasification was proposed. Moreover, Techno-economic analysis on this system was quantitatively performed.

Recently, latent heat thermal energy storage system (LHTES) has gained attention in order to utilize middle temperature (373~573 K) waste heat from biomass gasification. This paper has investigated thermo-physical properties of erythritol [$CH_2OHCHOH$$CHOHCH_2OH$], mannitol [$CH_2OH$$(CHOH)_4CH_2OH$] and their compounds as phase change materials (PCMs). The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was applied to measure the melting point and latent heat of these PCMs. Also the melting and solidification characteristics of these PCMs were observed in a glass tube with a digital camera. In the DSC measurement, when the amount of mannitol content was more than 40 mass%, the melting point of these compounds show two melting points. The experimental results showed that the velocity of melting and solidification were different for every mixture ratio of compounds. These compounds had the super-cooling phenomenon during the solidification process.
In view of stringent environment regulations to control the emission of green house gases and also depleting fossil fuel reserves, it is high quality desirable to develop alternative technologies to produce high quality fuels. To this end Biomass to Liquid (BTL) technology has received much attention in recent years. BTL process generally consists of gasification of biomass to produce bio-syngas, cleaning and control of $H_{2}/CO$ mole ratio of bio-syngas and Fischer-Tropsch synthesis & upgrading systems. Choren, Germany has first developed the commercial BTL process using unique gasification system i.e., Carbo-V. A new technology to remove tars and BTX has been developed by ECN in Netherlands employing a gasification system combined with OLGA technology. Several other countries including USA and Japan are showing great interest in BTL technology. Thus in view of our national energy security and also the environmental regulations, it is essential to develop alternative technologies like BTL in order to meet the increasing demand of energy though our insufficient biomass resources. In this paper we present an overview and development status of BTL-diesel technology.

Biomass gasification produces syngas or producer gas as low calorific fuel gas that can be used as a fuel for combustion or prime movers as well as chemical synthesis. Internal combustion engines are readily available with lower costs and easily used for producing distributed power using biomass syngas. In this study, a dual fuel diesel engine was used to evaluate its performance when biomass syngas is used for fuel. The engine was originally developed for biogas application with a diesel engine with a 2,607 cc displacement. Both diesel fuel and syngas consumptions were observed at the different load conditions. The results indicate that the dual fuel engine showed a reasonably good performance and up to 63 % of diesel fuel saving.
Lauan sawdust was gasified by steam reforming for hydrogen production from biomass waste. The fixed bed gasification reactor with 1m height and 10.2 cm diameter was utilized for the analysis of temperature and catalysts effect. Steam was injected to the gasification reactor for the steam reforming effect. Lauan sawdust was mixed with potassium carbonate, sodium carbonate, calcium carbonate, sodium carbonate + potassium carbonate and magnesium carbonate + calcium carbonate catalysts of constant mass fraction of 8:2 which was injected to the fixed gasification equipment. The compositions of production gas of gasification reaction were analyzed at the temperature range from $400^{\circ}C$ to $700^{\circ}C$. Fractions of hydrogen, methane and carbon monoxide gas in the production gas increased when catalysts were used. Fractions of hydrogen, methane and carbon monoxide gas were increased with increasing temperature. The highest hydrogen yield was obtained with sodium carbonate catalyst.

An experiment was conducted in order to investigate gasification characteristics of rice husks in a fixed bed, which was a pre-step to design a continuous gasification system. Two air supply levels for gasification were chosen and their effects on the producer gas amount and producer gas composition were discussed. The main components of the producer gas were CO, $CO_2$, $O_2$, $H_2$ and THC (Total HydroCarbon). As airflow rate decreased, more producer gas was produced. The peak amount of CO, $H_2$ and THC were 28%, 7.5% and 0.68% in volume when constant airflow rate of $3.36\;m^3/s$ was used in the batch operation. About 4.5 kg of ash (9%) and condensed water including tars of 6 kg (11%) were produced from 50 kg rice husks in the gasification. Excluding the byproducts, all rice husks seemed to be transformed into producer gas. This gasification study was conducted prior to developing a continuous gasification system for biomass including agricultural byproducts.
