The current study proposes a simple monodimensional model to estimate the linear growth rate of photosynthetic microorganisms in flat-plate photobioreactors (FPPBRs) during batch cultivation. As a model microorganism, Chlorella kessleri was cultivated photoautotrophically in FPPBRs using light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as the light sources to provide unidirectional irradiation in the photobioreactors. Various conditions were simulated by adjusting both the intensity of the light and the height of the culture. The validity of the proposed model was examined by comparing the linear growth rates measured with the predicted ones obtained from the proposed model. Accordingly, the value of $\frac{K\cdot\mu m}{\alpha\cdot L}log(I_0\cdot{I_s}^{\varepsilon 1)\cdot {I_c}^{-\varepsilon})$ was proposed as an approximate index for strategies to obtain the maximal lightn yield under light-limiting conditions for high-density algal cultures and as a control parameter to improve the photosynthetic productivity and efficiency.
The main goal of this study is to develop a multi-metric fishway assessment model (Mm-FA) and evaluate the efficiency of fishway. The Mm-FA model has three major fishway components with nine metrics: structural characteristics, hydraulic/hydrologic features, and biological attributes. The model was developed for diagnosing and assessing fishway efficiency and tested to Juksan Weir at the Yeongsan River Watershed. Structural characteristics of fishway included slope of the fishway (M1), ratios of fishway width to stream width (M2), and the proportion of orifice clogging and orifice size (M3). Hydraulic/hydrologic characteristics included depth of fishway entrance head (M4), depth of exit tail (M5), and current velocity of inner fishway (M6). Biological characteristics included fish species ratio of inner fishway to upper-lower weir (M7), fish length distribution (M8), and the proportion of migratory fish species to the total number of species (M9). Overall, the assessment of fishway efficiency showed the total score of the Mm-FA model was 25 in the Juksan Weir, indicating "good condition" by the criteria of the five-level classification system. The Mm-FA model may be used as a key tool for the assessment of fishway efficiency, especially on the 16 weirs constructed for the "Four Rivers Restoration Project" after a partial calibration of Mm-FA model.

plasma group velocities of neon with oxygen admixture (ug) are obtained by intensified charge coupled device (ICCD) camera images at fixed gate width time of 5 ns. The propagation velocities outside interelectrode region are in the order of 104 m/s.The plasma ambipolar diffusion velocities are calculated to be in the order of 102 m/s. Plasma jet is generated by all fixed sinusoidal power supply, total gas flow and repetition frequency at 3 kV, 800 sccm and 40 kHz, respectively. The amount of oxygen admixture is varied from 0 to 2.75 %. By employing one dimensional convective wave packet model, the electron temperatures in non-thermal atmospheric-pressure plasma jet are estimated to be in a range from 1.65 to 1.95 eV.

Neon and argon plasma group velocities (ug) are obtained by intensified charge coupled device (ICCD) camera images at fixed gate width time of 5 ns. The propagation velocities in upstream and downstream region are in the order of 104-105 m/s. The plasma ambipolar diffusion velocities are calculated to be in the order of 101-102 m/s. Plasma jet is generated by sinusoidal power supply in varying voltages from 1 to 4 kV at repetition frequency of 40 kHz. By employing one dimensional convective wave packet model, the neon and argon electron temperatures in non-thermal atmospheric-pressure plasma jet are estimated to be 1.95 and 1.18 eV, respectively.

In order to integrate heterogeneous biological information sources, it is necessary to define the view that represents unified viewpoint for the multiple sources by hiding heterogeneity of the data. We present an XML-based view definition model and show Its operating principles in designing the middleware system to integrate biological information sources. This model supports the user-defined XML view to increase flexibility in constructing the integration system and execute integrated queries on higher level ion. Based on the view-definition model, we present a wrapping model for relational database systems and web resources as well as an application program.
Hadron therapy, such as carbon and helium ions, is increasingly coming to the fore for the treatment of cancers. Such hadron therapy has several advantages over conventional radiotherapy using photons and electrons physically and clinically. These advantages are due to the different physical and biological characteristics of heavy ions including high linear energy transfer and Bragg peak, which lead to the reduced exit dose, lower normal tissue complication probability and the increased relative biological effectiveness (RBE). Despite the promising prospects on the carbon ion radiation therapy, it is in dispute with which bio-mathematical models to calculate the carbon ion RBE. The two most widely used models are local effect model and microdosimetric kinetic model, which are actively utilized in Europe and Japan respectively. Such selection on the RBE model is a crucial issue in that the dose prescription for planning differs according to the models. In this study, we aim to (i) introduce the concept of RBE, (ii) clarify the determinants of RBE, and (iii) compare the existing RBE models for carbon ion therapy.

Land use is a critical factor that affects the hydrological characteristics of watersheds, thereby determining the biological condition of streams. This study analyzes the effects of land uses in the watersheds on biological indicators of streams across the Han River basin using a linear model (LM) and generalized additive model (GAM). LULC and biological monitoring data of streams were obtained from the Korean Ministry of Environment. The proportions of urban, agricultural, and forest areas in the watersheds were regressed to the three biological indicators, including diatom, benthic macroinvertebrate, and fish of streams. The estimated LM and GAM models for the biological indicators were then compared, using regression determination R2 and AIC values. The results revealed that GAM models performed better than the LM models in explaining the variances of biological indicators of streams, indicating the non-linear relationships between biological indicators and land uses in watersheds. Also, the results suggested that the indicator of macroinvertebrates was the most sensitive indicator to land uses in watersheds. Although non-linear relationships between watershed land uses and biological indicators of streams could vary among biological indicators, it was consistent that streams' biological integrity significantly deteriorated by a relatively low percentage of urban areas. Meanwhile, biological indicators of streams were negatively affected by the relatively high percentage of agricultural areas. The results of this study can be integrated into effective quantitative criteria for the watershed management and land use plans to enhance the biological integrity of streams. In specific, land uses management plans in watersheds may need more close attention to urban land use changes than agricultural land uses to sustain the biological integrity of streams.

Membranes are a central feature of all biological systems and their ability to control many cellular processes is critically important. As a result, a better understanding of how molecules bind to biological membranes is an active area of research. In this report, the interaction between our biomimetic structures and different biological membranes is reported using both model vesicle and in vitro bacterial cell experiments. These results show that lipid composition is more important for selectivity than overall net charge. An effort is made to connect model vesicle studies with in vitro data and naturally occurring lipid compositions.
Biological rhythms are very important phenomena to generate, grow a living thing. However, the origin of rhythms are not disclosed completely until now. Eack myocardial cell has a natural rhythm of itself, and synchronization is happened when two cells are come in contact with each other. In this research, a simple synchronization model has been proposed and studied, refering to the physiological model. The changes of the synchronization rhythms in experimental results are compared with that of the model.
Dose response curves using absorbed dose to the biological effect are usually available in case of conventional X beam. However, absorbed dose is not consider in treatment planning for carbon beam such as heavy ions. Because the biological effects also depend on other quantities such as the local variation, which is often characterized by the linear energy transfer (LET). So LQ model cannot explain the entire response of fractionated carbon beam irradiation. The variation in LET with penetration depth leads to substantial differences in biological effect of carbon beam. And it is therefore essential in treatment planning to calculate not only the absorbed dose but also the LET to estimate the biological outcome of the radiation of interest. LET variation plays an important role in the fractionated irradiations. It is suggested that consideration of LET is necessary in biophysical model.
