  • This study was to suggest the method for wrinkle improvement using Mugil cephalus extract. In order to evaluate the cosmetic product made of M. cephalus extract, the experiments were conducted with subjects and skin states for 4 weeks. Effect of cosmetics containing M. cephalus extract on the water holding capacity and evaporation of the women skin were investigated. The water holding capacity was increased after 1 h of application. But after 2 h, it was decreased. In the case of the water evaporation, it was increased with the increase of time. On the clinical trial, it was also found that water, oil, and rough level on the women skin were increased and wrinkles were improved. Side effects were also not detected during the application and treatment of cosmetics. Based on this result, the application of M. cephalus extract had positive effects on the improvement of wrinkles and skin in women. Therefore, it will be used to develop the wrinkle improvement therapy for women.

  • This study aimed to examine the treatment effect of Muraenesox cinereus extract product combined with high frequency on men's damaged skin. The subjects were treated by a product containing M. cinereus extract combined with high frequency therapy for six weeks and tested in skin condition. First, for moisture level change, there was no significant difference between the control group treated only by high frequency therapy and the experimental group treated by a M. cinereus extract product combined with high frequency therapy. But the subjects who increased consistently in moisture level in the cheek and chin were more common in the experimental group. Second, for an oil level, prominently high increase was found in both the control group and the experimental group. Finally, for a rough level, while there was little difference in the control group between immediately after peeling and after six weeks, high improvement effect on a curve was found in the experimental group. Based on this result, cosmetics using M. cinereus extract may have a positive effect on men's skin which is exposed to several stress factors. Accordingly, this result will contribute to developing men's functional cosmetics.

  • The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of the induced heat stress on physiological response and serum biochemical parameters involving glucose, cholesterol, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), and cortisol in Holstein calves. Ten calves were kept in a climate controlled room (air temperature $37^{\circ}C$ and 90% humidity from 09:00 to 19:00) for three days. Those animals were given a one-day adaptation period. During the treatment period, we measured the skin temperature six times. Following the treatment periods, blood samples were collected before the experiment began (09:00) and at the end of the stress period (19:00). To aid analysis of the biochemical parameters, also we monitored the rectal temperature. The results, exhibited that both rectal and skin temperature showed increase in the heat stress-induced animals as compared with unstressed animals. Moreover, we noticed that the levels of BUN and NEFA increased in the blood serum of heat stress induced animals when compared with un-stressed ones. From these results, we concluded that the physiological and biochemical changes in the calves were induced by heat stress. Hence, the present study findings could be employed as base line data for development of stress reduction techniques in the dairy industry.

  • Recently seaweed polysaccharides have been extensively studied for alternative energy application. Because their producing cost is high and efficiency low, their industrial applications have been limited. The main component of cell wall of red algae represented by Gelidiales and Gracilariales is agar. Red-algae agar or galactan, consisting of D-galactose and 3, 6-anhydro-L-galactose, is suitable for bio-product application if hydrolyzed to monomer unit. For the hydrolysis of algae, chemical or enzymatic treatment can be used. A chemical process using a strong acid is simple and efficient, but it generates together with target sugar and toxic compounds. In an enzymatic hydrolysis process, target sugar without toxic compounds generation. The objective of this review is to summary the recent data of saccharification by chemical and enzymatic means from red seaweed for especially focused on automobile industry.

  • Cultivation of Spirulina platensis using ammonium salts or wastewater containing ammonium as alternative nitrogen sources is considered as a commercial way to reduce the production cost. In this research, by analyzing the relationship between biomass production and ammonium-N consumption in the fed-batch culture of Spirulina platensis using ammonium bicarbonate as a nitrogen nutrient source, an online adaptive control strategy based on optical density (OD) measurements for controlling ammonium feeding was presented. The ammonium concentration was successfully controlled between the cell growth inhibitory and limiting concentrations using this OD-based feedback feeding method. As a result, the maximum biomass concentration (2.98 g/l), productivity (0.237 g/l d), nitrogen-to-cell conversion factor (7.32 gX/gN), and contents of protein (64.1%) and chlorophyll (13.4mg/g) obtained by using the OD-based feedback feeding method were higher than those using the constant and variable feeding methods. The OD-based feedback feeding method could be recognized as an applicable way to control ammonium feeding and a benefit for Spirulina platensis cultivations.

  • To assess a polential relationship of Korean ginseng to allergic reactions, the effect of Korean ginseng on the total IgE in serum as an allergologic parameter was investigated in humans. Serum total IgE levels were measured in 8 subjects who have been taking ginseng for more than 5 years, 4 subjects of weak constitution, 10 newly hired workers in the ginseng processing industry and 7 normal subjects unexposed to Korean ginseng as control group. Blood samples were taken before and after the exposure to Korean ginseng. Total IgE levels after the exposure to Korean ginseng were not significantly different from those before the exposure within each group. And also, the IgE levels of control subjects were not significantly different compared with those of other groups. These results suggest that the exposure to Korean ginseng dose not affect significantly the IgE immune response of the subjects.

  • In recombinant strains, many proteins and enzymes are expressed as inactive and insoluble inclusion bodies. For soluble expression of an active form of StyB, an NADH-flavin oxidoreductase, several recombinant Escherichia coli strains were developed and tested. Among them, strain BL21(DE3)pLysS effectively produced an active and soluble form of StyB as about 9% of the total protein content, when cultivated at $20^{\circ}C$ with 0.5 mM IPTG. The solubly expressed StyB has the highest oxidoreductase activity at pH 6.5-7.5 and $37^{\circ}C$. Substrate dependence profiles of the StyB-catalyzed reaction showed that the maximum specific activity($V_m$) and half saturation constant($K_m$) were $1,867{\pm}148\;U/mg$ protein and $51.6{\pm}11{\mu}M$ for NADH, and $1,274{\pm}34\;U/mg$ protein and $8.2{\pm}1.2{\mu}M$ for FAD, respectively. This indicates that solubly produced StyB has 6- to 9-fold higher oxidoreductase activities than the in vitro refolded StyB from inclusion bodies.
