Nano Electrocatalysis for Fuel Cells

  • For both oxygen reduction (ORR) and hydrogen oxidation reactions (HOR) of proton electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), alloying Pt with another transition metal usually results in a higher activity relative to pure Pt, mainly due to electronic modification of Pt and bifunctional behaviour of alloy surface for ORR and HOR, respectively. However, activity and stability are closely related to the preparation of alloy nanoparticles. Preparation conditions of alloy nanoparticles have strong influence on surface composition, oxidation state, nanoparticle size, shape, and contamination, which result from a large difference in redox priority of metal precursors, intrinsic properties of metals, increasedreactivity of nanocrystallites, and interactions with constituents for the synthesis such as solvent, stabilizer, and reducing agent, etc. Carbon-supported Pt-Ni alloy nanoparticles were prepared by the borohydride reduction method in anhydrous solvent. Pt-Ru alloy nanoparticles supported on carbon black were also prepared by the similar synthetic method to that of Pt-Ni. Since electrocatalytic reactions are strongly dependent on the surface structure of metal catalysts, the atom-leveled design of the surface structure plays a significant role in a high catalytic activity and the utilization of electrocatalysts. Therefore, surface-modified electrocatalysts have attracted much attention due to their unique structure and new electronic and electrocatalytic properties. The carbon-supported Au and Pd nanoparticles were adapted as the substrate and the successive reduction process was used for depositing Pt and PtM (M=Ru, Pd, and Rh) bimetallic elements on the surface of Au and Pd nanoparticles. Distinct features of the overlayers for electrocatalytic activities including methanol oxidation, formic acid oxidation, and oxygen reduction were investigated.

해상가두리 양식장에서 배합사료 및 생사료 투여에 의한 조피볼락, Sebastes schlegeli 건강도 (Comparative Health Extents of Korean Rockfish, Sebastes Schlegeli by the Commercial extruded Pellet and Moisture Pellet Administration)

  • The purpose of this research is to evaluate the effects of a commercial mixed extruded pellet(EP) and raw fish moist pellet(MP) diet on diseases prevalence and serological constituents and HSI of korean rockfish, Sebastes schlegeli grown in two commercial-scale aquaculture farms from June to December in 2009. The growth of MP-fed rockfish was slightly faster than EP-fed rockfish during experimental period, but did not show significant differences. The levels of TCHO, TG, Glucose and TP in the MP-fed rockfish group were higher than those of EP-fed group, whereas there was no significant difference in other biochemical factors of blood between two groups. In addition, bacteria and virus were not detected in both MP- and EP-fed rockfish groups, and the infection rates of gill fluke between two groups did not show clear difference. In conclusion, there was no comparable difference in growth and the health extents of one year rockfish by administration of the commercial mixed extruded pellet(EP) and raw fish moist pellet(MP) diets.

  • 본 연구에서는 QUAL2E 모형의 계산구간을 유입지점마다 분할하여 정하고, 계산에 피룡한 수문인자들 및 수질자료를 가능한한 실측치나 또는 직접계산치로 사용했다. 대상하천은 미국 Clorado 주의 South Platte 강을 선정하고, 수질항목 용존산소(DO)와 생물학적 산소요구량(CBOD5)에 대하여 1991년 9월과 1992년 1월 자료를 사용하여 계산하고 관측치와 비교한바, DO는 5%이내, CBOD5는 20% 정도에서 잘 일치하였다. 수질예측결과에 의하면 2001년에는 대상하천의 수질이 미환경청 기준으로 4등급수에 해당되는 것으로 나타났다.

  • Phenol and other phenolic compounds are common constituents of aqueous effluents from processes such as polymeric resin production, oil refining and cokeing plants. Phenol is a both toxic and lethal of fish at relatively low concentrations e.g. 5-25 mg/L and imparts objectionable tastes to drinking water at far lower concentration. Therefore, the treatment of phenol effluent is important. Among the various techniques of phenol wastewater treatment, microbial teratment is a popular process. The breakdown of phenols by microorganisms has recived considerable attention, because of its biochemical interest and its industrial importance in effluent treatment. This research was performed to investigate the dynamics of microbial community, biofilm growth and the comparison of phenol removal efficiency by RBC (Rotating Biological Contactor) using Rhodococcus sp. EL-GT The experiment was carried out at rotating speed of 10ppm and hydraulic retention time of 7 hours. As time passed, phenol removal efficiency was gained highly. The RBC using Rhodococcus sp. EL-GT completely degraded 15 mM.

Energy Metabolism and Protein Utilization in Chicken- A Review

  • Evaluation of energy in the diet is very important in animal nutrition because food intake is strongly influenced by the energy content of the diet. This means that the intake of other nutrients, such as amino acids, is affected by their ratio to energy content. Poultry can control their energy intake over a range of energy: protein ratios. Energy: protein ratio also affects the growth and body composition. Therefore we need to know what extent the relationship between energy and dietary protein influences the bird's performance. To predict the energy value of the diet or its chemical constituents, researchers have been working on modelling using the equations of the major biochemical pathways in terms of ATP generation and utilization. The activity of feeding and the metabolism caused by digestion and assimilation of food increase the animal's heat production and it can be measured by calorimetry technique. Theoretically, surplus amino acids which are not needed for protein synthesis stimulate an additional increase in metabolic rate and lead to increased energetic costs of catabolism and excretion. However, it has sometimes been shown that there was no measurable diet-induced thermoregulatory effect when an imbalanced amino acid mixture was fed. All these aspects are discussed in this review.

Effect of Feeding High Glucosinolate Rapeseed Meal to Laying Japanese Quail

  • The laying performance of Japanese quails fed graded levels of high glucosinolate ($92.5{\mu}mole/g$) rapeseed meal (RSM) was assessed. One hundred and twenty Japanese quails aged 1 day-old were assigned at random to four dietary treatments consisting of 0, 50, 75 or 100 g/kg RSM in the diet replacing part of the soybean meal and de-oiled rice bran in a standard quail ration. 12 female representative quails from each diet were selected at random and housed in individual cages from 7-20 wk of age. The egg production, feed intake and FCR was comparable among the different dietary groups. The egg quality characteristics, organoleptic evaluation of boiled eggs as well as the haematological (haemoglobin, total erythrocyte count, total leucocyte count) and biochemical (glucose, protein, cholesterol, aspartate amino transferase, alanine amino transferase and alkaline phosphatase) constituents did not differ significantly among the groups. The gross and histopathological studies of vital organs did not reveal any appreciable changes. The feed cost was reduced by the incorporation of RSM in the diet, but only the production cost of quails fed the 75 g/kg RSM was lower in comparison to other groups. In the present study, the laying potential of Japanese quail was well-maintained up to the 100g/kg dietary level of rapeseed meal.

Hepatoprotective and free radical scavenging activities of Lagerstroemia speciosa Linn. leaf extract

  • The present study deals with the amelioration by Lagerstroemia speciosa Linn. leaf extract against hepatotoxicity induced by carbon tetrachloride ($CCl_4$), which was evaluated in terms of serum marker enzymes like serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase, serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase, alkaline phosphatase, serum total bilirubin, total protein levels along with concomitant hepatic and antioxidants like superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione, glutathione peroxidase and lipid peroxidation enzymes were monitored. These biochemical parameters altered by the single dose level of $CCl_4$ (0.75 ml/kg body weight, i.p). Pre treatment with L. speciosa prior to the administration of $CCl_4$, at the doses of 50 and 250 mg/kg. body weight/day, p.o. for 7 days, significantly restored all the serum and liver tissue parameters near to the normal levels, respectively. Silymarin was used as a reference standard, prior to the administration of $CCl_4$ to rats. These findings indicate the protective potential of L. speciosa against hepato toxicity which possibly involve mechanism related to its ability of selective inhibitors of (reactive oxygen species like antioxidants brought about significant inhibition of TBARS suggesting possible involvement of $O_2{\cdot}-$, $HO_2{\cdot}$, and ${\cdot}OH$. In conclusion, the amelioration may be attributed to the synergistic effects of its constituents rather than to any single factor as the leaves are rich in tannins, sterols, flavonoids, saponins etc.

EFFECT OF KOREAN BLACK SOYBEAN SEED ON THE CELLULAR PROLIFERATION AND THE PRODUCTION OF TYPE 111 COLLAGEN IN SKIN FIBROBLAST

  • Soybeans are one of the major crops for human food resource; protein, lipid, and carbohydrate. In these days, they are widely using for cosmetics to supply phospholipid; natural surfactant. In this study we used black soybean seed in korea and observed many kinds of biochemical constituents; isoflavone, melatonin, crisantemine and calcium in ethanol extract. Also, its extract (we named it Flatonin) has been demonstrated that korean black soybean seed is able to stimulate the proliferation of NIH 373 cells and increase the production of type III collagen in NIH 373 and Malme-3 (human skin fibroblast) cells. The addition of korean black soybean to quiescent NIH 373 cells resulted in an increase of proliferation which was assayed by MTF method. The maximum effect of korean black soybean was detected in 0.4% korean black soybean treated cells which was comparable to that of 5% serum(96% of 5% serum effect). The addition of korean black soybean to NIH 373 and Malme-3 cells also increased the production of type III collagen in both cells. These results indicate that korean black soybean may enhance the repair process after injury and prevent aging processes in connective tissues.

  • Functional photoacoustic tomography is a new non-invasive imaging modality, and it is emerging as a very practical method for imaging biological tissue structures by means of laser-induced ultrasound. Structures with high optical absorption, such as blood vessels, can be imaged with the spatial resolution of ultrasound, which is not limited by the strong light scattering in biological tissues. By varying wavelengths of the laser light and acquiring photoacoustic images, optical absorption spectrum of each image pixel is found. Since the biochemical constituents of tissues determine the spectrum, useful functional information like oxygen saturation ($SO_2$) and total haemoglobin concentration (HbT) can be extracted. In this study, as a proof-of-principle experiment, hypoxic brain tumor vasculature and traumatic brain injury (TBI) of small animal brain are imaged with functional photoacoustic tomography. High resolution brain vasculature images of oxygen saturation and total hemoglobin concentration are provided to visualize hypoxic tumor vasculature, and hemorrhage on the cortex surface by the TBI.

생약으로부터 In vitro DNA 결합활성의 검색 (Screening of In vitro DNA-binding Activity from the Crude Drugs)

  • One hundred and seventeen crude drugs were screened for DNA-binding activity in vitro. The DNA-methyl green assay is a useful biochemical screen for the detection or development of biologically active compounds which bind to DNA. This assay is based upon the fact that free methyl green undergoes rapid spontaneous molecular rearrangement to its colorless carbinol base so that the liberation of the dye from DNA by displacement can be followed spectrophotometrically as a decrease in absorbance at 65Onm. Seven methanolic extracts of crude drugs including Cinnamomi Cortex spissus, Coicis Semen, Coptidis Rhizoma, Perillae Semen, Plantaginis Semen, Polygalae Radix and Zanthoxyli Fructus showed less than 2,000${\mu}$g/ml as their $IC_{50}$ values. The active principles of Plantaginis Semen and Zanthoxyli Fructus were transferred into organic solvents, which showed the $IC_{50}$ values with 588 and 574${\mu}$g/ml, respectively. These fractions have been selected for isolation of biologically active constituents.
