BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Sargassum horneri is an edible brown alga that grows in the subtidal zone as an annual species along the coasts of South Korea, China, and Japan. Recently, an extreme amount of S. horneri moved into the coasts of Jeju Island from the east coast of China, which made huge economic and environmental loss to the Jeju Island. Thus, utilization of this biomass becomes a big issue with the local authorities. Therefore, the present study was performed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory potential of crude polysaccharides (CPs) extracted from S. horneri China strain in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. MATERIALS/METHODS: CPs were precipitated from S. horneri digests prepared by enzyme assistant extraction using four food-grade enzymes (AMG, Celluclast, Viscozyme, and Alcalase). The production levels of nitric oxide (NO) and pro-inflammatory cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-${\alpha}$ and interleukin (IL)-$1{\beta}$ were measured by Griess assay and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, respectively. The levels of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), nuclear factor (NF)-${\kappa}B$, and mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) were measured by using western blot. The IR spectrums of the CPs were recorded using a fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) spectrometer. RESULTS: The polysaccharides from the Celluclast enzyme digest (CCP) showed the highest inhibition of NO production in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells ($IC_{50}$ value: $95.7{\mu}g/mL$). Also, CCP dose-dependently down-regulated the protein expression levels of iNOS and COX-2 as well as the production of inflammatory cytokines, including TNF-${\alpha}$ and IL-$1{\beta}$, compared to the only LPS-treated cells. In addition, CCP inhibited the activation of NF-${\kappa}B$ p50 and p65 and the phosphorylation of MAPKs, including p38 and extracellular signal-regulated kinase, in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. Furthermore, FT-IR analysis showed that the FT-IR spectrum of CCP is similar to that of commercial fucoidan. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that CCP has anti-inflammatory activities and is a potential candidate for the formulation of a functional food ingredient or/and drug to treat inflammatory diseases.
To exploit plant growth promoting bacteria in the roots of Miscanthus sacchariflorus, a biomass energy crop, total 64 bacteria were isolated. For the investigation of plant growth promoting effects from the isolated bacteria, production of indole acetic acid (IAA) and 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) deaminase activities were tested and other cultural conditions were examined. As results, 8 isolates showed plant growth promoting effects on the M. sacchariflorus and an isolate designated Agrobacterium sp. BE516 has the highest activity by enhancing the shoot elongation over 2-fold than the control. Agrobacterium sp. BE516 produced 64 ${\mu}g$ IAA per mL and showed ACC deaminase activity which is involved in the resistance to environmental stress such as high salt and drought. It could grow at low temperature in the range from 4 to $15^{\circ}C$, at pH 4.0 and at 4% NaCl. These results indicate that the Agrobacterium sp. BE516 can be useful as a bio-fertilizer for M. sacchariflorus under the stressed conditions.
The present study was conducted to investigate effective starter culture to improve biological activity of Asarum sieboldii. Antibacterial activity, antioxidant activity and reduction of enteric rumen methane production were used as criterions for biological activity. Ground A. sieboldii was added in MRS broth at 10% (w/v) and fermented by different starter cultures. Weissella confusa NJ28, Weissella cibaria NJ33, Lactobacillus curvatus NJ40, Lactobacillus brevis NJ42, Lactobacillus plantarum NJ45 and Lactobacillus sakei NJ48 were used for starter culture strains. Each starter culture was inoculated with 1% (v/v) ratio and fermentation was performed at $30^{\circ}C$ with agitation (150 rpm) for 48 h. MRS broth for the control was employed without starter culture. Then the fermentation growth was dried and extracted using ethyl alcohol. The growth of starter culture was detected at NJ40, NJ42, NJ45 and NJ48. And the highest cell growth was found in NJ40. Antibacterial activity against to Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogens, Mannheimia haemolytica and Salmonella gallinarum were observed in the extract fermented by NJ40 and NJ45. All treatments showed antioxidant activities, however, there were no significant differences (p>0.05). In in vitro rumen fermentation, negative control (NC) and positive control (PC) were assigned to without extract and with non-fermented A. sieboldii extract. Significant suppression of gas productions were detected in positive control and treatments compared to negative control (p<0.05). However, total volatile fatty acid production was not suppressed. Significant methane reduction per total volatile fatty acid productions were found in positive control and NJ45 treatment (p<0.05). The present study suggested a fermentation of A. sieboldii using NJ45 strain could improve its biological activity and make possible for its use in bio additive for enteric rumen methane mitigation without suppression of animal productivity.

This study aimed to determine the effects of floral fragrances on human brain waves and moods. A total of 44 subjects participated in this experiment. Group 1 consisted of 11 male and 14 female college students with a mean age of 24.5 years (${\pm}2.23$) and Group 2 consisted of 10 males and 9 females with a mean age of 54.3 years (${\pm}2.98$). Subjects were exposed to floral fragrances of Rosa hybrida, 'Hera' (hereafter referred to as "rose"), Cymbidium faberi (hereafter referred to as "orchid"), or odorless control flowers (hereafter referred to as "control"). Experiments took place in three rooms (rose, orchid, and control). Electroencephalographs (EEGs) were recorded during exposure to the odors and the data were processed using quantitative electroencephalographic (QEEG) techniques. The changing EEG patterns were analyzed by brain mapping and compressed spectral arrays, and the subjects' preferences (hedonic evaluations) were quantified with an A1 index. Increased activation of absolute alpha waves was verified on six of the eight EEG channels, with the right frontal and left occipital lobes exhibiting no changes and the left parietal region showing the greatest activation. According to the QEEG measurements in the electrode sites over the frontal, temporal, parietal, and occipital lobes, the strongest absolute alpha waves were induced in the parietal lobes, followed by the temporal lobes, with the other lobes showing no significant changes. On brain maps, the orchid fragrance induced greater absolute alpha and absolute mid-beta activities compared with the rose and control fragrances, and the rose fragrance induced high absolute mid-beta activation. To identify emotional responses to floral fragrances, the subjects were requested to fill in a questionnaire and the resulting odor-related emotional descriptors were analyzed using semantic differential and factor analysis. Principal component analysis identified "elegant" as the first principal component describing the floral fragrance, followed by "refreshing" and "aromatic." The subjects gave orchid higher scores for "elegant" and "refreshing," while finding rose more "aromatic." Differences in hedonic evaluation revealed by the A1 index appeared in the 65-115 sec range of scent exposure time. The subjects with ages of around 50 years showed olfactory preferences throughout the entire experimental time of 160 sec, most markedly in the later time segment (115-165 sec), showing an increasing preference with increasing exposure time. We conclude that rose fragrance can improve concentration by creating an aromatic environment conducive to a concentrated and calm state of mind, and orchid fragrance can make people feel pampered and relaxed by creating an elegant and refreshing environment.
Twenty one strains strongly producing protease were isolated from Korean traditional Cheonggukjang. Eight strains selected by sensory evaluation on Cheonggukjang prepared with isolated strains were identified with based on biochemical properties a and 16S rDNA sequencing. Identified strains were Bacillus subtilis MB4, and Bacillus amyloliquefaciens A1, A2, B1, MC1, SB2, SC1, and SD1. Protease activities, important strain selection factor, were higher in Cheongjukjang prepared with B. subtilis MB4 (179.6 Unit) and B. amyloliquefaciens SB2 (201.9 Unit) than commercial traditional Cheonggukjang (97.9 Unit). Sensory evaluation revealed Cheonggukjang prepared with B. subtilis MB4 had flavor very similar to commercial traditional Cheonggukjang. Cheonggukjang prepared with B. suhtilis MB4 (0.0006 Pa s) and commercial traditional Cheonggukjang (0.0002 Pa s) revealed lower viscosities than those of Cheonggukjang prepared with B. amyloliquefaciens SB2, MC1, B1, A1, SD1, A2, and SC1 (0.006 to 0.008 Pa s at 1001/s. Results show Cheonggukjang could be prepared using single strain of B. subtilis MB4, maintaining high protease activity and very similar sensory and viscosity qualities with those of commercial traditional Cheonggukjang.

The maximum value of extracted total phenolics was 16.72 mg%, the optimal condition for electron donating ability was $93.35^{\circ}C$, 3.22 hr and 10.38%. The optimal conditions for pH 1.2 and 3.0 nitrite-scavenging ability was extract temperature of $79.77^{\circ}C$ and $76.46^{\circ}C$, extract time of 3.22 hr and 3.31 hr, and the ethanol concentration of 10.38% and 1.12%, respectively. With this optimal condition, the obtained maximum values for nitrite-scavenging activities at pH 1.2 and 3.0 were 94.85% and 63.22%, respectively.
The regional innovation policies so far have been separated from the social problems facing the local communities. The regional innovation policies, regarding the region as the location of the business, have focused on the invigoration of business innovation activities. However, as the recent emergence of the new paradigm of innovation policy aiming the sustainability, 'transformative innovation policy,' has led to a search for regional innovation policies that begin with solving the local social problems. This research paper deals with regional innovation theory that starts from searching for solutions and system transformation for social problems such as climate crisis and energy problems. The objective is to present a new framework called 'transformative regional innovation policy' and to improve its content through case studies by combining the results of the transformative innovation policy and the regional innovation policy studies. In particular, the contribution of this paper is to analyze and discuss the concept of the transition platform, which aims to solve the local social problems, through the case studies of Gussing, Austria and Esbjerg, Denmark. Lastly, it discusses the derived implications of the cases applied in Korean society.
The optimum condition for phenolics contents extraction from purple sweet potato was 12 hrs. in 50% ethanol. The electron donating scavenging activities (DPPH), ABTS radical cation decolorization (ABTS) and antioxidant protection factor (PF) of Jami, Yeonjami and Shinjami were higher than general sweet potato, and thiobarbituric acid reaction substance (TBARs) was below 30%. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli on skin were each 5,000 and 2,500 ppm in all purple sweet potatoes, and MIC of Jami was the lowest as 2,500 ppm against Staphlococcus epidermidis. The whitening (tyrosinase inhibitory) activity of purple sweet potatoes was the highest as 62.5% and 48.7% in Jami water and ethanol extracts. The anti-inflammation (hyaluronidase inhibitory) activity of purple sweet potatoes was the highest as 25.3% and 94.4% in Jami water and ethanol extracts. The safety of cosmetic with Jam; extracts was assessed by various safety profiles. pH and viscosity change of essence for 90 days was not detected. Cosmetic was stable to temperature and light for 90 days. The result to measure changes of skin color and pore size of the skin was that an aged skin was more effective than young skin.
The crab, Macrophthalmus (Mareotis ) japonicus , collected in 1983 from CHojijin tidal flat, southeastern part of Kangwha Island , Korea, was studied. Its caraace breadth, the carapace length , and body height were checked , and the measured raw data were analysed for the growth ratios by the mode subtraction method from the frequency distribution compared with the probability graphs. The growth rate of the crab rose more in summer than in fall and exceeded 10% during the same period on Chojijin tidal flat in Kangwha Island , Korea. Four size groups of the crab appeared in June, 1983 , but they were put together into only on emixed group by autumn. The rapid growth of the crab in summer in middle latitude comes from the seasonal bio-rhythm and the best conditions for food. But the physiological activities of the crab are reduced from autumn and the growth rate reaches the upper limits in many individuals on this tidal flat. The more the crabs grow, the more the breadth ratios to the carapac length become larger and the slopes of correlation curve get smaller. The measured values from the carapace breadth of the crab are more useful for morphological studies than those values from the carapace length or body height.
Large-scale preparation steps of antithrombotic materials from wood ear mushroom (Auricularia auricular-judae) were established as follows. Grounded dry wood ear mushroom was extracted with 75% ethanol and its precipitate was extracted with $76^{\circ}C$ water for 2 hr followed by filter pressing. The filtrate was then concentrated by vacuum and extracted with 80% ethanol, and the resulting precipitate was then freeze-dried. The formula of the product was determined using consumer susceptibility tests as follows; mushroom extract 90.5%, high fructose corn syrup 2.0%, $\beta$-cyclodextrin 1.5%, fructo-oligosaccharide 2.0%, pear puree 4.0%. When the packed products were stored at 25, 37, or $45^{\circ}C$ for 8 weeks, there were no noticeable changes in water activity, moisture content, pH, and acidity. The viable cell number of total bacteria was slightly increased during the storage period at 25 and $37^{\circ}C$, The total bacteria were not detected in the product when stored at $45^{\circ}C$. When the product was injected intravenously into rat at the level of 1,000 mg/kg, antithrombotic activities such as activated partial thromboplastin time, thrombin time, prothrombin time, and FIB were increased when compared with the control group. When the product was administrated orally into rat at the level of 500 mg/kg, it showed the same antiplatelet activity to aspirin.
