  • This study aims to analyze the accidents of green mode bicycle. In pursuing the above, this study gave special emphasis on modeling the bicycle accidents reflecting the regional characteristics. The main results are as follows. First, the null hypotheses that the number of accident and ratio of serious injury and fatality (FSI) were the same over regions were rejected. Second, as the common variables, the number of bicycle was judged to have positive (+) impact to the accidents and the bicycle using ratio was inferred to increase the ratio of FSI. Third, the elderly population ratio among 3 factors which gave impact to the accidents of Si_A (city-county consolidation) was concluded to have the greatest elasticity. The developed area ratio between 2 factors in Si_B (city which is not consolidated) was, however, estimated to have the higher elasticity. Fourth, the number of car registration among 5 accident factors of Gun (county) was analyzed to have the greatest elasticity. Finally, the commuting trip ratio among 7 accident factors of Gu (district) was judged to have the greatest elasticity. This study can be expected to give some implications to regional policy-making related to bicycle.

  • According to the prosecutors' office's statistics for 2014, 53% of a bicycle users have experienced theft. The reason for the high rate of bicycle stolen in Korea is that there is no bicycle management system. This is because they do not use bicycle numbers to manage bikes like cars do. Most people do not know if they have a VIN(Vehicle Identification Number) on their bike. If the buyer registers the bicycle in the bicycle management blockchain system, anyone can view the information registered in the chain, so that if the bicycle number is filled in, the bicycle can be identified. In addition, when an accident occurs, blockchain will record what kind of equipment it is replacing, like an automobile, to manage all the information about the bicycle. In this way, consumers can inquire whether they have a history of accident when they make a second-hand transaction. In this paper, we propose a method to construct bicycle management system using bicycle VIN.

  • According to the promoting policy for bicycle riding, the bicycle road infrastructure in Korea has been widely established. As the number of bicycle rider increases, bicycle traffic accidents also increase year after year. In this paper, we analyze bicycle traffic accident data from 2007 to 2014 which is provided by Road Traffic Authority and present statistical results of bicycle traffic accidents. And also regression analysis is applied to predict the number of daily traffic accidents in Seoul using ASOS(Automated Synoptic Observing System) climate data observed in the Seoul sector which are provided by Korea Meteorological Administration. In addition, decision tree analysis techniques are used to forecast the level of traffic accidents severity. In the analytic results of this research, we expect that it will be helpful to establish the collective policy of bicycle accident data and protective strategy in order to reduce the number of bicycle accidents.

  • With the growing number of people using bicycle, the number of bicycle accidents also has been increasing. It is said that bicycle accident can be reduced up to 11%~44% when riding a bicycle if LED light is used. The headlight of the bicycle makes exposure effect to the opposite side of bike rider while taillight makes exposure effect to the rear bike rider for improving safety. Bicycle safety device capable of displaying a change of direction by LED is implemented in this study in response to control button signal. This signal makes LED light which is installed in pedal and wheel of bicycle as a module type emitting or flickering during the fixed hour. Bicycle auxiliary device in pedal which is able to improve safety using LED when bikers are riding a bike at night is developed in this study. Bicycle safety device applying wireless communication technology will be expected alternative technology in the future to solve a social problem such as energy, environment, and safety.

  • This study deals with characteristics and risk of a PM based on user survey result, road driving test and data analysis of PM accident. Text mining method is applied to extract PM accident data from Big Data, which are claim data of private insurance company. Road driving test and survey on safety, convenience, noise, overtake ability, steering ability, and climbing ability of PM are performed to evaluate user's safety and convenience considering domestic road condition. As the result of claim data analysis, annual average increase rate of PM accident is 47.4% and average compensation of personal mobility is higher than that of bicycle by maximum 1.5 times. 79.8% of PM accident is self-caused accident due to unskilled driving and age-specific diagnosis rate of driver over 60 is higher than that of under 60. Diagnosis rate of over 60 at lower limb, foot, rib and spine is especially higher than that of under 60. As the result of road driving test and user survey, satisfaction level on safety and convenience of PM is evaluated as close to that of bicycle and satisfaction level of PM is increased after boarding. Overtake ability, steering ability, and climbing ability of PM are evaluated as same or better than that of bicycle but warning equipment to pedestrian or bike such as horn is required because noise level of PM during driving is too low. Finally, user survey result shows that bicycle road is suitable for PM and safety standard, advance-education and insurance are required for PM. It is suggested that drivers' license for PM can be replaced by advance-education. Results of this study can be used to prepare safety measures and legal basis for PM operation.

  • In the present the usage of bicycle has increased steeply due to well-being and convenient way of movement. In car to bicycle accident, the throw distance of bicycle is very important factor for estimating collision situation. In this study, simulations and collision tests in actual car to bicycle were executed for obtaining throw distance of bicycle. The simulations were executed by PC-CRASHTM s/w with vehicle of sedan type. Sand bags were used for the behavior of bicyclist instead of dummy and factors considered were vehicle velocity, the crashed angles and part of bicycle to vehicle, and bicycle was adult type. From the results, the throw distances of tire collision of 00 was longer than that of 450 tire crash, and the throw distances of 900 frame crash were longer than those of 450 frame crash. With based on actual crash tests and simulations, restitution coefficient of between vehicle and bicycle was estimated as 0.1. Finally the increaser vehicle velocity the longer the throw distances of bicycle and the simulation results were relatively good agreement to the results of experiment.

  • A bicycle is one of the most popular sporting goods in view of a sport activity and a human health. Metallic materials such as steel, aluminum, etc. were mainly used to the bicycle fork in the past. Nowadays, the carbon fiber reinforced composite materials are widely used to the manufacturing of a bicycle fork to reduce the weight and to increase the efficiency. Safety is a most important design parameter of a bicycle fork even if the weight and cost reduction are important. Bicycle failure may happen at the critical spot of a bicycle fork and cause the accident. In this paper, the composite bicycle fork will be analyzed to secure the safety and detect a critical spot by using the finite element method with Tsai-Wu failure criterion. The stress data were obtained for the laminated composites with various number of plies and fiber orientation under the bending load. Thus, design concept of a bicycle fork was proposed to secure the safety of a bicycle. The finite element analysis results show that the connection area between a steer tube and a fork blade is critical spot, and 75 or more layers of 0 degree are needed to secure the safety of a bicycle fork.

  • Recently, bicycle accidents have increased with the ever-increasing number of cyclists. Bicycle accidents occurred frequently in intersections, and the perpendicular collision between a right-turning car and a crossing bicycle was the most prevalent accident type. In particular, the collision was caused by motorists' carelessness. In other words, the accident-involved motorists did not pay sufficient attention to a bicycle crossing behind them. Another cause was a cyclist's higher speed than pedestrians. This paper evaluated the potential risk of the collision between right-turning cars and crossing bicycles based on simulation experiments, with motorists' speed and carelessness focused on. Consequently, it was found that to reduce the potential risk of the collisions a motorist should slow down and pay more attention to the rear sight by turning his/her head.
