Applying Alcock-Paczynski Test to the Large Scale Structure

  • The main idea of the Alcock-Paczynski (AP) test is that, if we use a wrong distance-redshift relation to infer the shape of a spherical object in the Universe, this object may look non-spherical. To probe the cosmic expansion history through the AP test, the key point is to find something which is known as spherical in the Universe. We propose two possible ways applying the AP test to the large scale structure (LSS): 1) Based on the observed galaxies or quasars, one built up the beta-skeleton tracing the LSS, and investigating the inhomogeneity of the connections; 2) One reconstructs the smoothed density-contrast gradient field based on LSS observations, and investigating the inhomogeneity of the gradient vectors. Compared with some existed methods probing AP effect through 2-point correlation function, galaxy pairs, or voids, our methods have various advantages: 1) The information of both the high and low dense regions of the LSS are taken into account. 2) The redshift space distortion as the main contamination to the AP effect can be easily removed.

선박의 충돌로 인한 해양구조물의 거동 해석 (Analyses on the Behaviour of Ocean Structure Due to Ship Collision)

  • The simulation of motion responses of a dolphin-moored ocean structure in shallow water when it cllides with a ship, has been carried out. The equation of motion in the time domain according to Cummin's theory is employed, and solved by making use of the Newmark-${\beta}$ method. The added mass and damping coefficients involved in the equations are abtained from a three-dimensional panel method in the frequency domain. The impact forces due to ship collision are calculated using both the elastic and non-elastic modelings. The mooring forces for dolphin systems of ocean structure are regarded as linear spring forces.

Phagocytic Roles of Glial Cells in Healthy and Diseased Brains

  • Glial cells are receiving much attention since they have been recognized as important regulators of many aspects of brain function and disease. Recent evidence has revealed that two different glial cells, astrocytes and microglia, control synapse elimination under normal and pathological conditions via phagocytosis. Astrocytes use the MEGF10 and MERTK phagocytic pathways, and microglia use the classical complement pathway to recognize and eliminate unwanted synapses. Notably, glial phagocytosis also contributes to the clearance of disease-specific protein aggregates, such as ${\beta}$-amyloid, huntingtin, and ${\alpha}$-synuclein. Here we reivew recent findings showing that glial cells are active regulators in brain functions through phagocytosis and that changes in glial phagocytosis contribute to the pathogenesis of various neurodegenerative diseases. A better understanding of the cellular and molecular mechanisms of glial phagocytosis in healthy and diseased brains will greatly improve our current approach in treating these diseases.

On the Numerical Inversion of the Laplace Transform by the Use of an Optimized Legendre Polynomial

  • A method for inverting the Laplace transform is presented, using a finite series of the classical Legendre polynomials. The method recovers a real-valued function f(t) in a finite interval of the positive real axis when f(t) belongs to a certain class ${\mathcal{W}}_{\beta}$ and requires the knowledge of its Laplace transform F(s) only at a finite number of discrete points on the real axis s > 0. The choice of these points will be carefully considered so as to improve the approximation error as well as to minimize the number of steps needed in the evaluations. The method is tested on few examples, with particular emphasis on the estimation of the error bounds involved.

  • In this paper, the negative Polya-Eggenberger distribution has been introduced by compounding negative binomial distribution with beta distribution of I-kind which generates a number of univariate contagious or compound (or mixture of) distributions as its particular cases. The distribution is unimode, over dispersed and all of its positive and negative integer moments exist. The difference equation of the proposed model shows that it is a member of the Ord's family of distribution. Some of its interesting properties have been explored besides different methods of estimation been discussed. Finally, the parameters of the proposed model have been estimated by using a computer programme in R-software. Application of the proposed model to some data, available in the literature, has been given and its goodness of fit demonstrated.

  • The firtst-order conditional moment closure (CMC) model is applied to CH4/air swirl diffusion flame in a gas turbine model combustor. The flow and mixing fields are calculated by fast chemistry assumption with SLFM library and a beta function pdf for mixture fraction. RNG k-e model is used to consider the swirl flame in a confined wall. Reacting scalar fields are calculated by elliptic CMC formulation with chemical kinetic mechanism, GRI Mech 3.0. Validation is done against measurement data for mean flow and scalar fields in the model combustor [1]. Results show reasonable agreement with the mean mixture fraction and its variance, while temperature is overpredicted as the level of local extinction increases. The second-order CMC model is needed to consider local extinction with considerable conditional fluctuations near the nozzle.

The activation of PPAR-α and Wnt/β-catenin by Paeonia lactiflora root supercritical carbon dioxide extract

  • The root of Paeonia lactiflora has been used in Chinese medicine. We conducted to check the comparative qualities of ethanol solvent extraction (PLE) and supercritical carbon dioxide extraction (PLS) of P. lactiflora root. PLE had higher antioxidant and polyphenol contents than PLS. But, PLS were significantly increased peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)-α. In addition, PLS inhibited the adipocyte differentiation of 3T3-L1 cells. When treated with the extract at a concentration of 100 ㎍/mL, the Wnt/β-catenin pathway reporter luciferase activity of HEK 293-TOP cells increased approximately by 3-folds compared to that of the untreated control group. These results indicate that P. lactiflora supercritical carbon dioxide extract may serve as a cosmeceutical for improving skin barrier function and the treatment of obesity.

  • PM3 semiempirical calculations ions have performed on the three aromatic heterocyclic polymers. The dipole moment (${\mu}$7), static 1st-orders(${\alpha}$), 2nd-order (${\beta}$), and 3rd-order polarizabilities(${\gamma}$) were investigated to study the nonlinear optical properties of the polythiophene, polyfuran, and polypyrrole systems. As a function of n, ${\alpha}$ and ${\gamma}$ increases much more rapidly for the polythiophene systems than for the polyfuran and Polypyrrole systems due to the pi-electron delocalization.

PECVD로 제조된 비정질 질화탄소 박막의 물성에 미치는 열처리 효과 (Effects of Thermal Annealing on the Properties of Amorphous Carbon Nitride Films Deposited by PECVD)

  • Amorphous carbon nitride films deposited on Si(001) substrates by a plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) technique using CH$_4$and $N_2$as reaction gases were thermally annealed at various temperatures under$ N_2$atmosphere, then their physical properties were investigated particularly as a function of annealing temperature. Above $600^{\circ}C$ a small amount of crystalline $\beta$-$C_3$$N_4$ phase evolves, while the film surface becomes very rough due to agglomeration of fine grains on the surface. As the annealing temperature increases, both the hardness and the $sp^3$ bonding nature are enhanced. In contrast to our expectation, higher annealing temperature results in a relatively higher friction mainly due to big increase in roughness at that temperature.
