On Some Distributions Generated by Riff-Shuffle Sampling

  • The work presented in this paper is divided into two parts. The first part presents finite urn problems which generate truncated negative binomial random variables. Some combinatorial identities that arose from the negative binomial sampling and truncated negative binomial sampling are established. These identities are constructed and serve important roles when we deal with these distributions and their characteristics. Other important results including cumulants and moments of the distributions are given in somewhat simple forms. Second, the distributions of the maximum of two chi-square variables and the distributions of the maximum correlated F-variables are then derived within the negative binomial sampling scheme. Although multinomial theory applied to order statistics and standard transformation techniques can be used to derive these distributions, the negative binomial sampling approach provides more information and deeper insight regarding the nature of the relationship between the sampling vehicle and the probability distributions of these functions of chi-square variables. We also provide an algorithm to compute the percentage points of these distributions. We supplement our findings with exact simple computational methods where no interpolations are involved.

Backbone 1H, 15N, and 13C Resonances Assignment and Secondary Structure Prediction of SAV0506 from Staphylococcus aureus

  • SAV0506 is an 87 residue hypothetical protein from Staphylococcus aureus strain Mu50 and also predicted to have similar function to ribosome associated heat shock protein, Hsp 15. Hsp15 is thought to be involved in the repair mechanism of erroneously produced 50S ribosome subunit. In this report, we present the sequence specific backbone resonance assignment of SAV0506. About 82.5% of all resonances could be assigned unambiguously. By analyzing deviations of the $C{\alpha}$ and $C{\beta}$ chemical shift values, we could predict the secondary structure of SAV0506. This study is an essential step towards the structural characterization of SAV0506.

  • The mechanical and phase transformation of the cold isostatically pressed $\alpha$-SiC ceramic were investigated as a function of the sintering temperature. The result of phase analysis by XRD revealed 6H, 4H, 3C and phase transformation between 6H and 4H showed a sudden change over 200$0^{\circ}C$. However, the alongrightarrow$\beta$ reverse transformation did not occur to any sintering temperature. The relative density and the mechanical properties of $\alpha$-SiC ceramic was increased with increased sintering temperature. The flexural strength rapidly inclosed below 210$0^{\circ}C$ and showed the highest value of 410 MPa at 220$0^{\circ}C$. This reason is because crack was propagated through surface flaw. The fracture toughness showed the highest value of 3.3 MPa.m$_{1}$2/ at 220$0^{\circ}C$.

Study on Changes in Endogenous Stem Cells in the Salivary Gland of Streptozotocin-induced Diabetic Rats

  • Type1 diabetes mellitus (DM) is generally known to be caused by destruction of insulin-producing pancreatic ${\beta}$ cells or an immune-related problem. Polydipsia is a representative symptom of DM, and it has been reported that this condition is closely related to xerostomia and is considered that hyposalivation from the salivary gland results in this phenomenon. Although various studies have reported that induction of diabetes reduces endogenous stem cells in other organs (heart, brain etc.), diabetes-related changes in endogenous stem cells in the salivary gland have not yet been well established. Therefore, in this study, to verify the change in salivary gland stem cells after diabetes, salivary gland tissues in the control and diabetes-induced groups were processed by histochemistry (Masson's trichrome staining) for morphological analysis, TUNEL assay for cell death, and immunohistochemistry (Ki-67 and c-Kit) for cell proliferation and maturation. Diabetes induced by STZ leads to vacuolization, apoptosis, and reduction in proliferating cells/salivary gland stem cells in salivary glands of rats. This result suggests that diabetes may be associated with reduction in salivary gland function such as degeneration and inhibition of regeneration in the salivary gland.

  • 전신적으로 면역이 결핍된 백혈구 접착 결핍증 환아에서는 정기적인 구강 위생 관리는 매우 중요하다. 치면세균막의 제거를 통해 국소적인 자극원을 감소시킴으로써 구강 내 자극에 대한 동통이나 구취 감소가 가능하고 진행되는 치주조직의 파괴 양상을 어느 정도 지연시킬 수 있을 것으로 사료된다. 내원을 통한 관리도 중요하지만 잇솔질 교육을 통하여 환자 스스로 가정에서도 구강 위생 관리를 시행토록 하여야 하며 향후 감염원이 될 수 있는 원인을 감소시키는 노력이 필요하다.

한계상태식의 3차 다항식 근사를 통한 구조물 신뢰도 평가 (Structure Reliability Analysis using 3rd Order Polynomials Approximation of a Limit State Equation)

  • 본 논문에서는 불확실성을 확률변수로 가정하고 구조물의 파손기준을 한계상태식(Limit State Equation)으로 정의하였다. 한계상태식을 Fleishman의 3차 다항식으로 근사하고 이론적인 확률 모멘트(Moments)를 계산하였다. Fleishman은 표준정규 분포 확률변수에 대해서만 3차 다항식을 제시하였으나, 본 논문에서는 이를 확장하여 베타, 감마, 균일 분포 등 다양한 확률 변수에 적용하였다. 확률 모멘트를 계산하기 위해서 누률(Cumulants)과 정규화된 한계상태식을 활용하였으며, 피어슨 시스템(Pearson System)을 통해 한계상태식의 확률분포를 근사하였다.

급성기 뇌졸중 입원환자 가족 간호제공자의 부담감 영향요인 (Influencing Factors on the Family Caregivers' Burden of Inpatients with Acute Stroke)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the influencing factors on the family caregivers burden who have has inpatients with acute stroke. Methods: Subjects were 126 family caregivers who have has inpatients with acute stroke. Data were collected by questionnaires. The collected data were analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe's test, Pearson's coefficients and multiple regression. Results: The Anxiety of family caregivers was identified as a determinant of family caregivers burden who have has inpatients with acute stroke by the multiple regression analysis (${\beta}=.58$, p<.001). Gender and low cognitive function of inpatients were significantly related to family caregivers burden. And knowledge about care (r=-.27, p=.002) was correlated with anxiety significantly. Conclusion: The family caregivers burden is not only an important issue for nursing but also major nursing problem to be addressed nurses. Family caregivers with acute stroke inpatients feel more anxiety than family caregivers with other illnesses. The anxiety of family caregivers is important especially to the family caregivers who have to care acute stroke inpatients to reduce their burden.

Sol-Gel법으로 제조된 Ta2O5 박막의 유전특성과 누설전류 특성 (Dielectric Properties and Leakage Current Characteristics of Ta2O5 Thin Film Prepared by Sol-Gel Process)

  • Phase transition, dielectric properties, and leakage current characteristics of Ta2O5 thin film fabricated by sol-gel process with tantalum penta-n-butoxide were studied as a function of annealing temperature in O2 atmoshpere. Although Ta2O5 thin film annealed at temperatures below 700$^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr was amorphous, it was crystallized to ${\beta}$-Ta2O5 of orthorhombic phase by annealing at temperatures higher than 750$^{\circ}C$. With increasing annealing temperature from 500$^{\circ}C$ to 900$^{\circ}C$, dielectric constant of sol-gel processed Ta2O5 thin film was changed from 17.6 to 15.3 due to the increase of SiO2 thickness at Ta2O5/Si interface. For Ta2O5 thin film annealed at 500$^{\circ}C$ to 800$^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr in O2 atmosphere, leakage current was remarkably reduced and breakdown strength was increased with higher annealing temperature. For Ta2O5 film annealed at 800$^{\circ}C$, breakdown did not occur even at electric field strength of 30${\times}$105V/cm and leakage current was maintained lower than 10-8A/$\textrm{cm}^2$.

Recent Advances in Microstructural Tailoring of Silicon Nitride Ceramics and the Effects on Thermal Conductivity and Fracture Properties

  • Tailoring the microstructure and the composition of silicon nitride ceramics can have profound effects on their properties. Here it is shown that the grain growth behavior, in particular its anisotropy, is a function of the specific additives, which allow one to tune the microstructure from one consisting of more equiaxed grains to one with very elongated grains. Recent studies are discussed that provide an understanding of the atomic level processes by which these additives influence grain shapes. Next the microstructural (and compositional) parameters are discussed that can be used to modify the thermal conductivity, as well as fracture toughness of silicon nitride ceramics. As a result of the open <0001> channels in $\beta-Si_3N_4$, the c-axis conductivity can be exceptionally high. Thus, the formation of elongated c-axis grains, particularly when aligned can result in conductivity values approaching those of AlN ceramics. In addition, the controlled formation of elongated grains can also be used to significantly enhance the fracture toughness. At the same time, both properties are shown to be affected by the composition of the densification additives. Utilizing such understanding, one will be able to tailor the ceramics to achieve the properties desired for specific applications.

석탄바닥재가 포함된 유리의 결정화 특성에 미치는 HF 처리 효과 (Effect of HF Treatment on the Crystallization Behavior of the Glass Containing Coal Bottom Ashes)

  • The crystallization behavior and microstructural change of the glass-ceramics were analyzed as a function of concentration and etching time of the HF solution in order to enhance the degree of crystallinity induced by heterogeneous nucleation of glass of bottom ash containing 15 wt% $Li_2O$. The nucleation site seemed to be generated where the Si ion was eluted. The main crystal phases in the glass-ceramics fabricated in this study were $\beta$-spodumene and $Li_2SiO_3$. The specimens etched with HF of 0.5 vol% within 0~60 seconds showed increased crystalline peak intensities in XRD pattern with etching time compared to no-etched one. Also the crystal size and crystal occupancy in the glass matrix observed by SEM were increased with etching time. For the glass-ceramics etched with 1.0 and 2.0 vol% HF solution, the etching time over 10 s was not effective to increase the crystallinity. From this study, it was found that the glass-ceramics with the higher crystallinity could be obtained by HF-etching followed by heat treatment process, even though the nucleating agent or 2-stages thermal treatment process were not used.
