This study examines the relationship between a mother's psychological well-being and children's problematic behavior(withdrawal, depression anxiety, aggression and emotional instability). In order to expand the study on the relationships, special attention was given to the possible mediator effects of mother's coping style with children's negative emotions. The subjects were 305 mothers with children 4-5 years old residing in the cities of Cheonan and Seongnam. It was found that mother's psychological well-being was significantly related to the level of children's withdrawal, depression anxiety, aggression and emotional instability. The mother's coping style with children's negative emotions were also significantly related to the mother's psychological well-being. In addition the mother's coping style with children's negative emotions was found to be a significant mediator of the relationship between mother's psychological well-being and children's. This was especially so for internal problems behavior as like withdrawal, depression anxiety and emotional instability that were perfectly mediated by the mother's coping style with children's negative emotions. Aggression, external problems behavior was partially mediated by the mother's coping style.
This study examined the effects of the mother-child relationship and marital satisfaction on the subjective well-being of mothers with young children. The subjects consisted of 237 mothers with young children. Data were analyzed by means of multiple regression analysis, T-test and one way ANOVA. The results included that 1) There were clear differences in terms of the mother's level of education, her monthly income in household, and job satisfaction when it came to the subjective well-being of mothers. 2) The mother-child relationship and marital satisfaction were both positively correlated with the cognitive and affective factor (positive affects) of subjective well-being, whereas there were negative correlations with regard to affective factors (negative affects) of subjective well-being. 3) The mother-child relationship and marital satisfaction accounted for 32.5% of subjective well-being. More specifically, marital satisfaction was the most influential variable when it came to determining the level of life satisfaction (which is also a cognitive factor of subjective well-being), whereas the mother-child relationship was the most influential variable when it came to the affective factor of subjective well-being.
Objective: This study aimed to examine the effects of attachment and shared time between mother and child and self-esteem on subjective well-being in late childhood. Methods: A total of 329 fifth and sixth graders in elementary school (183 boys and 146 girls) participated in the study. They responded to questionnaires regarding attachment and shared time between mother and child and the self-esteem and subjective well-being of children. The data were analyzed using SEM. Results: Attachment and shared time between mother and child had an indirect effect through self-esteem as well as a direct effect on the subjective well-being of children. Children who formed secure attachments and spent more time with their mothers showed a higher level of subjective well-being. In addition, when children kept a good relationship with their mother quantitatively as well as qualitatively, they acknowledged their own capability and value positively, which led to higher subjective well-being. Conclusion: Findings emphasize that mother-child relationships play significant roles in predicting both the subjective well-being and self-esteem of children. The importance of self-esteem was identified in late childhood based on its relative influence on subjective well-being compared to mother-child relationships.
The purpose of this study was to understand the effects a mother's degree of obesity has on her daughter's obesity index, psychological well-being index, and nutrient intakes. The daughters, as study subjects, were classified into two groups according to their mother's body mass index (BMI): an obese group [BMI>25 kg/m$^2$, mother obesity group (MOG)] and a normal weight group [BMI<25 kg/m$^2$, mother normal weight group (MNG)]. The daughters in MOG showed significantly higher percent ideal body weight values than the daughters in MNG (p<0.001). MOG and MNG had significantly different psychological well-being index scores in terms of being classified into a highly stressed group (p<0.001), potentially stressed group (p<0.05), and healthy group (p<0.001). Intakes of daily energy, protein, fat, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, phosphorus, and iron were also significantly different (p<0.001) between MOG and MNG. In particular, the vitamin A and C intakes of the MNG daughters were significantly higher than those of the MOG daughters (p<0.001). Overall, the results showed that a mother's level of obesity was essentially related to her daughter's obesity index, psychological well-being index score, and nutrient intakes. Therefore, it seems necessary for mothers to maintain an ideal body weight to prevent obesity and diet related problems in their daughters.
The main purpose of this study was to examine the relations between Children's stress, self-esteem, and subjective well-being with a sample of 320 elementary school 5th graders (of which 161 were boys and 159 were girls) living in Seoul. They completed questionnaires on Children's stress, self-esteem, and subjective well-being. The results were analyzed by means of Pearson's correlation coefficients and regressions. It was observed that children's stress of studying/mother was negatively related to subjective well-being. Children's self-esteem was positively related to subjective well-being. Children's stress of studying/mother was negatively related to self-esteem. Self-esteem tended to play a perfectly mediating role between children's stress of studying/mother and subjective well-being. These results clearly indicate that children's self-esteem plays a crucial role in improving the levels of children's subjective well-being.
This study analyzes the meaning of madness shown in the female narrative, focusing on two novels- "Before the Operation" by Mei Niang and "Madman's Diary" by Baek Shin-Ae. The novel "Before the Operation" reveals women's instinctive desires through an insane woman and brings up a problem of unfair suppression caused by patriarchism. On the other hand, the heroine of "Madman's Diary" shows madness when she is at a crisis to be 'the other' in the patriarchal system. Her madness is caused because she fails to find the meaning of her presence in the system. Interestingly, a woman who departs from moral standards of patriarchy (from "Before the Operation") becomes thefocus of public censure while a man (from "Madman's Diary") who also ignores those standards seems to be a victim. In "Madman's Diary", the man's wife is accused of being mad while he draws sympathy as a victim. This shows that those moral standards have duplicity. At this point, the heroines who continuously adjust themselves to the system express their madness. In other words, the madness implies a stern protest against the moral standards applied differently to men and women. It is unique that the two heroines of the novels become 'sane' when they encounter thematter of 'being a mother'. When it comes to "Madman's Diary", 'being a mother' of the insane woman who becomes 'the other' in the system foretells dismal future. Meanwhile, Mei Niang indicates the way- 'being a mother'- to overcome the dismal future through "Before the Operation". In this case, the mother is not a figure that reproduces the patriarchal power structure, but an independent figure who wants to change it. For that reason, 'being a mother' has the meaning of subversion and resistance.
The study attempted to explore the dimensionality of mother's psychological well-being. The major purpose of the study was aimed at establishing the construct validity regarding the instrument of assessing mother's psychological well-being. Instrument for assessing psychological well-being was developed with 9 variables(sense of control, sense of achievement, sense of confidence, sense of acceptance, sense of intimacy, sense of assistance, sense of immersion, sense of hope, and sense of satisfacion) in 3 dimensions(sense of competency, sense of relation, and sense of improvement) with 4 rating scales of 102 items. After the scale development, the estimates of reliability for the 9-variable scales were Cronbach's ${\alpha}=.71{\sim}.90.$ The correlation between the two scales, Psychological Well-Being Index(Franklin, 1996) and Psychological Well-Being(Ryff & Keyes, 1995) was .21~25. The subjects were divided two groups by the score of the Mother's sense of Psychological Well-Being. And the group has hiher score in Mother's sense of Psychological Well-Being showed the higer score of Perceptions of Parental Role Responsibilities Scale(t=3.24, p=.002).
This study is about the influences of the type of after school care and the degree of mothers' affection and monitoring toward their children on the psychological well being of children with working mother. For this research 437 children attending an elementary school with working parent were chosen. The major finding were as follows: First, the results of the findings on whether there were differences in the psychological well being of these children depending on the form of after school care showed that there were significant differences between loneliness and self-perceives competence felt by children. Second, the results of the findings on whether there were differences in the psychological well being of these children depending on the mother's affection and monitoring showed that there were significant differences between loneliness and self-perceives competence felt by children. Third, Multiple regression analysis shows, no matter what type of care a child gets, a mother's affection is the most effective variable which influence toward a child's psychological well being.
Using survey data collected from 275 adolescent children of widowed or divorced single mother families, this study investigated the characteristics of family coping resources, including individual, financial, social, and mother-child relational resources and their effects on the psychological wellbeing of these adolescents. After controlling background variables of the family, higher depression among adolescents was associated with low grade point average, mother's high exposure to negative experiences after loss of father, low attachment to mother, and low sense of self-control. Furthermore, higher grade point average, strong attachment to mother, and high self-control in problem solving were factors predicting higher self-esteem of adolescents. Social network resources were not related to the psychological well-being of the adolescents. Discussion included recommendations for future research. Implications for policy and parent-child relations were discussed with a view to enhancing family functioning of adolescents in single-mother families.
The purpose of this study is to explore the general trends and the correlations of parent-child conflicts, copings, and psychological well-being of single mothers and their children, and to analyze the variables explaining relationships between single mothers and their children. The subjects were 196 dyads of single mothers and their children who reside in Gwangju city and Jeonnam area. The data were analyzed with frequency, t-Test, Pearsons' r, and multiple regression by SPSS. The major findings are as follows: 1. Scores of single mothers and their children had conflicts and emotion-focused copings lower than median. Another scores of single mothers and their children had significantly higher problem solving focused copings and emotion-focused copings than their children except life satisfaction; 2. Conflicts, copings, life satisfaction, and depression of a single mother were positively related to those of children; 3. Life satisfaction of single mothers depends on the reason for spouse-loss, their own education background, and problem solving-focused copings. Also, that of children depends on problem solving-focused copings, mother-child conflicts, and the mothers' education. Depression of single mothers is dependent upon mother-child conflicts, emotion-focused copings, and mothers' education. Also, that of children is upon mother-child conflicts, emotion-focused copings, mothers' education, and problem solving-focused copings.
