The ability of time reversal techniques to focus ultrasonic beams on the source location is important in many aspects of ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation. In this paper, we investigate the time reversal beam focusing of ultrasonic array sensors on a defect in layered media. Numerical modeling is performed using the commercially available software which employs a time domain finite difference method. Two different time reversal approaches are considered - the through transmission and the pulse-echo. Linear array sensors composed of N elements of line sources are used for signal reception/excitation, time reversal, and reemission in time reversal processes associated with the scattering source of a side-drilled hole located in the second layer of two layer structure. The simulation results demonstrate the time reversal focusing even with multiple reflections from the interface of layered structure. We examine the focusing resolution that is related to the propagation distance, the size of array sensor and the wavelength.

Laser melting problems with deformed substrates are investigated by axisymmetric numerical simulations. Source-based method is used to solve the energy equation, and the momentum equations are solved in the liquid domain with SIMPLER algorithm. Using a laser beam with a top-hat heat flux distribution, this study is performed to examine the effect of surface deformation, beam power density and surface tension force on the molten pool during laser melting. Surface temperature decreases with increasing surface deformation, while surface velocity increases. It is found that surface deformation, beam power density and surface tension force have a very significant effect on heat transfer and fluid flow during laser melting.
In this paper, we present a new method to calculate interface warping functions for the analysis of beams with geometric and material discontinuities in the longitudinal direction. The classical Saint Venant torsion theory is extended to a three-dimensional domain by considering the longitudinal direction. The interface warping is calculated by considering both adjacent cross-sections of a given interface. We also propose a finite element procedure to simultaneously calculate the interface warping function and the corresponding twisting center. The calculated interface warping functions are employed in the continuum-mechanics based beam formulation to analyze arbitrary shape cross-section beams with longitudinal discontinuities. Compared to the previous work by Yoon and Lee (2014a), both geometric and material discontinuities are considered with fewer degrees of freedom and higher accuracy in beam finite element analysis. Through various numerical examples, the effectiveness of the proposed interface warping function is demonstrated.

This paper presents the analysis of a time reversal process for $A_0$ Lamb wave mode($A_0$ mode) on a rectangular plate. The dispersion characteristic equation of the $A_0$ mode is approximated using the Timoshenko beam theory. A virtual sensor array model is developed to consider the effects of reflections occurring on the plate boundary on the time reversal process. The time reversal process is formulated in the frequency domain using the virtual sensor array model. The reconstructed signal is obtained in the time domain through an inverse fast Fourier transform. The validity of the proposed method is demonstrated through the comparison to the numerical simulation results computed by the finite element analysis.
Images were acquired by the modulation of terahertz electromagnetic signals and compared by modulation frequencies. For the real-time acquisition of images a fast scanning method has been adopted utilizing a galvanometer. The acquired time domain waveforms were transformed into frequency domain data by fast Fourier transformations (FFT). We chose some frequency components to compare the resolution of images. The beam profiles at the focal position were measured by a knife-edge technique. Beam diameter was shown to decrease as the frequency increased. By scanning one- and two-dimensional samples a significant image enhancement was observed with the frequency increment. A nondesouctive imaging system using ㎔ electromagnetic pulses was also demonstrated.
We developed a numerical simulator in order to study the Super-RENS/ROM (Super REsolution Near-Field Structure, Read Only Memory) using 3-dimensional FDTD (finite difference time domain) method. The simulation can be performed by three steps. In the first step, we utilized the vector-diffraction theory to calculate the characteristics of incident laser beam from the object-lens to the surface of the disk. At the second step, we fed the calculated result as an input for the main FDTD simulations on the optical layers in the disk structure. After performed the FDTD simulations, we took near-to-far field transformation for the reflected signal, from the surface of the disk to the detector. Finally, we can get reflected signal at the photo-diode. Using this developed simulator, we were able to study about the reading signal from various disk structures as a function of a laser beam position. We calculated reading signals for various pit sizes for Super-ROM structure, and it is found that the simple optical diffraction theory can not explain the reading mechanism of Super-ROM, and more complicated temperature dependent physics must be involved.

This paper presents the study on damage diagnosis of an intelligent cantilevered beams using PZT actuator and PVDF sensor This study provides the theoretical and experimental verification to examine structural damage. Time domain analysis for the non-destructive detection of damage is presented by parameterized partial differential equations and Galerkin approximation techniques. The time histories of the vibration response of structure were used to identify the presence of damage. Furthermore, this systematic approach permits one to use the piezomaterials to both excite and sense the vibration of structures. We also carried out the experimental verification about reliability of theoretical methods fur detecting the damage of a composite beam with PZT actuator and PVDF sensor. Experimental results are presented from tests on cantilevered composite beams which is damaged at different location and different dimensions. The results were compared with the simulation results. Good agreement between the results was found for the time shifts and amplitude difference in transients response of the cantilevered beam.
In order to do continuous health monitoring of large structures, it is necessary that the distributed sensing of strain and temperature of the structures be measured. So, we present the temperature compensation of a signal from a fiber optic BOTDA (Brillouin Optical Time Domain Analysis) sensor. A fiber optic BOTDA sensor has good performance of strain measurement. However, the signal of a fiber optic BOTDA sensor is influenced by strain and temperature. Therefore, we applied an optical fiber on the beam as follows: one part of the fiber, which is sensitive to the strain and the temperature, is bonded on the surface of the beam and another part of the fiber, which is only sensitive to the temperature, is located nearby the strain sensing fiber. Therefore, the strains can be determined from the strain sensing fiber while compensating for the temperature from the temperature sensing fiber. These measured strains were compared with the strains from electrical strain gages. After temperature compensation, it was concluded that the strains from the fiber optic BOTDA sensor had good coincidence with those values of the conventional electrical strain gages.

This paper presents spectral element formulation which approximates Lamb wave propagation by PZT transducers bonded on a thin plate. A two layer beam model under 2-D plane strain condition is introduced to simulate high-frequency dynamic responses induced by a piezoelectric (PZT) layer rigidly bonded on a base plate. Mindlin-Herrmann and Timoshenko beam theories are employed to represent the first symmetric and anti-symmetric Lamb wave modes on a base plate, respectively. The Euler-Bernoulli beam theory and 1-D linear piezoelectricity are used to model the electro-mechanical behavior of a PZT layer. The equations of motions of a two layer beam model are derived through Hamilton's principle. The necessary boundary conditions associated with the electro-mechanical properties of a PZT layer are formulated in the context of dual functions of a PZT layer as an actuator and a sensor. General spectral shape functions of response field and the associated boundary conditions are obtained through equations of motions converted into frequency domain. Detailed spectrum element formulation for composing the dynamic stiffness matrix of a two layer beam model is presented as well. The validity of the proposed spectral element is demonstrated through numerical examples.
