  • This paper presents a stochastic model for the software failure phenomenon based on a nonhomogeneous Poisson process (NHPP) and performs Bayesian inference using prior information. The failure process is analyzed to develop a suitable mean value function for the NHPP; expressions are given for several performance measure. The parametric inferences of the model using Logarithmic Poisson model, Crow model and Rayleigh model is discussed. Bayesian computation and model selection using the sum of squared errors. The numerical results of this models are applied to real software failure data. Tools of parameter inference was used method of Gibbs sampling and Metropolis algorithm. The numerical example by T1 data (Musa) was illustrated.

  • Generally, a natural river discharge is highly regulated by the hydraulic structures, and the regulated flow is substantially different from natural inflow characteristics for the use of water resources planning. The natural inflow data are necessarily required for hydrologic analysis and water resources planning. This study aimed to develop an integrated model for more reliable simulation of daily dam inflow. First, a piecewise Kernel-Pareto distribution was used for rainfall simulation model, which can more effectively reproduce the low order moments (e.g. mean and median) as well as the extremes. Second, a Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo scheme was applied for the SAC-SMA rainfall-runoff model that is able to quantitatively assess uncertainties associated with model parameters. It was confirmed that the proposed modeling scheme is capable of reproducing the underlying statistical properties of discharge, and can be further used to provide a set of plausible scenarios for water budget analysis in water resources planning.

  • This study provides empirical evidence that the stochastic beta model based on Bayesian analysis outperforms the existing conditional beta model and GARCH model in terms of the estimation accuracy and the explanatory power in the cross-section of stock returns in Korea. Betas estimated by the stochastic beta model explain $30{\sim}50%$ of the cross-sectional variation in stock-returns, whereas other time-varying beta models account for less than 3%. Such a difference in explanatory power across models turns out to come from the fact that the stochastic beta model absorbs the variation due to the market anomalies such as size, BE/ME, and idiosyncratic volatility. These results support the rational asset pricing model in that market anomalies are closely related to the variation of expected returns generated by time-varying betas.

  • Latent Class model has been considered recently by many researchers and practitioners as a tool for identifying heterogeneous segments or groups in a population, and grouping objects into the segments. In this paper we consider data on prostate cancer patients from Korean National Cancer Institute and propose a method for grouping prostate cancer patients by using latent class Poisson model. A Bayesian approach equipped with a Markov chain Monte Carlo method is used to overcome the limit of classical likelihood approaches. Advantages of the proposed Bayesian method are easy estimation of parameters with their standard errors, segmentation of objects into groups, and provision of uncertainty measures for the segmentation. In addition, we provide a method to determine an appropriate number of segments for the given data so that the method automatically chooses the number of segments and partitions objects into heterogeneous segments.

  • The main objective is to predict the future degradation and maintenance budget for a suspension bridge system. Bayesian inference is applied to find the posterior probability density function of the source parameters (damage indices and serviceability), given ten years of maintenance data. The posterior distribution of the parameters is sampled using a Markov chain Monte Carlo method. The simulated risk prediction for decreased serviceability conditions are posterior distributions based on prior distribution and likelihood of data updated from annual maintenance tasks. Compared with conventional linear prediction model, the proposed quadratic model provides highly improved convergence and closeness to measured data in terms of serviceability, risky factors, and maintenance budget for bridge components, which allows forecasting a future performance and financial management of complex infrastructures based on the proposed quadratic stochastic regression model.

  • For the balanced variance component model, sometimes intraclass correlation coefficient is of interest. If there is little information about the parameter, then the reference prior(Berger and Bernardo, 1992) is widely used. Pettit nd Young(1990) considered a measrue of the effect of a single observation on a logarithmic Bayes factor. However, under such a reference prior, the Bayes factor depends on the ratio of unspecified constants. In order to discard this problem, influence diagnostic measures using the intrinsic Bayes factor(Berger and Pericchi, 1996) is presented. Finally, one simulated dataset is provided which illustrates the methodology with appropriate simulation based computational formulas. In order to overcome the difficult Bayesian computation, MCMC methods, such as Gibbs sampler(Gelfand and Smith, 1990) and Metropolis algorithm, are empolyed.

  • We introduce a MCMC sampling for a generalized linear normal random effects model with the ordered probit link function based on latent variables from suitable truncated normal distribution. Such models have proven useful in practice and we have observed numerically reasonable results in the estimation of fixed effects when the random effect term is provided. Applications that utilize Korean Welfare Panel Study data can be difficult to model; subsequently, we find that an ordered probit model with the random effects leads to an improved analyses with more accurate and precise inferences.

  • In this paper we consider the well-known semiparametric proportional hazards (PH) models for survival analysis. These models are usually used with few covariates and many observations (subjects). But, for a typical setting of gene expression data from DNA microarray, we need to consider the case where the number of covariates p exceeds the number of samples n. For a given vector of response values which are times to event (death or censored times) and p gene expressions (covariates), we address the issue of how to reduce the dimension by selecting the significant genes. This approach enable us to estimate the survival curve when n < < p. In our approach, rather than fixing the number of selected genes, we will assign a prior distribution to this number. The approach creates additional flexibility by allowing the imposition of constraints, such as bounding the dimension via a prior, which in effect works as a penalty. To implement our methodology, we use a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method. We demonstrate the use of the methodology to diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) complementary DNA(cDNA) data.

  • In this paper, we consider two components system which lifetimes have Freund's bivariate exponential model with equal failure rates. We propose Bayesian multiple comparisons procedure for the failure rates of I Freund's bivariate exponential populations based on Dirichlet process priors(DPP). The family of DPP is applied in the form of baseline prior and likelihood combination to provide the comparisons. Computation of the posterior probabilities of all possible hypotheses are carried out through Markov Chain Monte Carlo(MCMC) method, namely, Gibbs sampling, due to the intractability of analytic evaluation. The whole process of multiple comparisons problem for the failure rates of bivariate exponential populations is illustrated through a numerical example.
