  • Well known environmental wastes from dye industry were separated by the micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography(MECC). These wastes include H-acid modifier and 2-naphthylamine-1,5-disulfonic acid, and are known to be the diazo components of the azo dye. The results of the separation were compared with the result obtained by the HPLC using ion-pairing mechnism. MECC method was also applied to separate a few direct dyes including Direct Blue 2, Direct Blue 6 and Direct Blue 15, and reactive dye such as Reactive Orange 4. Informations about the diazo components of any azo dye could be obtained by comparison of electropherogram of the reduction solution of given dye with those obtained from standard materials such as H-acid, J-acid, ${\gamma}$-acid, orthanilic acid, sulfanilic acid and 2-naphthylamine-1,5-disulfonic acid which are used as diazo components of the typical azo dyes. It has been concluded that MECC and HPLC with ion-pairing mechanism could be successfully applied for the analysis of unknown dyes and their diazo components.

  • A series of new direct dyes based on benzidine congeners, 2,2'-dimethyl-5,5'-dipropoxybenzidine and 5,5'-dipropoxybenzidine, were evaluated for mutagenicity in Salmonella typhimurium strains TA98 and TA100. All of the dyes examined were judged to be non-mutagenic with and without metabolic activation while toxicity was seen in some dyes at high doses. The study also suggested that the standard Salmonella mutagenicity plate-incorporated assay was an excellent method for evaluation of direct dyes for mutagenicity.

  • The fixing behaviors of anthraquinone disperse dyes containing dimethylamino substituent, such as C. I. Disperse Violet 26(D.V.26) and C. I. Disperse Blue 14(D.V.14), or containing diamino substituent, such as C. I. Disperse Blue 73(D.B.73), and monochlorotriazinyl azo reactive dyes, such as C. I. Reactive Orange 13(R.O.13), C. I. Reactive Red 3(R.R.3). C. I. Reactive Yellow 2(R.Y.2) on polyester/cotton blend(P/C) fabrics were examined for the one-step printing of P/C fabrics. The high temperature steaming of $175^{\circ}C$ is the most satisfactory fixing method for P/C one-step printing with above disperse and reactive dyes among the four different fixing methods: $175^{\circ}C$ steaming, $102^{\circ}C$ steaming${\rightarrow}175^{\circ}C$ steaming, $190^{\circ}C$ thermosol, $102^{\circ}C$ steaming${\rightarrow}190^{\circ}C$ thermosol. $190^{\circ}C$ thermosol is unfit to fix R.R.3 and R.Y.2 whose heat stability is poor. It was found that D.V.26 and D.B.14 containing dimethylamino substituent are unstable for heat and alkali, but D.B.73 is stable for them to print P/C blend fabrics with R.O.13 which is also stable for heat. Therefore we found that D.B.73, R.O.13 and a pair of D.B.73 and R.O.13 were very suitable for one-step printing of P/C blend fabrics.

  • Five dyes based on phthalocyanine, a dye on azo, and a dye on anhraquinone were prepared from corresponding starting material to investigate the effects of substituent on thermal-stability of dyes which is essentially required to apply to the color filters. Synthesized dyes were confirmed their chemical structure using by 1H-NMR, MASS and Elemental analysis. The thermal-stability was evaluated by the weight reductions measured by TGA analysis comparing to that of conventional C.I. Pigment Blue 15:6. The absorption maxima were measured by UV-VIS spectrophotometer then the effects of substituent on absorption maximum was also investigated.

  • In order to study the dyeing property of acrylic and cotton blends with cationic and reactive dyes, staining on cotton of cationic dyes, stability of cationic dyes, and fastness properties in various conditions were investigated. The restlts obatined from this study are summarized as follows: 1. Cationic oxazine dyes showed good stability in comparison with cationic azo dyes. 2. Staining of cationic dyes on cotton was gradually increased with pH and neutral salt concentration, but decreased with dyeing time and dyeing temperture.

  • Waterborne PU membrane was prepared from waterborne PU dispersion solution to investigate physical and staining properties. The staining properties of waterborne PU membrane with acid dyes and disperse dyes were observed. The physical properties of the PU membrane were investigated by X-ray diffraction and IR spectroscopy. The staining property of waterborne PU membrane for azo acid dyes is better than that of disperse dyes. X-ray diffraction peaks sharpened and tensile strain and stress increased with heat setting temperature.

  • A series of azo based disperse dyes were synthesized and applied to polyester(PET) fiber in supercritical carbon dioxide($ScCO_2$). Various aniline derivatives were used as diazo component and coupled with glycine ethylester or carbonic acid ethylester derivatives to give azo based disperse dyes. Depending on the various diazo substituents, absorption maxima varied from 415 to 529nm in acetone. Dyeing in $ScCO_2$ was carried out at $120^{\circ}C$ and 250bar pressure for 2hrs with 0.5% o.w.f. of dye concentration. Dyed PET fiber had excellent brightness and good light, washing and perspiration(acid/alkali) fastness properties.

  • In this study, a convenient approach for sensitive, quick and simple detection of hazardous acids was investigated. A series of azo dyes were synthesized and applied as a chemosensor for the acid detection both on fibers and in solution. Various aniline, benzothiazole or isoxazole derivatives were used as diazo component and coupled with N-benzyl-N-ethylaniline or 2,2'-(phenylimino)bis-ethanol to give azo based dyes. The acid sensing phenomenon was observed by naked-eye and detection was further confirmed by UV-Vis spectrophotometer and hue difference(ΔH*) evaluation. The developed sensors showed a distinct and quick color change from yellow to magenta by addition of trace amounts of the hazardous acids. The absorption maxima was shifted to a longer wavelength by 70 ~ 150nm and hue difference(ΔH*) was 60 ~ 120°. A cotton fiber coated with Dye 1 exhibited excellent storage stability under various temperature(-30 ~ 43℃) and humidity(30 ~ 80%) conditions without discoloration and fading of the fiber sensors. Also the acid sensing properties were maintained.

  • In order to synthesize the dye suitable for supercritical carbon dioxide(ScCO2) dyeing, a series of azo based disperse dyes were prepared using various aniline derivatives as diazo components and indol derivatives as coupling components. Dyeing process in ScCO2 of the synthesized dyes was performed on PET fiber at 120℃ for 2 hrs under 250bar pressure with 0.5% o.w.f. of dye concentration. The absorption maxima varied from 400 to 580nm depending on the substituted groups in aniline derivatives and the indol derivatives. The dyes showed high molar extinction coefficients(ε) of 27,000~61,000M-1cm-1. Dyed PET fiber exhibited excellent brightness and good light, washing and perspiration(acid/alkali) fastness properties.
