Free vibration analysis of multi-delaminated composite beam-columns subjected to axial compression load is performed in the present study. In order to investigate the effects of multi-delaminations on the natural frequency and elastic buckling load of multi-delaminated beam-columns, the general kinematic continuity conditions are derived from the assumption of constant slope and curvature at the multi-delamination tip. Characteristic equation of multi-delaminated beam-column is obtained by dividing the global multi-delaminated beam-columns into segments and by imposing recurrence relation from the continuity conditions on each sub-beam-column. The natural frequency and elastic buckling load of multi-delaminated beam-columns according to the incremental load of axial compression, which is limited to the maximum elastic buckling load of sound laminated beam-column, are obtained. It is found that the sizes, locations and numbers of multi-delaminations have significant effect on natural frequency and elastic buckling load, especially the latter ones.

An extension of the finite element method to the stability analysis of shells of revolution under static axisymmetric loading is presented in this paper. A systematic procedure for the formulation of the problem is based upon the principle of virtual work. This procedure results in an eigenvalue problem. For solution, the shell of revolution is discretized into a series of conical frusta. The buckling mode in the circumferential direction is assumed, this assumption makes the problem economical for the computing time. The present method is applied to a number of shells of revolution, under axial compression or lateral pressure, and comparision are made with other theoretical results. The results show good agreement each other. The effects of aspect ratio, boundary conditions and buckling modes on the buckling strength of shells of revolution are studied. Also the optimum shape of cylindrical shell under uniform axial compression is obtained from the view point of structural stability.
This paper studies the behaviour of a homogeneous cable in a horizontal rigid duct and loaded by an axial compressive force. This behaviour is characterized by spatial buckling modes, named sinusoidal and helical, due to friction and total or partial cable locking. The evaluation of critical buckling loads involved by drilling technology has been studied by many authors. This work presents a new formulation, taking the friction effects into account, for the transmission of the axial load during the postbuckling process. New analytical expressions of pitches in both buckling cases are also given. A life-sized bench is presented, which permits to study the laying of optical fiber cables by squeezing them into an underground duct. Finally, analytical solutions are compared with experimental tests and finite element simulations.

The effects of prebuckling on the buckling of laminated composite cylindrical shells are investigated. Both axial compression and lateral pressure are considered for laminated composite cylindrical shells with length to radius ratios usually associated with container vessels. The shell walls are made of a laminate with several symmetric ply orientations. The study was made using finite difference energy method, utilizing the nonlinear bifurcation branch with nonlinear prebuckling displacements. The results are compared to the buckling loads determined when prebuckling displacements are neglected.

This paper presents an analytical investigation pertaining to the elastic buckling behavior of pultruded fiber reinforced plastic equal-leg angle members under concentric axial compression. The elastic local and global buckling (flexural, torsional, and flexural-torsional) analyses are conducted, respectively, and the analytical results are compared with the existing experimental results. The differences were more than 10%, and the experimental results were higher than the analytical results.

Buckling behavior of stiffened laminated composite cylindrical panel was studied using linear and nonlinear deformation theory. Various buckling load factors are obtained for stiffened laminated composite cylindrical panels with rectangular type longitudinal stiffeners and various longitudinal length to radius ratio, which made from Carbon/Epoxy USN150 prepreg and are simply-supported on four edges under uniaxial compression. Buckling behavior design analyses are carried out by the nonlinear search optimizer, ADS.

The axial-flow-induced vibration of fuel rods in the nuclear power plant is closely related to nuclear safety. In this article, a numerical study is performed on vibration of two elastic cylinders arranged side-by-side in axial flow. Large eddy simulation is employed to predict the turbulent flow. The numerical method has been verified using the experimental root-mean-square vibration amplitude of a single cylinder. A wide range of inflow velocities u*, incident turbulence intensity Tu and space ratio P/D have been examined, where D and P are the diameter and centre-to-centre distance of the cylinders, respectively. The results show that the vibration amplitudes increase with an increasing u*, comparable to the case of a single cylinder in axial flow. However, the two cylinders could bend outwards during a relatively high u* and low Tu. Although Tu significantly affects the amplitudes of the cylinders, it does not change the vibration frequency and the critical velocity at which buckling instability occurs. As the gap between the two cylinders is sufficiently small, the vibration amplitude enhances significantly due to the pronounced hydrodynamic interaction between the two elastic cylinders and surrounding fluid. The direction of buckling is no longer random but fixed.

The current paper illustrates the effect of in-plane varying compressive force on critical buckling loads and buckling modes of sandwich composite laminated beam rested on elastic foundation. To generalize a proposed model, unified higher order shear deformation beam theories are exploited through analysis; those satisfy the parabolic variation of shear across the thickness. Therefore, there is no need for shear correction factor. Winkler and Pasternak elastic foundations are presented to consider the effect of any elastic medium surrounding beam structure. The Hamilton's principle is proposed to derive the equilibrium equations of unified sandwich composite laminated beams. Differential quadrature numerical method (DQNM) is used to discretize the differential equilibrium equations in spatial direction. After that, eigenvalue problem is solved to obtain the buckling loads and associated mode shapes. The proposed model is validated with previous published works and good matching is observed. The numerical results are carried out to show effects of axial load functions, lamination thicknesses, orthotropy and elastic foundation constants on the buckling loads and mode shapes of sandwich composite beam. This model is important in designing of aircrafts and ships when non-uniform compressive load and shear loading is dominated.
The theories having been developed thus far account for higher-order variation of transverse shear strain through the depth of the beam and satisfy the stress-free boundary conditions on the top and bottom surfaces of the beam. A shear correction factor, therefore, is not required. In this paper, the effect of surface on the axial buckling and free vibration of nanobeams is studied using various refined higher-order shear deformation beam theories. Furthermore, these theories have strong similarities with Euler-Bernoulli beam theory in aspects such as equations of motion, boundary conditions, and expressions of the resultant stress. The equations of motion and boundary conditions were derived from Hamilton's principle. The resultant system of ordinary differential equations was solved analytically. The effects of the nanobeam length-to-thickness ratio, thickness, and modes on the buckling and free vibration of the nanobeams were also investigated. Finally, it was found that the buckling and free vibration behavior of a nanobeam is size-dependent and that surface effects and surface energy produce significant effects by increasing the ratio of surface area to bulk at nano-scale. The results indicated that surface effects influence the buckling and free vibration performance of nanobeams and that increasing the length-to-thickness increases the buckling and free vibration in various higher-order shear deformation beam theories. This study can assist in measuring the mechanical properties of nanobeams accurately and designing nanobeam-based devices and systems.

This paper presents buckling analysis of the cylindrical shell subjected to axial loads using numerical method. The modeling method, appropriate element type, and number of element are recommended by comparing with analytical solution. Based on the parametric study, buckling stress decreases significantly as the diameter-thickness ratio increases. These results are different from those obtained from buckling analysis of columns. The number of buckling half-wave in circumferential direction decreases as the diameter-height ratio increases. Buckling stress increases 1~2% as the thickness of base plate increases. Therefore the effect of base plate on buckling strength for cylindrical shell can be disregarded. Buckling stress significantly decreases as the amplitude of initial geometric imperfection used for calculating buckling stress is developed and it shows a good agreement with numerical results.
