  • Nine species of plant parasitic nematodes, Aphelenchoides besseyi, Aphelenchus avenae, Criconemoides informis, Helicotylenchus dihystera, Meloidogyne arenaria, Meloidogyne hapla, Pratylenchus minyus and Tylenchus sp. Were found in peanut field in Korea. Chemicals used were; Telon C-17, Mocap 10G and Carbofuran 3G for control peanut parasitic nematodes. All chemicals reduced nematode populations but varied in effectiveness. Telon C-17 was especially effective against Meloidogyne hapla, the principal species on peanut and resulted in significant yield increased than the control. Plant height, number of branches and dry weight of peanut were increased over the nontreated control by chemical soil treatments.

  • The effectiveness of four plant oils (garlic, ginger, cinnamon and lemongrass) against a range of plant pathogenic organisms was tested in vitro. Of the four oils, two oils (garlic and cinnamon) showed relatively good antimicrobial activities. Activity of garlic oil was shown against the plant pathogenic bacteria Agrobacterium tumefaciens, Ewinia carotovora, Ralstonia solanacearum, Xanthomonas campestris, and the fungi Phytophthora infestans, Fusarium oxysporum, Collectotricum sp., whereas Acidovorax avenae and Pythium sp. showed the resistance towards garlic oil. Results from the planta bioassays under greenhouse conditions indicated that garlic oil significantly reduced the cucumber powdery mildew (Sphaerotheca fusca) and tomato powdery mildew (Erysiphe cichoracearum) showing control value 70.0-74.6% and 71.2%, respectively.

  • This survey was aimed to accumulate basic data of aphid population at the Horticultural Experiment Station at Suweon. The yellow pan traps were setted at five locations (Fig.1.), and ran from May 1 to October 31. 1970. About one hundred and twenty species of aphids were trapped, including 24 species of plant vims vectors. Of these, dominant species were as follows: (Asterisk shows virus vector) Aphid species No. of catches * Aphis spiraecola PATCH 2,635, * Aphis craccivora KOCH 2,377, * Myzus persicae SULXER 2,111, Capitophorus hippophaes javanicus H.R. LAMBERS 2,051, Anoecia fulviabdominalis SASAKI 1,480, * Aphis gossypii GLOVER 867, * Macrosiphum avenae FABRICIUS 859, Cervaphis quercus TAKAHASHI 692, * Lipaphis erysimi KALTENBACH 645, Pleotrichophorus chrysanthemi THEOBALD 489, The above 10 species consisted $76.5\%$ of total catches and the 24 vector species consisted $55.5\%$. The curve of the seasonal occurrence of flying aphids at Horticultural Experiment Station shows bimodal, typical for the temperate region. The total number of trapped aphids at the Station from May to September, 1970, were less than that of average yearly catches at the College of Agriculture from 1967 to 1970. Thi, low numbers at Horticultural Experiment Station may attribute to the frequent spraying of insecticides from Spring to Summer on growing crops there. But the aphids population increase suddenly in the middle of October. This might be resulted from cease of insecticide applications and migration of aphids from summer host to winter host plants.

  • Cereal, including barley, wheat, and oats, is a major winter food crop in Korea. Despite recent changes in agricultural environments in response to climate change, fungal diseases that could affect cereal productivity remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the incidence of diseases in barley, wheat, and oats in the southern part of Korea. We collected fungal pathogens from seven locations where cereals were grown. In March-April of 2020 and 2021, a total of 92 fungal isolates were collected, mainly from the stem base or leaves of cereal crops during the tillering and stem extension stages of cereals in Korea. The collected isolates were identified based on morphological and molecular biological characteristics. The dominant species was Ceratobasidium cereale (42.4%), followed by Pyrenophora teres (21.7%), P. avenae (10.9%), Alternaria alternata (6.5%), and Epicoccum tobaicum (6.5%). In addition, P. tritici-repentis (3.3%), Cladosporium sp. (3.3%), Fusarium sp. (3.3%), and Nigrospora sp. (2.2%) were also collected as minority groups. Our results will provide information on fungal pathogens that occur during the growing season of cereals in Korea, particularly during the tillering and stem extension stages. In addition, the isolates collected from this study can serve as a valuable resource for conducting simulations on climate change, focusing on temperature and humidity.

  • To date, chemical managements of plant bacterial diseases are complicated by limitations on use of antibiotics in agriculture, antibiotic resistance development, and limited efficacy of alternative control agents. In this study, thus, we performed screening of eco-friendly farming material (notice no. 2-4-064) containing tannic acid as new antibacterial-activity against 7 plant bacterial pathogens: Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum (Pcc), Ralstonia solanacearum (Rs), Acidovorax avenae subsp. citrulli (Aac), Xanthomonas cirti pv. citri (Xcc), Erwinia pyrifoliae (Ep), Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. michiganensis (Cmm), and Streptomyces scabies (Sc), Initial screening of antibacterial effects of eco-friendly farming material was performed using the paper disk diffusion method and co-cultivation in broth culture. Tannic acid based eco-friendly farming material showed inhibitory effect against Pcc, Rs, Aac, Xcc, Cmm, and Ss, whereas it did not show inhibition zone against Ep. However, when it tested by co-cultivation in broth culture, it showed strong inhibition effect against all pathogens that declined growth curve compared to bacterial pathogen only. Interestingly, when we observed morphological changes on those pathogens by SEM, cell morphologies of 7 pathogens were slightly changed that seem to be malfunction in their cell envelope.

  • Survey on soybean parasitic nematodes has been undertaken in order to get an ideas about the distribution of nemic fauna. Total 71 soil samples were collected from soybean fields in Gyeongbug and Chungbug provinces. Eighteen species belonging to fourteen different genera were found associated with soybean, Glycine max. The results were as follows: Aphelenchus avenae, Circonemoides informis, Ditylenchus dipsaci, Helicotylenchus pseudorobustus, Heterodera glycines, Hirschmanniella imamuri, Meloidogyne hapla, Meloidogyne incognita, Paratylenchus pandus, Pratylenchus thornei, Pratylenchus vulnus, Psilenchus hilarulus, Rotylenchus sp. Tylenchorhynchus clay toni, Tylenchorhynchus dubius, Tylenchorhynchus nudus, Tylenchus sp. Xiphinema americanum were found in soybean fields. In frequency of occurring nematodes by localities, soybean cyst nematode was higher in Chungbug by $70\%$, while $50\%$ in Gyeongbug. But rook-knot nematode was higher in Gyeongbug by $54.1\%$, while $19.1\%$ in Chungbug. In density of nematode, Heterodera was the most dominant as 200.4 populations per 100ml soil, Meloidogyne as 107.1 populations, Rotylenchus, Xiphinema, Aphelenchus in decreasing order. In survey of loss, density of soybean cyst nematode in heavily infested fields was 155 cysts per 100ml soil while 35 cysts in slightly infested fields. Seventy percent of soybean yields was decreased when comparing with average 64.2kg/10a in heavily infested fields and average 209.5kg/10a in slightly infested. Correlation coefficients among number of soybean cyst and yields, pod weight, number of pod was negative as r- 0.57, 0.47, 0.38 over all localities.
