  • In this paper, the optimal maintenance scheduling for turbine with considering maintenance replacement rate was proposed in order to reduce the maintenance cost during the whole period of operation, meanwhile keeping current reliability of turbine. The proposed method is only based on a few limited available data with various factors relating to maintenance replacement and repair of turbine. The proposed method will be adopted by Kyushu Electric Power Co., Inc. from April in 2002 to determine the maintenance schedule of thermal power plants.

  • Installed capacity markets in the northeast of the United States ensure that adequate generation exists to satisfy regional loss of load probability (LOLP) criterion. LOLP studies are conducted to determine the amount of capacity that is needed, but they do not consider several factors that substantially affect the calculated distribution of available capacity. These studies do not account for the fact that generation availability increases during periods of high demand and therefore prices, common-cause failures that result in multiple generation units being unavailable at the same time, and the negative correlation between load and available capacity due to temperature and humidity. A categorization of incidents in an existing bulk power reliability database is proposed to analyze the existence and frequency of independent failures and those associated with resource dynamics. Findings are augmented with other empirical findings. Monte Carlo methods are proposed to model these resource dynamics. Using the IEEE Reliability Test System as a single-bus case study, the LOLP results change substantially when these factors are considered. Better data collection is necessary to support the more comprehensive modeling of resource adequacy that is proposed. In addition, a parallel processing method is used to offset the increase in computational times required to model these dynamics.

  • Photovoltaic(PV) system is one of power generation systems. Solar light in PV system is like the fuel of the car. The quantity of electricity generation, therefore, is fully dependent on the available quantity of solar light on the system of each site. If a utility can predict the solar power generation on a planned site, it may be possible to set up an appropriate PV system there. It may be also possible to objectively evaluate the performances of existing solar systems. Based on the theories of astronomy and meteorology, in this paper, Perez model is simulated to estimate the available quantity of solar lights on the prevailed photovoltaic systems. Consequently the conditions for optimal power generation of each PV system can be analyzed. And the maximum quantity of power generation of each system can be also estimated by applying assumed efficiency of PV system. Perez model is simulated in this paper, and the result is compared with the data of the same model of Meteonorm. Simulated site is Daejeon, Korea with typical meteorological year(TMY) data of 1991~2010.

  • The reliability of power transmission and distribution depends up on the consistency of insulation in the high voltage power transformer. In recent times, considering the drawbacks of conventional mineral oils such as poor biodegradability and poor fire safety level, several research works are being carried out on natural ester based nanofluids. Earlier research works show that sunflower oil has similar dielectric characteristics compared with mineral oil. BIOTEMP oil which is now commercially available in the market for transformers is based on sunflower oil. Addition of nanofillers in the base oil improves the dielectric characteristics of liquid insulation. Only few results are available in the literature about the insulation characteristics of nano modified natural esters. Hence understanding the influence of addition of nanofillers in the dielectric properties of sunflower oil and collecting the database is important. Considering these facts, present work contributes to investigate the important characteristics such as partial discharge, lightning impulse, breakdown strength, tandelta, volume resistivity, viscosity and thermal characteristics of $SiO_2$ nano modified sunflower oil with different wt% concentration of nano filler material varied from 0.01wt% to 0.1wt%. From the obtained results, nano modified sunflower oil shows better performance than virgin sunflower oil and hence it may be a suitable candidate for power transformer applications.

  • This paper presents a new overall system for state-of-available-power (SoAP) prediction for a lithium-ion battery pack. The essential part of this method is based on an adaptive network architecture which utilizes both fuzzy model (FIS) and artificial neural network (ANN) into the framework of adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS). While battery aging proceeds, the system is capable of delivering accurate power prediction not only for room temperature, but also at lower temperatures at which power prediction is most challenging. Due to design property of ANN, the network parameters are adapted on-line to the current battery states (state-of-charge (SoC), state-of-health (SoH), temperature). SoC is required as an input parameter to SoAP module and high accuracy is crucial for a reliable on-line adaptation. Therefore, a reasonable way to determine the battery state variables is proposed applying a combination of several partly different algorithms. Among other SoC boundary estimation methods, robust extended Kalman filter (REKF) for recalibration of amp hour counters was implemented. ANFIS then achieves the SoAP estimation by means of time forward voltage prognosis (TFVP) before a power pulse occurs. The trade-off between computational cost of batch-learning and accuracy during on-line adaptation was optimized resulting in a real-time system with TFVP absolute error less than 1%. The verification was performed on a software-in-the-loop test bench setup using a 53 Ah lithium-ion cell.

  • Cutback control in a grid code is one of the functions of a wind power plant (WPP) that is required to support the system protection and frequency stability. When a cutback control command signal is delivered to the WPP from the system operator, the output of a WPP should be decreased to 20% of the rated power within 5 s. In this paper, we propose a dedicated cutback control algorithm of a WPP based on the ratio of the command power to the available power. If a cutback control signal is delivered, the algorithm determines the pitch angle for the cutback control and starts the pitch angle control. The proposed algorithm keeps the rotor speed at the speed before the start of the cutback control to quickly recover the previous output prior to the cutback control. The performance of the algorithm was validated for a 100 MW aggregated WPP based on a permanent magnet synchronous generator under various wind conditions using an EMTP-RV simulator. The results clearly shows that the proposed algorithm not only successfully reduces the output to the command power within 5 s by minimizing the fluctuation of the pitch angle, but also rapidly recovers to the output level before the cutback control.

  • The recent requirement for faster and more frequent solutions has encouraged the consideration of parallel implementations using decentralized processors. Distributed multi-processor environments can potentially greatly increase the available computational capacity and decrease the communication burden, allowing for faster Optimal Power Flow (OPF) solutions. This paper presents a mathematical approach to implementing distributed OPF using the alternating direction method (ADM) to parallelize the OPF. Several IEEE Reliability Test Systems were adopted to demonstrate the proposed algorithm.
