  • This paper describes a new automatic bi-level image segmentation algorithm which determines local thresholds by applying a locally adaptive edge detection technique to a variable threshold selection method. Computer simulations show that the performance of the proposed algorithm is more robust than those of automatic global thresholding methods.

  • The Heat Anisotropic Diffusion Method has shown very effective for the contour detection of 2-D echocardiogram. To implement this algorithm, we have to choose the parameter C, K, and the threshold level. The choice of C and K are not very sensitive for the good edge detection of the echocardiogram, however the choice of the threshold level is very critical. Until now the threshold level is chosen by the trial and error method. In this paper, we present an automatic threshold decision method from the histogram of the gradient of boundary-like pixels.

Development of machine learning model for automatic ELM-burst detection without hyperparameter adjustment in KSTAR tokamak

  • In this study, a neural network model inspired by a one-dimensional convolution U-net is developed to automatically accelerate edge localized mode (ELM) detection from big diagnostic data of fusion devices and increase the detection accuracy regardless of the hyperparameter setting. This model recognizes the input signal patterns and overcomes the problems of existing detection algorithms, such as the prominence algorithm and those of differential methods with high sensitivity for the threshold and signal intensity. To train the model, 10 sets of discharge radiation data from the KSTAR are used and sliced into 11091 inputs of length 12 ms, of which 20% are used for validation. According to the receiver operating characteristic curves, our model shows a positive prediction rate and a true prediction rate of approximately 90% each, which is comparable to the best detection performance afforded by other algorithms using their optimized hyperparameters. The accurate and automatic ELM-burst detection methodology used in our model can be beneficial for determining plasma properties, such as the ELM frequency from big data measured in multiple experiments using machines from the KSTAR device and ITER. Additionally, it is applicable to feature detection in the time-series data of other engineering fields.

  • Satellite image mosaicking is essential for image interpretation and analysis especially for a large area such as the Korean Peninsula. This paper proposed the technique of automatic seam-line extraction and the method of creating image mosaic in automated fashion. The seam-line to minimize artificial discontinuity was extracted using Minimum Absolute Gray Difference Sum algorithm with constraint condition on search-area width and Canny Edge Detection algorithm. To maintain the radiometric balance among images acquired at different time epochs, we utilized Match Cumulative Frequency method. Experimental results showed that edge detection algorithm extracted the seam-lines significantly well along linear features such as roads and rivers.

  • The present image segmentation is what user want to segment image and has been studied for technology in composition of segment object with other images. In this paper, we propose a method of novel semi-automatic image segmentation using gradual region merging and genetic algorithm. Proposed algorithm is edge detection of object using genetic algorithm after selecting object which user want. We segment region of object which user want to based on detection edge using watershed algorithm. We separated background and object in indefinite region using gradual region merge from Segment object. And, we have applicable value which user want by making interface based on GUI for efficient perform of algorithm development. In the experiments, we analyzed various images for proving superiority of the proposed method.

  • We present an automatic inspection system which been developed to evaluate the geometric tolerances of the optical fiber connectors with an dimensional accuracy of$\pm0.1\mnm$. The main part of the inspection system comprises a series of machine vision and laser scanning probes to measure the internal and external circle diameters along with concentricity by making the most of advanced edge detection algorithms. Actual experimental results obtained through various repeatability tests demonstrate that the system well satisfies the required industrial demands for in-situ inspection of optical fiber connections in real manufacturing environment.

  • The purpose of this paper is to develop an automatic measuring system based on the digital image processing which can be applied to the in-process measurement of the characteristics of the thin thickness. The derivative operators is used for edge detection in gray level image. This concept can be easiliy illustrated with the aid of object shows an image of a simple light object on a dark background, the gray level profile along a horizontal scan line of the image, and the first and second derivatives of the profile. The first derivative of an edge modeled in this manner is () in all regions of constant gray level, and assumes a constant value during a gray level transition. The experimental results indicate that the developed qutomatic inspection system can be applied in real situation.

  • Scene change detection is the fundamental process of automatic video indexing and retrieving. In this paper we propose a method which utilizes both compressed and uncompressed domain methods to detect scene change in a video. Candidate locations for scene change are estimated from DC images and motion vector information in compressed domain. And candidate frames are verified using edge histogram distance and color histogram distance, in uncompressed domain. The experimental results show that scene change can be detected fast and correctly by proposed method.
