  • The primary purpose of this report is to investigate the index of dental caries experiences and the state of oral hygiene for the children with mental retardation, cerebral palsy, and autism. In order to get those things we investigated 99 students that ages from 8 to 13 in three special schools (which are the school for the children with mental retardation, physical difficulties, emotional disturbance). Then collected the statistics and examined if there were some regardful differences among each type. (1) The investigation shows that there is no regardful differences among them in statistice. However, the averages of their dental caries experience have a little gap. The average of the children with mental retardation group is the highest and the autistic children group is the lowest, as we can see the facts of 4.70 for group of children with mental retardation, 4.58 for group of children with cerebral palsy, 3.67 for group of autistic children, children with mental retardation group is severe, autistic children group is few. (2) The conclusion from research of oral hygiene among each type, statistically regardful differences were revealed (p<0.05). It shows children with cerebral palsy is on worst state, children with mental retardation is on next state, autistic children is on best state by compare for averages among each type, 32.30 for group of children with mental retardation 35.00 for group of children with cerebral palsy, 27.79 for autistic children.

  • Children with autistic spectrum disorder(ASD) have a strength in visual process and systemizing, and they show interest toward things and machines. Therefore, robots have been suggested as a useful tool for the rehabilitation of the children with ASD. A robot can attract children's interest and attention, and it can provide simplified social stimulus. A robot can be applied repetitively, and programmed for the special needs of an individual child. In this study, we review literature related to the use of robots for the rehabilitation of children with ASD. For this purpose, related literature was searched with the keywords of autism and robot. We selected eleven domestic papers, and analyzed their contents to identify robots, stimulus of robots, experiment process and dependent variables.

  • This study concerns therapeutic effects and long-term effects of Therapy Dog Assisted Program (TDAP) on autistic children. Subjects participating in this study are two groups of Korean elementary school boys of the same age (twelve years old) : an experimental group and a controlled group of equal number of children (six children in total). The thirteen different sessions of the first intervention and eight different sessions of the second intervention were performed over six months (from April 20th to October 27th, 2000). Two standard instrument (ASIEP, E-CLAC) are used as major instruments in order to evaluate the effectiveness of TDAP. Evidene from the present study indicates that the children participating in TDAP program achieved a greater degree of improvement in their social interaction in comparison with the counterpart. The present study also demonstrates that, in general, the effectiveness of TDAP somewhat decreased after the termination of TDAP with some exceptions. However we also found that the effectiveness of TDAP were maintained in the some behavioral area such as bowing to teacher, play for cooperation with peers, which activities were sufficiently offered TDAP to the children. The questions of possible influence of parental support and other family background of each individual autistic child on the effect and long-term effect of TDAP need to be addressed in future study.

  • Autism is characterized with an abnormality of reciprocal social relatedness and of communication development. Also, autistic children show repetitive and stereotypical behavior pattern and deficiency of endurance against change. Dental problems related to autism are self-injury and trauma from accidents. Sometimes self-injury is due to discomfort resulting from restoration and local anesthesia. Also, gingivitis and multiple caries are common because of poor oral hygiene. Autistic children are anxious about visual and auditory stimuli because they don't understand the dental procedure. If the face of any changes in their daily life, their behavior becomes uncontrollable. In a setting such as the outpatient office, an autistic child's uncontrollable behavior makes it difficult to carry out proper treatment. If they need treatment under general anesthesia, it is very difficult to manage them in a ward as they are severly anxious about being admitted to a hospital. Therefore it is necessary to treat these children according to a specific management program under general anesthesia in an outpatient office. This case study reports of a 14 year old autistic teenager who although became uncontrollable because of the pain from multiple caries and from anxiety of the dental treatment eventually received treatment under general anesthesia and under conscious sedation in an outpatient office.

  • To find some involvement of environmental factors in autism, season of birth, birth order, and maternal age at birth of autistic children were investigated Total number of clinical outpatient autistic children was 357, which consisted of 319 male and 38 female, then male-to-female sex ratio was 8.4 to 1, and all subjects were born during $1986{\sim}1988.$ These data were compared with those of controlled general populations. The results were as follows : 1) In monthly and seasonal distributions of birth, autistic children were not different from normal control 2) Comparing with control group by Slater's and Greenwood-Yule's birth order calculation methods, there was no significant difference in birth order of autistic children 3) The maternal ages at birth in autistic group were significantly higher than those of control group(P<01) 4) High-risk pregnancies were significantly frequent in autistic group compared with control group(p<01)Our study supported the idea that at least some environmental factors, especially at-risk pregnancy, are involved in autism causation.

  • This study was investigated the effect of antioxidative vitamin supplementation ($\beta$-carotene 175 mg, vitamin C 200 mg, vitamin E 33.5 mg) for 12 weeks on antioxidant status and autistic related behaviors in autistic children. The antioxidative vitamin-supplemented children had significantly lower concentrations of toxic mineral, such as cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg) and lead (Pb) in hair, while they had higher concentration of antioxidant minerals (Se, Zn, Fe) in hair. Antioxidant vitamin supplementation for 12 weeks reduced free radical while it increased the hair levels of serotonin compared to the beginning of the study. Additionally, antioxidative vitamin supplementation resulted in significant improvement in social age. These results indicate that the consumption of antioxidative vitamin supplementation for 12 weeks in autistic children may increase plasma antioxidant mineral concentration, resulting in reduced toxic mineral and free radical and improved autistic behavior.

  • A VR-Tangible Interaction therapy system for autistic children has been designed and implemented. The purpose of this system is to provide a virtual interactive experience for autistic children to check their performances in various tasks and to provide them with the effect of a medical treatment. An interdisciplinary study was deployed by a group of designers, doctors, psychologists and engineers. 14 interaction scenarios were designed and developed. Scenarios include such tasks as to guess a person's feeling by watching his facial expressions, to choose what a person is gazing at, and to pop virtual balloons with a stick. A prototype system was developed and a pilot study made with 11 autistic children. The test showed that autistic children easily understood and enjoyed the virtual environment, and promising theraphy results were also found.

  • The effects of the Attachment Promotion Therapy (APT) program for the autistic children were reviewed by 8 papers. The program was consisted with play activity centered mother-child interaction, educational activity for parents, lecture, video-feedback, and support. APT program was effective to improve the attachment behaviors and attachment security. And the mother's behaviors to her child became more child-centered, positively responsive, expressive supportively. Ninety six point seven percent of the mothers were satisfied with the APT program. They described that it was helpful to understand their children's developmental limitation and strength, to learn how to play with their children, to make supportive social network among the mothers, to minimize familial conflicts, and to make them much more comfortable with their children. They thought the APT Program was to be a steppingstone of the further educational program. APT program is an effective early intervention to promote social development and decrease autistic problems.

  • 25 young autistic children were examined in Ainsworth’s Strange Situation. The attachment security of 21 children could be classified. Almost half(44%) of these children were securely attached. The relationship between attachment security and developmental variables(chronological age, social quotient, severity of symptom) was investigated. There were no significant differences on CA, social quotient, and severity of symptom between secure attachment group and insecure attachment group. Although autistic children have social deficits, they develop secure attachment to their mothers.

  • As the children with Autistic Spectrum Disorders(ASD) are increasing, and study of intelligent robot is dynamically proceeding, therapeutic robots are needed to help ASD children who have a lack of social interaction, inadequacy of communication. This paper deals with the design and operation of a cat robot for the treatment. To configure the behavior based on the results of field experiments, emotional treatment is suggested and robot structure considering ASD characteristic is designed with some sensors. In addition, we verified the effectiveness of the operation by field test.
