This study of nurse educator's attitudes which found aspects of professional nursing was carried out from September 10 to 30, 1977. Subjects were 205 respondents from a total population of 314 nurse educators from the level of instructors to professors in all the diploma (post high school 3 year), professional junior college (3 year level) and university (4 year) nursing schools in Korea. Specific objectives were to determine their attitudes about the 1. social position of nursing as a profession, 2. nurses attitudes towards their word, 3. factors influencing the development of nursing, 4. the future of nursing, 5. nursing educational problems, 6. their own educational position's intrinsic job satisfaction and 7. their salary and benefits. The instrument used was a questionnaire developed from consultations with nursing educators and sociologists, and based on earlier. worts by Burke (1976), Mason (1974) and Hong 1969. Data were analysis by computer using one-way analysis. Statistically significant findings included the following; 1. Responses were positive toward all seven aspects of professional nursing. 2. Compared to diploma nursing school staff whose responses were positive, professional and university school faculty response toward the social position of nursing were neutral. 3. Faculty with clinical experience of 10 to 19 years were most positive in their responses about nurses' attitudes towards their work. In all three types of schools, in comparison to professors, associate professors' responses were more positive about nurses' attitudes toward their work. Faculty with longer clinical experience expressed high agreement with statements about factors which influence the development of nursing. Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the dental hygiene students and professors' knowledge and attitudes related to medical ethics and their level of perception of professional ethics education. Methods: This was a cross-sectional survey study of 330 students and professors in the field of dental hygiene using a structured questionnaire. The sub-factors of knowledge and attitudes related to medical ethics were classified into patient relations, medical and social relations, and individual specialized fields, and analyzed for comparison. Results: In the university curriculum, the professional ethics completion rate was 34.8% for students and 22.1% for professors, but 98.5% of respondents said that professional ethics is important. Their knowledge and attitudes related to medical ethics were average, ranging from 5 points to 3.37 points, followed by "relationships with patients (3.75 points)", "medical and social relations (3.19 points)", and "individual specialties (3.16 points)." Conclusions: Students and professors who major in dental hygiene recognize the importance of professional ethics, but the level of knowledge and attitude related to medical ethics has been found to be moderate. Therefore, it is suggested that medical ethics, including professional ethics, should be treated as an essential subject in the university curriculum.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to contribute to the development of standard curriculum on oral health intervention on dementia patients for dental hygienists and dental hygiene professors by identifying the extent of knowledge, attitudes and educational needs on dementia among dental hygienists and dental hygiene professors. Methods: We performed survey to dental hygienists and dental hygiene professors for about 2 months from April to May, 2018. Among them, 325 copies were used for final analysis. Frequencies and percentages were calculated to identify general characteristics of respondents and their dementia-related characteristics, and means and standard deviations were calculated to find out the extent of knowledge, attitudes, and educational needs on dementia among subjects. Multiple regression analysis was performed to investigate the effects on the educational needs on dementia. Results: The analysis on the factors that affect the dementia education needs of the subjects showed that the dementia education necessity (p<0.001) and the dementia attitude (p<0.001) had statistically significant effects on the educational needs on dementia. Conclusions: As a result, dental hygienists who are responsible for oral health intervention of dementia patients need to have proper knowledge about dementia and positive attitude toward dementia patients, so professional education is needed to improve knowledge and positive attitude. This will provide a basis for the dental hygienists to be equipped with the relevant expertise in the intervention in the oral health of dementia patients in the future.
The present study was carried out to investigate gender-related attitudes of professors in engineering as a socio-environmental factor for career barriers of female engineering students. For this purpose, 220 professors, 169 in engineering and 51 in non-engineering, completed questionnaires that evaluated gender-related knowledge, behavior, and career expectations. Our results showed that both engineering and non-engineering professors showed a low level of knowledge of gender differences. Both groups selected soft skills such as leadership, initiative and self efficacy as lacking in female students, rather than their academic skills. Professors in engineering showed higher expectations of female students pursuing a career in engineering but lower expectations for working on core projects and taking leadership at the workplace than the professors in non-engineering. The level of gender-sensitivity related to teaching was lower for professors in engineering than those in non-engineering, although professors in engineering evaluated their gender sensitivity higher than the evaluation of their female students. In addition, professors in engineering opted less for developing programs for female student career development in engineering than professors in non-engineering, and they showed a low interest level in participating in such programs. This study showed that the efforts to make engineering professors aware of the characteristics of female students should precede the development of education programs.
The purpose of this study is to understand various theories of cognitions of mathematics and to compare the difference between students in mathematics education and professors who teach them in their cognition of mathematics. For this purpose, a survey of 'cognitions of mathematics' was done to the students(future teachers) and professors who taught them in the capital area, and the results was statistically analyzed. It shows that professors have almost all of things in common with students in their cognitions of mathematics except some issues such as 'there are usually more than one way to solve mathematical tasks and problems,' or 'It is indispensible for mathematics to be definitional rigor,' which are statistically significant. Many theoretical and empirical grounds were supported for the differences in their responses. The study has, eventually, given valuable suggestions to lead people's attitudes and cognitions of mathematics to a deeper level.
This study introduces the peer class consulting program at K-Institute of Technology aimed at improving class quality through the diagnosis of professors' teaching methods, analysis of the pros and cons, and assessment of their class management ability. To carry out the program, 641 students taking classes with the professors were surveyed on their satisfaction and learning motivation levels. The class composition was analyzed by monitoring the professor's class. The effect of the consulting was verified by comparing students' class satisfaction scores before and after consulting. Additionally, 29 professors subject to the consulting were surveyed on their satisfaction with the program. According to the results, professors subject to the consulting recognized that the teaching methods and class management strategies presented through the consulting effectively improved student satisfaction and motivation and provided an opportunity to gain confidence through the class. Furthermore, professors subject to the consulting were able to acquire knowledge, skills, and attitudes related to class management, and they perceived the program positively, stating that it allowed them to quickly adapt to the university education environment through cooperative communication with senior professors serving as consultants.
The study explores the way professors working in a private university in Korea perceive the recent English-medium instruction (EMI) frenzy in Korean higher education (HE) and the way they respond to its manifestation at their institution. Working within a qualitative research paradigm (Merriam, 2009), I gathered data primarily via one-time semi-structured interviews with ten participants who have offered or are offering EMI at the time of data collection and used a qualitative data analysis method. The findings illustrate that the professors view external factors residing outside individual universities, such as the college rankings and the university evaluation parameters, as the principal drive behind the current EMI boom in Korean tertiary education. Acknowledging the importance of strengthening the international competitive edge of Korean HE in the global era, the professors perceive the EMI policy positively expecting it to be beneficial for both students and institutions. They, however, problematize the blind acceptance of EMI policy and externally forced EMI expansion movement in Korean HE, which they believe will lower the standard of the academic experience of students. Experiencing first-hand the inadequate manifestation of the EMI policy at their university, the professors claim that a systematic long-term implementation plan and context-suitable approaches should be taken at both the national and institutional level for successful future EMI implementation and expansion efforts.
Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the experiences and awareness of Korean Medicine professors towards research ethics issues and curriculum development. Methods: Electronic mails for requesting the survey participation were sent to 531 professors who were listed in the DB of Association of Korean Medicine. Professors who agreed to participate in the survey were connected to the self-administered questionnaire site, and the responses were stored in real time. Professors were asked the experience of research misconduct cases, the necessity, contents and evaluation method of research ethics education, etc. ANOVA was performed to test the differences of ethics education effects among sub-groups of respondents. Results: Of 137 professors who opened the e-mail, 127 completed the questionnaire. Most professors (87.4%) reported to witness the research misconduct cases, and felt the necessity of research ethics education for professors as well as students. 31.4% of respondents preferred the practice-focused course, and 43.3% preferred the PASS/FAIL basis evaluation system. Professors with shorter education career and professors majoring basic Korean Medicine expected higher effect of ethics education than others. For detailed items of research ethics education, 'ethical writing' and 'ensuring research integrity' were prioritized in the aspects of both personal ethics and social demand. Conclusions: In this study, detailed matters of research ethics education in Korean Medicine area were drawn. Further study and policy development are needed to facilitate the introduction of formal education of research ethics.
The purposes of this article are to analyze the conditions of using instructional strategies and using gender sensitive instructional strategies at engineering classes of K University. Qualitative analysis methods were adapted. To achieve the purposes, 35 hours of engineering classes from 11 professors from 9th to 20th of November 2009 were videotaped and analyzed. The research findings were discussed by the checklists for general and gender sensitive the instructional strategies which were recommended for the managing the better classes. Students are influenced by professors not only knowledge and skills but also values and attitudes. Professors who take gender sensitive instructional strategies are expected to give good influence the women students.
In order to investigate if nutrition-related TV programs give the public correct and useful imformation, 26 producers(PD) having worked for any one of the nutirtion-related TV programs were surveyed by using questionnaire on the attitudes toward seeking an expert's advice about the issues and the panelist's constitution of one typical nutrition-related TV show program broadcasted during the last 5 years was analyzed. The most important reason for selecting the nutrition-related issues was to satisfy the interests and demands of audiences. Both being motivated by food-related accidents and to educate people for the health promotion were the second ones. In the process of nutrition-related program production, 53.9% of PDs always requested expert's advice, while 46.1% occasionally did. Professors in food and nutrition were regarded as the most proper advisor. Dietitians, physicians and physicians of Chinese medicine wer the next in order. The similar pattern were shown in the rankd of specialists actually invited as panelists to the program. Both the speciality and being well-known were less positive and favorable for participating in the program compared to experts in other areas. The number of programs about food and nutrition broadcasted on the TV show during 1993-1997(July) was 361(about 30%). The total of 1,043 specialists appeared, 2.9 persons per program on the average. Of these, only 12.9% were professors in food and nutrition as well as dietitians. The largest(20.2%) was physicians or medical professors, and 13.6% cooks and 12.6% physicians of Chinese medicine. Of 361 programs 45 were thought to be undesirable on the panelist constitution. Particualrly in 19 programs, where nutritionists were not invited, physicians or physicians of Chinese medicine explained diet therapy, food, nutrient or dietary habit.
