  • Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate the influence of elderly-related experience on attitude toward elderly in dental hygiene students. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 213 dental hygiene students in Suwon from November 21 to 30, 2012. The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics of the subjects, elderly-related experience, knowledge on elderly, and attitude toward elderly by Likert 7 points scale. The instrument for knowledge on elderly was adapted from facts on aging quiz-I by Palmore and modified by Kim et al. Data were analyzed by t test, one way ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis using SPSS 21.0 program. Results: The attitude toward the elderly was $2.79{\pm}0.42$. The elderly-related experience had a positive influence on the attitude toward elderly(p=0.019) according to the level of experiencing the elderly(r=0.161, p<0.05). The influence of elderly-related experience on attitude toward the elderly showed that an experiencing variable is key factor in predicted variable of the attitude toward the elderly(${\beta}$=0.177 p=0.015). Conclusions: Elderly-related experience had an effect on positive attitude toward the elderly people in the dental hygiene students. It is necessary to develop and implement the education program for the exact knowledge and attitude toward the elderly.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine generational differences between the youth and the middle-aged in attitude and voluntary behavior toward the elderly, to analyze the socio-demographic and psychological characteristics influencing attitude and behavior toward the elderly, and to find out whether the attitude of the youth and the middle-aged toward the elderly was the decisive factor in their behavior toward them. For this study, we surveyed 252 youth (between the ages of 20 and 30) and 314 middle-aged people (between the ages of 40 and 60). The major results were as follows: First, the psychological factor had a stronger influence on the positive attitude toward the elderly than did the socio-demographic factor. The psychological factor had an especially significant impact on the attitude of the middle-aged population. Second, youths' attitude toward the elderly influenced their behavior toward them; whereas, for the middle-aged, the socio-demographic characteristic was a decisive factor. Third, the youths' area of residence was an important factor in their attitude toward the elderly; the youth in the metropolitan area had a more negative attitude than did their counterpart. Therefore, it is necessary to develop programs to improve the negative attitude toward the elderly for the youth residing in the metropolitan area. The middle-aged need more easily accessible voluntary work programs by which a positive attitude toward the elderly leads to immediate action.

  • The purpose of this study is to measure the home helpers' knowledge about facts on aging and attitude toward the elderly in Korea, and to find out the variables that may influence their attitude. Four hundred and thirty eight home helpers working in a home help agency were given the questionnaire containing the Kyung San Facts on Aging Quiz to measure the level of knowledge about aging and Yoon (1988)'s scale to find the direction of attitude toward the elderly. The results of this study are analyzed as follows: (1) The home helpers' level of knowledge about aging was 59.1%, which was lower than nurses' level (65.0%) and social workers' level (65.3%). And the paid home helpers' level of knowledge about aging was 61.2%, which was significantly different from the unpaid home helpers' level (57.0%). (2) Using 5 points scale, mean of home helpers' attitude toward the elderly was 2.56 (51.2%), which was different from nurses' attitude (40.6%) and social workers' attitude (62.0%). And the paid home helpers' attitude toward the elderly's action (29.9%) was significantly different from the unpaid home helpers' attitude (32.6%). (3) Using multiple regression analysis, the home helpers' levels of knowledge about aging was the most significant predictor to explain the home helpers' attitude toward the elderly. The other variables that are also statistically significant predictors of the home helpers' attitude were sex, voluntary experience for the elderly, age, city size, and personal experience with the elderly. Especially the significant predictors to explain the paid home helpers' attitude were their levels of knowledge about aging and city size. On the other hand, the significant predictors to explain the unpaid home helpers' attitude were sex and age. Based on the research results, implications for practice and future research are discussed, and education methods for making home helpers' attitude toward the elderly more positive are also suggested.
