The Mediating Effect of Social Support on the Relationship between Adult Attachment and the Subjective Happiness of University Students (성인애착과 대학생의 주관적 행복감 간의 관계에서 사회적지지의 매개효과)

  • This study examines the relationship of adult attachment, social support, and subjective happiness of university students, and confirm the mediating effect of social support in the relationship between adult attachment and subjective happiness. Participants in this study consist of 284 university students enrolled in G city. Data were analyzed using SPSS and AMOS to conduct descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and a structural equation model. The main findings are as follows. First, Attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance showed negative correlations with social support and subjective happiness. And social support showed a positive correlation with subjective happiness. Second, social support showed a partial mediating effect on the effect of attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance on the subjective happiness of university students. This study is meaningful in providing basic data for educational and counseling interventions that enhance subjective happiness of university students.

Determining the Relationship among Organizational Commitment, Occupational Stress, and Interpersonal Relations according to Adult Attachment Styles of Clinical Dental Hygienists

  • Background: This study aimed to identify the types of adult attachment and determine the relationship between adult attachment and job factors in dental hygienists. Ultimately, it was necessary to identify the need for a secure attachment to improve the quality of clinical dental hygienist's services. Methods: Data of 454 clinical dental hygienists working in dental hospitals or clinics were collected. The research tools consisted of items related to the general and work characteristics of dental hygienists (9 items), adult attachment styles (36 items), organizational commitments (12 items), occupational stress (15 items), and interpersonal relations (18 items). Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ of each tool was ${\geq}0.7$. Results: Most of the participants had fearful attachment styles, followed by dismissing-avoidance, security, and preoccupation. Security was the highest level of organizational commitment according to the adult attachment style, although the differences of the levels were insignificant. For occupational stress, preoccupation was the highest, followed by fearful, security, and dismissing-avoidance, and the differences were significant (p<0.001). For interpersonal relations, security was the highest, followed by preoccupation, dismissing-avoidance, and fearful in order, and the differences were significant (p<0.001). Conclusion: Job stress and interpersonal relation ability according to the adult attachment style of clinical dental hygienists had significant results. Thus, the development of attachment improvement programs by personal style, development of differentiated clinical education and its application, and improvements in the adult attachment styles of clinical dental hygienists would be required rather than simply presenting the needs to collectively improvement the working environment.

The Effects of Adult Attachment and Self-Differentiation on Clinical Competency of Nursing Students (성인애착과 자아분화가 간호대학생의 임상수행능력에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to understand the relationship between the clinical competency of nursing students and their adult attachment and self-differentiation of nursing students. Data collection was conducted from the third and fourth grade students who had experienced clinical practice in a nursing university at Daejeon, Chungcheong province in two nursing universities at Daejeon and Chungcheong province. Finally, 169 out of initial 200 questionnaires were used for analysis. The collected data were analyzed through descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation effectiveness, and stepwise multiple regression using the SPSS Statistics 22 Windows program. Attachment avoidance in adult attachment was significantly correlated with self-differentiation (r=-240, p=.002) and clinical competency (r=-.237, p=.002). Clinical competency was significantly correlated with attachment avoidance (r=-.237, p=.002) and self-differentiation (r=.248, p=.001). The result of stepwise multiple regression indicates that self-differentiation and attachment avoidance (F=8.707, p<.001) predicts 8.4% in clinical competency. The most powerful predictor was self-differentiation (${\beta}=.203$, p=.008), followed by attachment avoidance (${\beta}=.188$, p=.0015). Therefore, in order to improve the clinical competency of nursing college students, it is deemed necessary to develop and apply educational and counseling programs capable of increasing their level of self-differentiation while decreasing their degree of attachment avoidance.

Emotion Regulation Style and Parent Attachment : Effects on Adolescents' Satisfaction with Life (정서조절 양식과 부모 애착이 청소년의 생활만족에 미치는 영향)

  • Subjects were 2192 middle and high school students of Seoul and Kyonggi Province. Data, consisting of a self-report questionnaire, were analyzed by two-way ANOVA, univariate F-test and stepwise multiple regression. Findings were that boys showed more avoidance/distraction and active problem solving styles but less support seeking than girls. Older adolescents reported less parent attachment than younger adolescents; girls reported more mother attachment than boys. Older adolescents reported more life satisfaction than younger adolescents; girls reported more life satisfaction than boys. A higher degree of life satisfaction was reported by subjects with more parent attachment, more active problem solving and less avoidance/distraction styles, by younger adolescents, and by girls. Degree of parent attachment was the most powerful predictor of adolescents' satisfaction with life.

The Relationship between Insecure Adult Attachment and Emotion Dysregulation : The Mediation Effect of Mentalization (불안정 성인애착과 정서조절곤란 간의 관계 :정신화의 매개효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to verify the mediating effect of mentalization in the relationship between insecure adult attachment and emotion dysregulation. A total of 468 data were collected by requesting a survey to an online research company. The collected data were subjected to descriptive statistics and hierarchical regression analysis using SPSS 25.0. The Sobel test was conducted to verify the mediating effect of mentalization. The research results are as follows. First, there was a significant correlation between attachment anxiety, attachment avoidance, mentalization, and emotion dysregulation. Second, the mediating effect of mentalization in the relationship between attachment anxiety and emotion dysregulation was found to be significant, and a partial mediating effect was found. Third, the mediating effect of mentalization in the relationship between attachment avoidance and emotion dysregulation was found to be significant and a partial mediating effect was found. Through the results of this study, the relationship between insecure adult attachment and emotion dysregulation was confirmed, and the role of mentalization in the relationship between them was also confirmed.

The Relationship between Adult Attachment and Interpersonal Relationship Competence of College Students: The Mediating Effect of Cognitive Emotion Regulation Strategies (대학생의 성인애착과 대인관계능력의 관계: 인지적 정서조절 전략의 매개효과)

  • The primary purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effect of cognitive emotion regulation strategies in the relationship between adult attachment and interpersonal relationship competence. To achieve the purpose of the study, college students from nationwide completed the questionnaire and analyzed 326 valid ones. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation analysis, and structural equation model were performed using SPSS 22.0 and AMOS 23.0. The results are as follows. First, adult attachment(attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance) were negatively correlated with interpersonal relationship competence. Also, attachment avoidance was significantly influenced on interpersonal relationship competence than attachment anxiety. Second, in the relationship between adult attachment and interpersonal relationship competence, attachment anxiety was fully mediated and attachment avoidance was partially mediated with cognitive emotion regulation strategies. Attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance mediated with adaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies. Based on these results, we verified the importance and the possibility of changing the cognitive emotion regulation for increasing the level of interpersonal relationship competence. Finally, this study may provide an insight in terms of developing education and programs of adaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies in counseling session.

Adult attachment style and related variables: Focused on internal working models of housewives (성인의 애착양식과 관련변인에 관한 연구: 전업주부의 내적 표상을 중심으로)

  • this study examined the correlates of adult attachment focused on internal working models of 201 housewives. Findings indicated that 68.3% of subjects were classified as secure whereas 27.5% as avoidant and 4.2% as anxious. Greater security was associated with slightly less avoidance while greater anxiousness was associated with slightly greater avoidance. That is subjects who possessed more security tended to be less avoidant while subjects who possessed more anxiousness tended to be more avoidant. The primary characteristics classifying subjects into those three attachment styles were feelings about closeness dependence and anxiousness in relationships with others. Adult attachment was related in theoretically expected ways to one's history of attachment and parenting. Secure subjects were more likely to report warm/responsive parental caregiving style than insecure styles. Insecure subjects in comparison with secure subjects perceived their mothers as cold inconsistent and ot very responsive. Anxious subjects dscribed their fathers as cold and rejecting. The secure attachment style in comparsion with insecure styles was associated with positive mental models of self and social world indicating greater self-esteem positive beliefs about self and others positive relationships with their children greater marital satisfaction and greater secure attachment to their husbands. These results suggest that internal working model offers a useful perspective on adult attachment.

Romantic Attachment, Self-esteem and Love Attitudes (낭만적 애착과 자아존중감 및 사랑유형의 관계)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship among romantic attachment, self-esteem, and love attitudes as perceived by college students(male:149, female:202) in the Seoul and Gyeonggi areas. All respondents submitted their answers on a self-report questionnaire. The measurement instruments were Brennan, Clark, & Shaver'(1998) 'Multi-item Measure of Adult Romantic Attachment', Rosenberg'(1979) Self-esteem Scale, and Hendrick, Hendrick, & Dicke'(1998) 'Love Attitudes Scale'. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-tests, Pearson's correlations, and multiple regressions. Major results of this study were as follows: (a) In romantic attachment and self-esteem, sex was not a significant factor. In the love attitudes, sex was significant, and men showed higher levels of Eros and Agape than women. Women showed higher levels of Plasma than men. (b) Romantic attachment(avoidance and anxiety dimensions) were negatively correlated to self-esteem. (c) The avoidance dimension of romantic attachment was negatively correlated to Eros, Mania, and Agape and positively Ludus. The anxiety dimension of romantic attachment was positively correlated to Ludus, Plasma, Mania, and Agape. (d) Self-esteem was negatively correlated to Mania and positively correlated to Eros and Pragma.

Effects of Adolescent Temperament and Parent-child Attachment on Depression (청소년의 기질, 부모 애착과 우울)

  • Purpose: This study was done to examine levels of temperament, parent-child attachment and depression of adolescents and verify its effects. Methods: Surveys were conducted with 500 students from two middle schools, one located in Seoul and one in Gyeonggi Province. Adolescent temperament was measured using the Junior Temperament and Character Inventory, parent-child attachment using the Revised Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment and depression using the Children's Depression Inventory. Cluster, t-test, correlation and logistic regression were used for data analysis. Results: Characteristics of temperament were classified into 2 groups. The 'Adaptation vulnerable group' showed high Harm Avoidance and the 'Adaptation protective group' showed high Reward Dependence, and Patience. The 'Adaptation vulnerable group' showed lower attachment and higher depression than the 'Adaptation protective group'. Novelty Seeking and Harm Avoidance correlated positively with depression and negatively with attachment. Students with higher levels of attachment reported lower levels of depression. The logistic regression analysis showed that the 'Adaptation vulnerable group' was 2.16 times more likely to be affected by depression than 'Adaptation protective group'. Conclusion: Results of this study can be used to develop depression intervention programs for adolescent psychological health and provide encouragement in the development of parent-child attachment.
