This study developed a safety assessment tool for geological disposal systems called APro, a systemically integrated modeling system based on modularizing and coupling the processes which need to be considered in a geological disposal system. Thermal, hydraulic, chemical, canister failure, radionuclide release and transport processes were considered in the current version of APro. Each of the unit processes in APro consists of a single Default Module, and several Alternative Modules which can increase the flexibility of the model. As an initial stage of developing the modularization concept and modeling interface, the Default Modules of each unit process were described, with one Alternative Module of chemical process. The computation part of APro is mainly a MATLAB workspace controlling COMSOL and PHREEQC, which are coupled by an operator splitting scheme. The APro model domain is a stylized geological disposal system employing the Swedish disposal concept (KBS-3 type), but the repository layout can be freely adjusted. In order to show the applicability of APro to the total system performance assessment of geological disposal system, some sample simulations were conducted. From the results, it was confirmed that coupling of the thermal and hydraulic processes and coupling of the canister failure and the radionuclide release processes were well reflected in APro. In addition, the technical connectivity between COMSOL and PHREEQC was also confirmed.
DUPIC (Direct Use of spent PWR fuel In CANDU) fuel cycle technology is being developed at Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI). All the DUPIC fuel fabrication processes are remotely conducted in the completely shielded M6 hot-cell located in the Irradiated Material Examination Facility (IMEF) at KAERI. Undesirable products such as spent nuclear fuel powder debris and contaminated wastes are inevitably created during the DUPIC nuclear fuel fabrication processes.(omitted)

The head-end processes of spent TRISO fuel have been reviewed to understand the current status and the limitations of the reported processes. The main concerns in the TRISO treatment are to effectively breach and separate the carbon and SiC layers composing the TRISO particles. The crush-bum scheme which was considered in the early stages of the development has been replaced by the crush-leach or $CO_2$ burning and the succeeding CO decomposition process because of a sequestration problem of $CO_2$ containing $^{14}C$. However there are still many obstacles to overcome in the reported processes. Hence, innovative thermomechanical and pyrochemical concepts to breach the coating layers of the TRISO particle with a minimized amount of second waste are proposed in this paper and their principles are described in detail.
Pyroprocessing technology was developed in the beginning for metal fuel treatment in the US in the 1960s. The conventional aqueous process, such as PUREX, is not appropriate for treating metal fuel. Pyroprocessing technology has advantages over the aqueous process: less proliferation risk, treatment of spent fuel with relatively high heat and radioactivity, compact equipment, etc. The addition of an oxide reduction process to the pyroprocessing metal fuel treatment enables handling of oxide spent fuel, which draws a potential option for the management of spent fuel from the PWR. In this context, KAERI has been developing pyroprocessing technology to handle the oxide spent fuel since the 1990s. This paper describes the current status of pyroprocessing technology development at KAERI from the head-end process to the waste treatment. A unit process with various scales has been tested to produce the design data associated with the scale up. A performance test of unit processes integration will be conducted at the PRIDE facility, which will be constructed by early 2012. The PRIDE facility incorporates the unit processes all together in a cell with an Ar environment. The purpose of PRIDE is to test the processes for unit process performance, operability by remote equipment, the integrity of the unit processes, process monitoring, Ar environment system operation, and safeguards related activities. The test of PRIDE will be promising for further pyroprocessing technology development.

The 3D simulations for the Rotary Specimen Rack (RSR), the shielding concret, and the reactor core dismantling processes in the Korea Research Reactor-1&2(KRR-1&2) were carried out in the present work. The four main dismantling items, which are the RSR, reactor core, beam tube, and the thermal column and the shield concrete, were selected among the many components in the KRR-2 by consideration of the activation, worker training, difficulty of the work and so on. On the basis of these, we built 3D CAD models, selected the proper dismantling technologies, and reviewed their dismantling processes. In this study, the 3D simulation results of the shielding concrete, and the reactor core dismantling processes are also presented and discussed.

Pyroprocessing uses various molten salts during electrochemical unit processes. Reaction products after the electrochemical processes must contain a significant amount of residual salts to be separated. Vacuum distillation is a common method to separate the residual salts; however, its high operation temperature may cause side reactions. In this study, a simple rotation technique using centrifugal force was suggested to separate the residual salts from the reaction products at relatively low temperature compared to the distillation technique. When a reaction product container with porous wall rotates inside a vessel heated above the melting point of the residual salt, the residual salt in the liquid phase is separated through centrifugal force. It was shown that the $LiNO_3-Al_2O_3$ mixture can be separated by this technique to leave solid $Al_2O_3$ inside the container, with a separation efficiency of 99.4%.
The Pyro project, one of the large national R&D project to construct Korea Advanced Pyroprocessing Facility (KAPF), which has many goals such as development of pyro technology and process equipment, design of equipment and facility, construction, and test operation, is now under research and development. To reduce uncertainty and risk of such complex project, the technical management processes in systems engineering standards and NASA handbook were reviewed, and then the ten common technical management processes were selected for the large national R&D project to meet its goal successfully. And the essential technical management processes were finally suggested for Pyro project in consideration of current situation of the project.

Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe, which is, in the cosmological context, attributed to its simplest structure consisting of a proton and an electron. Hydrogen interacts with an electromagnetic wave in astrophysical environments. Rayleigh scattering refers to elastic scattering, where the frequencies of the incident and scattered photons are the same. Rayleigh and resonance scattering is a critical role study Lyman Alpha objects in the early universe. The scattering causes the frequency and spatial diffusion of Lyα. In the case of Raman scattering, the energies of the incident and scattered photons are different. The photons near Lyβ convert to the optical photons near Hα through Raman scattering. The photon scattered by atomic hydrogen can carry both of the properties of the H I region and the emission region. I adopt a Monte Carlo approach to investigate the formation of the various spectral line features through Rayleigh and Raman scattering in highly thick media of atomic hydrogen. In this thesis, I present my works on radiative transfer involving the scattering processes between far UV photon and atomic hydrogen. I introduce scattering processes with atomic hydrogen and the spectral, spatial, and polarized information originating from the scattering.
