  • In this paper we compare the solution of the one-dimensional beam model and the numerical solution of the two-dimensional linearized elasticity problem for rectangular domain of the beam-like form. We first derive the beam model starting from the two-dimensional linearized elasticity, the same way it is derived from the three-dimensional linearized elasticity. Then we present the numerical solution of the two-dimensional problem by finite element method. As expected the difference of two approximations becomes smaller as the thickness of the beam tends to zero. We then analyze the applicability of the one-dimensional model and verify the main properties of the beam modeling for thin beams.

  • The flow characteristics on the centerline in case of free jet, sudden expansion jet and impinging jet have been investigated. Centerline flow behaviors and similaritis with mean velocities, turbulent intensities, shear stresses, isotropic structures and turbulent kinetic energies on the streamwise direction were looked into and compared with three jets, The results show that mean velocities have represented potential core and decayed with similar gradients. The turbulent intensities and shear stresses were presented peak values in the self-preserving region, and then they were in decay. Aeolotropy in the initial region were possible returned to isotropy patterns with asymptotic approach in the downstream region. It has been found that the turbulent kinetic energies for the three cases of jet existed in the similarity and they coincided with Gaussian profile.

  • The problem of predicting the fracture strength behavior in orthotropic plate with a crack inclined with respect to the principal material axes is analyzed. Both the load to cause fracture and the crack direction of crack growth arc of interest. The theoretical results based on the normal stress ration theory show significant effects of biaxial loading and the fiber orientation on the crack growth angle and the critical stress. The additional term in the asymptotic expansion of the crack tip stress field appears to provide more accurate critical stress prediction.

  • A study on the sloshing flow of highly-viscous fluid in a rectangular box was made by both of theoretical approach and experimental visualization method. Assuming a smallness of external forcing to oscillate the container, it was investigated a linear sloshing flow of highly-viscous fluid utilizing asymptotic analysis by Taylor-series expansion as a small parameter Re (≪1) in which Re denotes Reynolds number. The theory predict that, during all cycles of sloshing, a linear shape of free surface will prevail in a bulk zone and it has confirmed in experiment. The relevance of perfect slip boundary condition, adopted in theoretical approach, to the bulk zone flow at the container wall was tested in experiment. It is found that quasi-steady coated thin film, which makes a lubricant layer between bulk flow and solid wall, is generated on the wall and the film makes a role to perfect slip boundary condition.

  • This article deals with the pricing of Asian options under a constant elasticity of variance (CEV) model as well as a stochastic elasticity of variance (SEV) model. The CEV and SEV models are underlying asset price models proposed to overcome shortcomings of the constant volatility model. In particular, the SEV model is attractive because it can characterize the feature of volatility in risky situation such as the global financial crisis both quantitatively and qualitatively. We use an asymptotic expansion method to approximate the no-arbitrage price of an arithmetic average Asian option under both CEV and SEV models. Subsequently, the zero and non-zero constant leverage effects as well as stochastic leverage effects are compared with each other. Lastly, we investigate the SEV correction effects to the CEV model for the price of Asian options.

  • A solution of magnetic fields for amorphous core transformer has been tried using homogenization technique. The technique, which is derived by applying asymptotic expansion to the standard finite element method, is helpful to analyse a joint part of amorphous core transformer microscopically. A butt-lap-step joint type of lamination method is modeled and its equivalent reluctivity is calculated to analyse various quantities of the magnetic fields. The algorithm is also applicable to other electric devices which have complicated material structure with repeated patterns.

  • Partially premixed diffusion system is analyzed using the matched asymptotic expansion technique adopting counterflow with supplying fuel and oxidizer from one side and fuel only from the other as a model problem. Results show that single-stage extinction always occurs as stretch increases, and the partially premixed diffusion flame can hardly exist. Depending on the initial mixture concentrations, either premixed or diffusion flame extinction leads to complete extinction of the system, and the diffusion flame can change its character to premixed flame such that two premixed flames can exist in the partially premixed-diffusion system.

  • In this paper negative drift forces are discussed, which act on a two-dimensional cylinder exposed to slightly modulated waves in water of finite depth. By combining matched asymptotic expansion method with multiple scale technique, it is clearly shown that the slowly-varying drift force can be negative under certain circumstances: i) Incident waves are irregular or slightly modulated. ii) The water depth is finite compared to the wave length of carrier waves. iii) The gap between the keel of the cylinder and ocean floor is narrow. Then the negative drift forces are caused by the unbalance of hydrostatic force associated with set down. Real fluid and wave breaking effects are not considered.

  • Variables, x and y are said to have a linear relation if $y={\beta}_0+{\beta}_1\;x$, and ${\beta}_0$ and ${\beta}_1$ are constants. The relationship is called a structural relationship if x has positive variance (i.e., x is not fixed) and only error-prone measurements of x and y can be obtained. This paper derives (to order $n^{+1/2}$) an approximate distribution of the Studentized test statistic for testing hypotheses about the slope parameter, ${\beta}_1$ in a simple linear structural model. A simulation study suggests our approximate distribution is more accurate approximation to the exact distributions of the Studentized statistic than is the limiting distribution.
