  • In this study, the profiles of asphalt pavements were measured using a lightweight profiler and depths of macrotexture were analyzed based on the measured profiles. Profiles on dense graded asphalt pavement, prorous asphalt pavement, stone mastic asphalt (SMA) pavement, and base layer measured, and depth of macrotexture were calculated and analyzed. Profiles on the pavement that happened as asphalt mixture segregation were measured and depths of macrotexture were analyzed. The results showed that the depths of macrotexture of asphalt pavement were effectively calculated using the measured profiles, and the depths of macrotexture for different asphalt pavements were analyzed. The pavement areas which have asphalt mixture segregation were detected based on analysis of macrotexture depths.

  • Two-lalyered quiet asphalt pavements are well known for their noise reduction capabilities compared to the conventional ones. This study was conducted to analyze the economic effects on two-layered quiet asphalt pavement rather than on one-layered. Noise prediction was performed on the data surveyed from the two-layered quiet asphalt pavement. In addition, the economic analysis was executed considering cost benefits using the noise prediction result. The permeability test was also investigated to evaluate the clogging recovery of two-layered quiet asphalt pavement. Analysis results revealed that the construction cost of two-layered quiet asphalt pavements was cheaper than that of the conventional soundproof walls. The two-layered quiet asphalt pavement with simulated clogging conditions was satisfied the permeability requirements of the permeable asphalt pavements. The permeability test results showed that the permeable time was recorded as 6.77 seconds for one cycle of cleaning job with 400 mL of water.

  • PURPOSES : This paper, presents the results of a laboratory study aimed to verify the suitability of a particular type of Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) steel slag to be recycled in the lithic skeleton of both dense graded and porous asphalt mixtures for flexible pavements. METHODS : Cyclic creep and stiffness modulus tests were performed to evaluate the mechanical performance of three different asphalt mixtures (dense graded, porous asphalt, and stone mastic) prepared with two types of EAF steel slag. For comparison purposes, the same three mixtures were also designed with conventional aggregates (basalt and limestone). RESULTS : All the asphalt mixtures prepared with EAF steel slag satisfied the current requirements of the European standards, which support EAF steel slag as a suitable material for flexible pavement construction. CONCLUSIONS : Based on the experimental work, the use of waste material obtained from steel production (e.g. EAF steel slag) as an alternative in the lithic skeleton of asphalt mixtures can be a satisfactory and reasonable choice that fulfills the "Zero Waste" objective that many iron and steel industries have pursued in the past decades.

  • More and more pavements are suffering from damage these days due to the below-zero winter temperatures and frequent snowfalls. From this research, the freeze-thawing mechanisms of pavements will be observed, and the freeze-thawing resistance of porous asphalt concrete mixture is to be evaluated according to various assessment methods. The investigation was conducted through applying rigid and flexible pavements to freeze-thawing resistance experiments, which include various experiments such as deformation rate measurements, Lottman tests, repeated cyclic freeze-thawing experiments, stripping resistance tests and so on. Test results revealed that the porous asphalt concrete had less deformations according to temperatures compared to dense-graded asphalt concrete due to the 20% void gap. In addition, according to the freeze-thawing repetition experiments which are effected by moisture, the porous asphalt concrete mixture showed superior resistance to repeated cyclic freeze-thawing compared to other asphalt concrete mixtures due to the drainage and the voids within the specimen.

  • A major purpose of this study is to develop high modulus asphalt mixtures for perpetual asphalt pavements which can save maintenance cost by increasing the design and performance periods of the pavements. Various physical and mechanical laboratory tests are performed for the high modulus asphalt binder developed in this study. The test results show that the properties of the high modulus binder are similar to those of the French high modulus binders. In addition to the binder tests, various performance tests are conducted for the high modulus and conventional mixtures. The dynamic modulus test results indicate that the dynamic modulus values of the high modulus mixtures are higher than those of the conventional mixtures by 10~15% at $5^{\circ}C$, 20~25% at $15^{\circ}C$ and 100% at $30^{\circ}C$. It is observed from the performance tests that the high modulus mixtures yield better fatigue, rutting and moisture damage performance than the conventional mixtures.

  • The major pavement distress types found in the domestic roadways include rutting, fatigue cracking, and reflection cracking which are results of the environment and repeated traffic loads. These distresses usually occur before pavements approach their design life, and therefore, a significant amount of national budget is spent for maintenance of roadway pavements. The purpose of this study is to establish a geosynthetics-asphalt pavement system. For the study, wheel tracking tests are conducted to analyze the controlling effect of geosynthetics on rutting of asphalt pavement. On the basis of these works, the reinforcement effect of geosynthetics on the rutting of the asphalt pavement is clarified and deformation characteristics of geosynthetics-asphalt mixture is examined.

  • The objective of this paper is to evaluate a performance-based load zoning procedure in flexible pavements. Long-term performance in flexible pavements will be evaluated using VESYS type rutting model and Miner s theory on fatigue cracking. Permanent deformation properties such as alpha and gnu, and fatigue cracking properties such as k1 and k2 in asphalt concrete were used respectively. The data from the literatures were also used in predicting performance in flexible pavements for evaluating load restrictions as well as parametric study. Finally, a performance-based load zoning procedure and a simple load limit procedure for load zoning were assessed.

  • Dynaflect is known as a very effective equipment for the structural evaluation and rehabilitation of Pavements. It is increasingly used in the design, construction and maintenance of the various pavement structures. In this study, two-layered asphalt concrete pavements with the various moduli and thicknesses are selected as the analytical models. The deflections on the surface corresponding to sensor positions of Dynaflect are analyzed utilizing the multi-layered elastic computer program. From the study of the characteristics of spreadability (SPR), it is found that the SPRs are unique when the moduli ratio of pavements EIIE2 are identical. It is also found that the SPR has a linear relationship with the logarithm of moduli ratio ElIE2 in the range of 1.0 to 50. The regression equation to predict the moduli ratio ElyE2 from the SPR and the pavement taickness h is proposed. A series of charts to estimate the elastic moduli of two-layered asphalt concrete pavement system are also developed.
