  • There is an increasing need to apply artificial intelligence to the real application fields of industry. These include an intelligent process control, an expert machine and a diagnostic and/or maintenance machine. These applications are implemented in AI Languages. It is commonly recognized that AI Languages, such as Common Lisp or Prolog, require a workstation. This is mainly due to the fact that both languages need a large amount of memory space and disk storage space. Workstations are appropriate for a laboratory or office environment. However, they are too bulky to use in the real application fields of industry or business. Also users who apply artificial intelligence to these fields wish to have their own operating systems. We propose a new design method of an intelligent controller which is embedded within equipment and provides easy-to-use tools for artificial intelligence applications. In this paper we describe the new design method of a VMEbus based intelligent controller for artificial intelligence applications and a small operating system which supports Common Lisp and Prolog.

  • Over the last few years, autonomous vehicles have progressed very rapidly. The odometry technique that estimates displacement from consecutive sensor inputs is an essential technique for autonomous driving. In this article, we propose a fast, robust, and accurate odometry technique. The proposed technique is light detection and ranging (LiDAR)-based direct odometry, which uses a spherical range image (SRI) that projects a three-dimensional point cloud onto a two-dimensional spherical image plane. Direct odometry is developed in a vision-based method, and a fast execution speed can be expected. However, applying LiDAR data is difficult because of the sparsity. To solve this problem, we propose an SRI generation method and mathematical analysis, two key point sampling methods using SRI to increase precision and robustness, and a fast optimization method. The proposed technique was tested with the KITTI dataset and real environments. Evaluation results yielded a translation error of 0.69%, a rotation error of 0.0031°/m in the KITTI training dataset, and an execution time of 17 ms. The results demonstrated high precision comparable with state-of-the-art and remarkably higher speed than conventional techniques.

  • In this paper, the system with an artificial intelligent that is able itself to adjust the perimeter condition of the plant is presented. The proposed intelligent system is composed of two learning vector quantization(LVQ) networks, which are used mostly in the field of the pattern recognition and signal processing. From the external condition of the plant, the first LVQ network recognizes the pattern of the sensed signal and the second LVQ network judges synthetically user's characteristics and performs learning. The controller controls the plant using the reference value, which is the output value of the synthetic judgement part. In order to verify the usefulness of the proposed method, we simulated the two LVQs are implemented for the artificial intelligent illuminator as well as being carried out computer simulations. We implemented the proposed artificial intelligent illuminator and perform the experiment.

  • This paper deals with a computer aided control of an adjustment process for the complete electronic devices by means of an application of artificial neural network and an implementation of neuro-controller for intelligent control. Multi-layer neural network model is employed as artificial neural network with the learning method of the error back propagation. Information initially available from real plant under control are the initial values of plant output, and the augmented plant input and its corresponding plant output at that time. For the intelligent control of adjustment process utilizing artificial neural network, the neural network emulator (NNE) and the neural network controller(NNC) are developed. The initial weights of each neural network are determined through off line learning for the given product and it is also employed to cope with environments of the another product by on line learning. Computer simulation, as well as the application to the real situation of proposed intelligent control system is investigated.

  • The aviation gas turbine is composed of many expensive and highly precise parts and operated in high pressure and temperature gas. When breakdown or performance deterioration occurs due to the hostile environment and component degradation, it severely influences the aircraft operation. Recently to minimize this problem the third generation of predictive maintenance known as condition based maintenance has been developed. This method not only monitors the engine condition and diagnoses the engine faults but also gives proper maintenance advice. Therefore it can maximize the availability and minimize the maintenance cost. The advanced gas turbine health monitoring method is classified into model based diagnosis (such as observers, parity equations, parameter estimation and Gas Path Analysis (GPA)) and soft computing diagnosis (such as expert system, fuzzy logic, Neural Networks (NNs) and Genetic Algorithms (GA)). The overview shows an introduction, advantages, and disadvantages of each advanced engine health monitoring method. In addition, some practical gas turbine health monitoring application examples using the GPA methods and the artificial intelligent methods including fuzzy logic, NNs and GA developed by the author are presented.

  • In the existing intelligent command control system study, the analysis results of the commander's battlefield situation questions are provided from knowledge-based situation data. Analysis reporters write these results in various expressions of natural language. However, it is important to analyze situations about information and intelligence according to context. Analyzing the battlefield situation using artificial intelligence is necessary. We propose a virtual dataset generation method based on battlefield simulation scenarios in order to provide a dataset necessary for the battlefield situation analysis based on artificial intelligence. Dataset is generated after identifying battlefield knowledge elements in scenarios. When a candidate hypothesis is created, a unit hypothesis is automatically created. By combining unit hypotheses, similar identification hypothesis combinations are generated. An aggregation hypothesis is generated by grouping candidate hypotheses. Dataset generator SW implementation demonstrates that the proposed method can be generated the virtual battlefield situation dataset.

  • This paper presents a new approach to solve the pursuit problem based on a univector field method. In our proposed method, a set of eight agents works together instantaneously to find suitable moving directions and follow the univector field to pursue and capture a prey agent by surrounding it from eight directions in an infinite grid-world. In addition, a set of strategies is proposed to make the pursuit problem more realistic in the real world environment. This is a general approach, and it can be extended for an environment that contains static or moving obstacles. Experimental results show that our proposed algorithm is effective for the pursuit problem.

  • Problems with the control, oscillatory motion and compliance of pneumatic systems have prevented their widespread use in advanced robotics. However, their compactness, power/weight ratio, ease of maintenance and inherent safety are factors that could be potentially exploited in sophisticated dexterous manipulator designs. These advantages have led to the development of novel actuators such as the McKibben Muscle, Rubber Actuator and Pneumatic Artificial Muscle Manipulators. However, some limitations still exist, such as a deterioration of the performance of transient response due to the changes in the external inertia load in the pneumatic artificial muscle manipulator. To overcome this problem, a switching algorithm of the control parameter using a learning vector quantization neural network (LVQNN) is newly proposed. This estimates the external inertia load of the pneumatic artificial muscle manipulator. The effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm is demonstrated through experiments with different external inertia loads.
