Under transverse earthquake shaking, arching action of bridge structures develops along the deck between the abutments thus providing the so-called deck resistance. The magnitude of the arching action for bridge structures is dependent on the number of spans, connection condition between deck and abutment or piers, and stiffness ratio between superstructure and substructure. In order to investigate the arching action effects for inelastic seismic responses of PSC Box bridges, seismic responses evaluated by pushover analysis, capacity spectrum analysis and nonlinear time-history analysis are compared for 18 example bridge structures with two types of span numbers (short bridge, SB and long bridge, LB), three types of pier height arrangement (regular, semi-regular and irregular) and three types of connection condition between superstructure and substructure (Type A, B, C). The arching action effects (reducing inelastic displacement and increasing resistance capacity) for short bridge (SB) is more significant than those for long bridge (LB). Semi-regular and irregular bridge structures have more significant arching action than regular bridges.

The concrete box girder members are extensively used as a superstructure in bridge construction. The load carrying capacity of concrete box girders in lateral direction is generally influenced by the sizes of haunch and web. The internal upper decks are restrained by the webs and exhibit strength enhancement due to the development of aching action. The current codes do not have generally consider the arching action of deck slab in the design because of complexity of the behavior. However, there are significant benefits in utilizing the effects of arching action in the design of concrete members. The main objective of this paper is to propose a rational method to predict the ultimate load of deck slab by considering various haunch sizes and web restraint effect of concrete box girder bridges. To this end, a comprehensive experimental program has been set up and seven large-scale concrete box girders have been tested. A transverse analysis model of concrete box girders with haunches is proposed and compared with test data. The results of present study indicate that the ultimate strength is significantly affected by haunch dimension. The increase of strength due to concrete arcing action is reduced with an increase of prestressing steel ratio in laterally prestressed concrete box girders and increases with a larger haunch dimension. The proposed theory allows more realistic prediction of lateral ultimate strength for rational design of actual concrete box girder bridges.

The purpose of this study is to propose the confinement effectiveness of precast segmental concrete that binding by lateral confining steel in the method of precast segmental concrete pridge piers construction. Generally, the confinement effect of concrete that binding by lateral confining steel is defined by the confinement effectiveness coefficient and the confinement effectiveness coefficient is defined as the ratio of area of effectively confined concrete core to area of confined concrete core. The area of effectively confined concrete core is defined by Arching action occurred on a space of lateral confinement steel and The area of confined concrete core is defined by the ratio of area of longitudinal reinforcement to area of core of section. But in case of precast segmental concrete, concrete cover that exist on top and bottom of concrete segment should be considered.
This paper is concerned with free vibration characteristics and natural frequency of horizontally curved composite plate girder bridges. Three-dimensional finite element models are developed for the girders using the software package LUSAS and analyses carried out on the models. The validity of the finite element models is first established through comparison with the corresponding results published by other researchers. Studies are then carried out to investigate the effects of total number of girders, number of cross-frames and curvature on the free vibration response of horizontally curved composite plate girder bridges. The results confirm the fact that bending modes are always coupled with torsional modes for horizontally curved bridge girder systems. The results show that the first bending mode is influenced by composite action between the concrete deck and steel beam at low subtended angle but, on the girders with larger subtended angle at the centre of curvature such influence is non-existence. The increase in the number of girders results in higher natural frequency but at a decreasing rate. The in-plane modes viz. longitudinal and arching modes are significantly influenced by composite action and number of girders. If no composite action is taken into account the number of girders has no significant effect for the in-plane modes.

In the steel-free bridge concrete deck, steel straps are generally used instead of conventional steel rebar while laterally restrained in the perpendicular direction to the traffic in order fir the arching effect of concrete deck. In this paper, the minimum amount of FRP bar is to be suggested based on the structural strength, crack propagation, stress level and others in order to control cracks. As a result of laboratory tests, the structural strength of deck with 0.15 percentage of steel strap showed improved structural strength including ductility. The long-term serviceability of steel strap deck with FRP bar proved to satisfy the requirements and to be structurally stable while showing the amount of crack and residual vertical displacement within the allowable limits after two million cyclic loadings. The structural failure of RC bridge deck is generally caused from the punching shear rather than moment. Therefore, the ultimate load at failure could be estimated using the shear strength formula in the two-way slab based on ACI and AASHTO criteria. However the design criteria tend to underestimate the shear strength since they don't consider the arching effects and nonlinear fracture in bridge deck with lateral confinement. In this paper, an equation to estimate the punching shear strength of steel strap deck is to be developed considering the actual failure geometries and effect of lateral confinement by strap while the results are verified in accordance with laboratory tests.
During the recent years, resistance mechanisms of reinforced concrete (RC) buildings against progressive collapse are investigated extensively. Although a general agreement is observed about their qualitative behavior in technical literature, there is not such a comprehensive point of view regarding the quantitative methods for predicting collapse resistance of RC members. Therefore, in the present study a simplified theoretical method is developed in order to predict general behavior of RC frames under the column removal scenario. In the introduced method, the robustness of the frame is extracted based on the capacity of the beams. The proposed method expresses ultimate arching and catenary capacities of the beams and also obtains the corresponding vertical displacements. Based on the calculated capacities, the introduced method also provides a quantitative assessment of structural robustness and determines whether or not the collapse occurs. The capability of the method is evaluated using experimental results in the literature. The evaluation study indicates that the proposed theoretical procedure can establish a reliable foundation for progressive collapse assessment of RC frame structures.
Centrifuge model tests of cantilever retaining wall were performed to investigate the vertical stress distribution due to selfweight of backfill material. Model tests were carried out to find the effect of arching action on vertical stress distribution by changing the roughness of rigid boundary slope and the distance between retaining wall and boudary slope. A reduced scale model of cantilever retaining wall was made with concrete and Jumunjin Standary Sand with 80 % of relative density was used as foundation and backfill material. Centrifuge tests were performed by increasing g-level up to 40 g with measuring vertical stress induced by selfweight of backfill material. Test results on vertical stress distribution were analyzed and compared with results of Silo theory.

The equation of motion of a one way (vertical) spanning strip wall, as an assembly of two rigid bodies, is presented. Only one degree of freedom is needed to completely describe the wall response as the bodies are assumed to be perfectly rectangular and are allowed to rock but not to slide horizontally. Furthermore, no arching action occurs since vertical motion of the upper body is not restrained. Consequently, the equation of motion is nonlinear, with non constant coefficients and a Coriolis acceleration term. Phenomena associated with overburden to self weight ratio, motion triggering, impulsive energy dissipation, amplitude dependency of damping and period of vibration, and scale effect are discussed, contributing to a more complete understanding of experimental observations and to an estimation of system parameters based on the wall characteristics, such as intermediate hinge height and energy damping, necessary to perform nonlinear time history analyses. A comparison to a simple standing, or parapet, wall is developed in order to better highlight the characteristics of this assembly.

This study carried out shear experiment for concrete deep beam reinforced FRP(Fiber Reinforced Polymers) bar to investigate shear strength of deep beam. The test conducted for 15 specimens, and the variables were shear span-to-depth ratio, reinforcement ratio, effective depth, reinforcement components of shear strength. crack, deflection are investigated based on shear experimental. We compared shear strength using ACI 318-08 STM with proposed equations that considered arching action according to shear span-to-depth ratio. Consequently shear strength of deep beam reinforced FRP bar presented higher shear strength than steel bar. ACI STM's predictions are better accurate than other predicting equations.
In this paper, the simple truss model was modified to predict the punching shear strength of long-span prestressed concrete (PSC) deck slabs under wheel load including the effects of transverse prestressing and long span length between girders. The strength of the compressive zone arounding punching cone was evaluated by the stiffness of inclined strut which was modified by considering aging effective modulus. The stiffness of springs which control lateral displacement of the roller supports consists of the steel reinforcement and prestressing which passed through the punching cone. Initial angle of struts was determined by the experimental observation to compensate for uncertainties in the complexities of the punching shear. The validity of computed punching shear strength by modified simple truss model was shown by comparing with experimental results and the experimental results were also compared with existing punching shear equations to determine level of predictability. The modified simple truss model appeared to better predict the punching shear strength of PSC deck slabs than other available equations. The punching shear strength, which was determined by snap-through critical load of modified simple truss model, can be used effectively to examine punching shear strength of long span PSC deck slabs.
