  • STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Proximal contact plays an important role in the stability and maintenance of the integrity of the dental arches. However, it is difficult to evaluate quantitatively the tightness of proximal tooth contact (TPTC). PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to measure the TPTC in permanent dentition. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ten young adult volunteers with healthy dentition participated in this experiment. The TPTC between the teeth of both the maxilla and the mandible was measured at rest state by a novel device which records the TPTC by pulling of a stainless steel strip (0.03 mm thick) using the electric motor. One-way ANOVA test was used to compare the values in all measured area. When a statistically significant difference was calculated, Bonferroni correction was applied. Independent samples t-test was used to compare the values in male and female. RESULTS: The lowest TPTC and the highest TPTC was measured between the lower central incisors (0.87 ${\pm}$ 0.20 N), and between the lower left first molar and second molar (1.99 ${\pm}$ 0.68 N), respectively. All TPTC per quadrant demonstrated a similar pattern of a continuous increased gradient in an anterior-posterior direction. There are no significant difference between the maxilla and mandible. CONCLUSION: The TPTC was measured quantitatively by a novel device and decreased progressively in a posterior-anterior direction.

  • For the lateral-torsional buckling analysis of the thin-walled space frame and circular arch with the unsymmetric cross section, the tangent stiffness matrices are derived by introducing Vlasov's assumption for the thin-walled beam and using the principle of virtual displacement. In the cases of the unrestrained torsion and the restrained torsion, the elastic and geometric stiffness matrices corresponding to semitangential rotation and semitangential moment are evaluated by using the Hermitian polynomials as the shape function. In order to illustrate the accuracy and convergence characteristics of the derived formulations, numerical examples for the lateral-torsional buckling analysis of the hinged circular arch under pure bending and uniform compression are presented and compared with the analytic solutions of references.

  • Drosophila simulans and D. mauritiana are sibling species, the former cosmopolitan and the latter restricted to the oceanic island of Mauritius. Sex comb-tooth number of male flies of D. simulans were about 9.83, while those of D. mauritiana were 12.90. Genital arch of D. simulans is large semicircular shaped expasion, while that of D. mauritiana is a narrow fingerlike expansion. We used classical genetic analysis to measure effects of genes on the X chromosome responsible for numeral and morphological differences in sex comb-tooth and genital arch between these species, respectively. For these purposes, mutant strain of D. simulans and wild type strain of D. mauritiana were hybridized and males of the FI and the backcrossed progenies were compared with two characters above mentioned. The sex comb-tooth number of F, males were about 11.79, and the genitalia of F, male were intermediate in shape between those of D. simulans and D. mauritiana. Genetic analysis of sex comb-tooth number and genital arches differing between D. simulans and D. mauritiana showed that very little diffemce was due to effect of the X chromosome.

  • Objectives : The prescription of Semyung-Gangji-tang, designed for the treatment of hyperlipidemia and atherosclerosis, consists of herbs good for treating blood stasis and phlegm stagnancy. It invigorates the liver, kidneys and spleen. Its medical nature is not too cold or too hot and increases human vital energy. The purpose of this study is to examine the curative effects of Semyung-Gangji-tang on atherosclerosis in hyperlipidemic rabbits. Methods : Twenty-four male NZW rabbits, around 2kg of body weight, were divided into 4 groups. Group I served as the normal group. Group II served as the atherogenic model group, fed a 1 % cholesterol diet for 8 weeks and sacrificed. Group III served as the atherogenic control group, fed with a 1 % cholesterol diet for 8 weeks and with a normal diet for the next 4 weeks. Group IV served as the treatment group treated the same as the control group and medicated with Semyung-Gangji-tang for the last 4 weeks. Three animals of group I and six animals of group n were sacrificed at 8 weeks. Five animals of group I , five animals of group III and IV were sacrificed at 12 weeks. Pathological examinations and image analysis were performed on the collected tissue samples. Results : The percentage of lipid deposition area of thoracic aortas of group IV($41.74{\pm}8.93%$) at 12 weeks was decreased compared with the group III ($71.30{\pm}12.74%$) at 12 weeks, but a statistical difference was not observed. The percentage of group IV at 12 weeks was significantly decreased (P<0.05) compared with the group n ($76.41{\pm}7.43%$) at 8 weeks. Histopathologically, advanced atheromas with calcification of aortic arches were observed in all animals of the control group at 12 weeks, but were observed in 2 animals of the treatment group at 12 weeks. Histopathologically, atheromas with calcification of thoracic aortas were observed with major atherogenic lesions in control group at 12 weeks, but simple fibro-fatty streaks were observed major atherogenic lesions in treatment group at 12 weeks. Conclusions : These results indicate that Semyung-Gangji-tang has antiatherogenic effects on experimentally induced atherosclerosis in rabbits.

  • Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate three-dimensional molar displacement after distalization via miniscrews and a horizontal modification of the trans-palatal-arch (TPA). Methods: The subjects in this clinical trial were 26 Class II patients. After the preparation of a complete set of diagnostic records, miniscrews were inserted between the maxillary 2nd premolar and 1st molar on the palatal side. Elastic modules connected to the TPA exerting an average force of 150-200 g/side parallel to the occlusal plane were applied. Cone-beam computed tomography was utilized to evaluate the position of the miniscrews relative to the adjacent teeth and maxillary sinus, and the direction of force relative to molar furcation. The distances from the central point of the incisive papilla to the mesiopalatal cusps of the 1st maxillary molars and the distances between the mesiopalatal cusps of the left and right molars were measured to evaluate displacement of the maxillary molars on the horizontal plane. Interocclusal space was used to evaluate vertical changes. Results: Mean maxillary 1st molar distalization was $2.3{\pm}1.1mm$, at a rate of $0.4{\pm}0.2mm/month$, and rotation was not significant. Intermolar width increased by $2.9{\pm}1.8mm$. Molars were intruded relative to the neighboring teeth, from 0.1 to 0.8 mm. Conclusions: Distalization of molars was possible without extrusion, using the appliance investigated. The intrusive component of force reduced the rate of distal movement.

  • This study was to understand the component that affects the formative beauty and to present the direction of bridge design for improving the image of urban landscape to survey the visual effect and landscape Preference by the change of bridge type. The results of this study are as follows. In the results of image analysis by bridge types, the images of one-arch bridges are unique and interesting, whereas more than two successive arched bridge were harmonize, stable, consecutive and regular. In the case of the arch rib, braced-rib arch bridge was assessed that complicated, diverse and interesting more than solid-rib arch bridge. The results of factor analysis on the psychological factor were classified into three categories: orderliness, aesthetic and symbolism. In the results of analysis on psychological factors by bridge types, the orderliness and symbolism were different in the position of path, and the number of arches, too. In case of arch rib, symbolism was different. In the preference analysis, they showed a sensitive reaction in the background of building. In the results of the relativity preference and psychological factor, according to aesthetic, symbolism and orderliness, there was an effect on the background of building. And, there showed the high effect in order of aesthetic, orderliness and symbolism in the background of mountain and building. This study should be objective raw data of the arch bridge design for improving the urban landscape. In the future, aesthetic variables like colors or textures should be considered for more exact evaluation.

  • The governing differential equations and the boundary conditions for the free vibration of fixed-ended uniform parabolic arch are derived on the basis of the equilibrium equations and the D'Alembert principle. The effect of rotary inertia as well as extensional and flexural deformations is considered in the governing differential equations. A trial elgenvalue method is used for determining the natural frequencies. The Runge-Kutta method is used in this method to perform the integration of the differential equations. The detailed studies are made of the lowest three vibration frequencies for the span length equal to 10m. The effect of the rotary inertia is analyzed and it's numerical data are presented in table. And as the numerical results the frequency versus the rise of arch and the radius of gyration are presented in figures.

  • Branchio-otic syndrome(BOS) is a relatively uncommon genetic malformation associated with dysmorphogenesis of the first and second branchial arches and is characterized by branchial fistulae, congenital preauricular fistulae, and anomalies of the pinnae, external, middle, and inner ears, accompanied by hearing loss. Recently, we experienced a case of BOS in a 10 years old female patient and report this case with a review of literature. 10-year-old girl presented with hearing impairment, bilateral preauricular fistula and cervical fistula. The pure tone audiometry revealed that she had 60dB sensorineural hearing loss on right side and 90dB mixed hearing loss on left. Bilateral branchial fistula was found on the neck CT scan and bilateral ossicular and cochlear abnormality combined with enlarged internal auditory canal was noted on the temporal bone CT scan. To investigate the association with EYA1 gene, we performed DNA sequncing with peripheral white blood cell and found the point mutations on Exon 7, 12 and 16 of EYA1 gene. The preauricular fistula and branchial fistula was excised surgically and hearing aid was applied on her left side. There was no sign of fistula recurrence for seven years after the surgery.

  • Distribution of a monogenean helminth Microcotyle sebastis on the gills of cultured Korean rockfish (Sebastes schlegeli) was investigated with regard to gill arches, sides of gill hemibranches (anterior or posterior), and their sections (dorsal, medial and ventral). M. sebastis has a significant preference for the second and third pair of gills, and shows marked affinity for anterior hemibranches of each gill branch, and medial sections of each gill hemibranch. The results suggest that the larger volume of water flows and surface area of the second and third pair of gills might affect the distribution of M. sebastis, and the concentrated distribution of M. sebastis on the anterior medial section of gills would be related with the increasing chances of mating by niche restriction.

  • In spite of the progress in techniques and materials of the prosthodontic rehabilitation of patients with complete edentulous arches, prosthodontists still face patients' complaints about dissatisfaction and discomfort from their dentures. In the past several decades, prosthodontists tried to find the factors that influence the patient's satisfaction with dentures. However the results are contraversial especially with the psychological factor. In this study using 'patient denture satisfaction questionnaire' and Hopkins Symptom Checklist, we tried to find the correlation between the patient's denture satisfaction and the patient's psychological aspects. 23 complete edentulous patients who have visited the Department of Prosthodontics, Yonsei University Dental Hospital from September 1998 to June 1999 for complete denture treatment were asked to complete the questionnaires 4 to 6 weeks after the upper and lower complete delivery. After the measurement of validity of the questionnaires, correlations between the patient's general satisfaction with their new upper and lower complete dentures and the other satisfaction questions including the satisfactions with esthetics, retention, mastication, speech, comfort and other people's opinion and between the patient's general satisfaction with their new upper and lower complete dentures and the 5 symptoms of Hopkins Symptoms Checklist including somatic, obsessive-compulsive, interpersonal sensitivity, depression and anxiety were analyzed. Among the several satisfaction questionnaire items, comfort with the lower denture showed highest relation to the patient's general satisfaction with dentures. However, only the anxiety scale of Hopkins Symptoms Checklist among the other symptom scales was related to the patient's general satisfaction with dentures. The two questionaires used in this study turned out to be valid means of analyzing patient's denture satisfaction and psychological status before and after the complete denture treatment.
