  • As industry is progressing and standards of living are improved, the demand of electrical energy is expected to grow 8-9% annually. Therefore, the importance of electrical fire prevention technology with the ability of the power supply is being emphasized. According to the statistics of fire in Korea, fire occurred about 45,000 cases annually, and electrical fire possessed about 20%. The electrical fire by poor contact has increased gradually, can be connected as great fire to secondarily induce short circuit and earth fault. Then analysis of heating causes of electrical connections between copper and copper alloy is needed. Also, detection and analysis algorithm of oxide at copper alloy are necessary. In this research, in order to understand the characteristics of oxide growth with rising resistance and heating, it is demonstrated that the oxide at electrical connections can cause fire due to arcing.

  • While nickel-based alloys have been widely used for power plants due to corrosion resistance and good mechanical properties, during the last couple of decades, failures of nuclear components increased gradually. One of main degradation mechanisms was primary water stress corrosion cracking at dissimilar metal welds of piping and reactor head penetrations. In this context, precise estimation of welding effects became an important issue for ensuring reliability of them. The present study deals with a series of finite element analyses and crack growth rate evaluation of Alloys 690/152. Firstly, variation of residual stresses and equivalent plastic strains was simulated taking into account welding of a cylindrical block. Subsequently, extraction and pre-cracking of compact tension (CT) specimens were considered from different locations of the block. Finally, crack growth curves of the alloys and heat affected zone were developed based on analyses results combined with experimental data in references. Characteristics of crack growth behaviors were also discussed in relation to mechanical and fracture parameters.

  • A growing number of gas-insulated transformers in underground power substations in urban areas are approaching 20 years of operation, the time when failures begin to occur. It is thus essential to prevent failure through accurate condition diagnosis of the given facility. Various solid insulation materials exist inside of the transformers, and the generated decomposition gas may differ for each gas-insulated equipment. In this study, a simulation system was designed to analyze the deterioration characteristics of SF6 decomposition gas and insulation materials under the conditions of partial discharge and thermal fault for diagnosis of gas-insulated transformers. Degradation characteristics of the insulation materials was determined using an automatic viscometer and FT-IR. The analysis results showed that the pattern of decomposition gas generation under partial discharge and thermal fault was different. In particular, acetaldehyde was detected under a thermal fault in all types of insulation, but not under partial discharge or an arc condition. In addition, in the case of insulation materials, deterioration of the insulation itself rapidly progressed as the experimental temperature increased. It was confirmed that it was possible to diagnose the internal discharge or thermal fault occurrence of the transformer through the ratio and type of decomposition gas generated in the gas-insulated transformer.

  • In case of using Asymmetric Bipolar Pulsed DC (ABPD) power generator, thin film is efficiently deposited as ions are getting higher energy by suppressing target poisoning and electric arc. In this article, the mechanical properties of CNx thin films deposited on the STS 316L were compared with DC and ABPD power generators. The CNx thin films deposited with ABPD clearly improved wear resistance by higher ratio of sp3CN as compared with DC. Nb interlayer affected to increase the value of 10N of adhesion between CNx thin films and substrate. But, CNx thin films deposited with ABPD couldn't endure to wear load and decreased wear resistance as the films were too thinner than substrate. Nevertheless the higher substrate bias energy applied to perform the dense films, it wasn't shown benefits about the wear properties from DC sputtering. But, in case of using ABPD sputtering, the wear resistance was largely improved without changing morphology despite of thin films.

  • The effects of Ag addition to Zr-based hydrogen storage alloys ($Zr_{0.7}Ti_{0.3}V_{0.4}Ni_{1.2}Mn_{0.4}$, $Zr_{0.7}Ti_{0.3}V_{0.4}Ni_{1.2}Mn_{0.3}Cr_{0.1}$ and $Zr_{0.6}Ti_{0.4}V_{0.4}Ni_{1.2}Mn_{0.3}Fe_{0.1}$) on the electrode properties were examined. Ag-free and Ag-added Ze-based alloys were prepared by arc melting, crushed mechanically, and subjected to the electrochemical measurement. In $Zr_{0.7}Ti_{0.3}V_{0.4}Ni_{1.2}Mn_{0.4}$ alloy, 0.08 wt% Ag addition to the alloy improved the activation rate. Also Ag addition improved both activation property and discharge capacity in $Zr_{0.7}Ti_{0.3}V_{0.4}Ni_{1.2}Mn_{0.3}Cr_{0.1}$. For these Ag-added alloys, discharge capacities with the change of charge-discharge current density(10mA, 15mA and 30mA) are almost constant. Showing very high rate capability, discharge capacity of $Zr_{0.6}Ti_{0.4}V_{0.4}Ni_{1.2}Mn_{0.3}Fe_{0.1}$ alloy increased by Ag addition to the alloy. When the amount of Ag addition in $Zr_{0.7}Ti_{0.3}V_{0.4}Ni_{1.2}Mn_{0.4}$ alloy increased too much, the electrode properties became worse. Unveiling mechanism of effect of Ag addition is now progressing in our laboratory.

  • Five different processes were selected and tested to find an useful method of manufacturing Fe-Ti type electrode. Initially, FeTi alloy was prepared by melting in plasma arc furnace and then powdered for shaping. Electroless Ni plating on these powder particles before shaping improved the discharge characteristics. The effects of heat-treatments on the electrode characteristics were also investigated. The discharge capacities of electrods were increased with the increasing heat-treatment temperatures. When heat treated at $1000^{\circ}C$ after shaping, the best results were acquired in the discharge capacity and cycle life. Both electroless Ni plating and heat-treatment were appeared to be crucial for the performance improvement of FeTi type electrode. Fe-Ti -Mn electrodes were prepared according to the process suggested in this study and tested to verify the promising effects of that.

  • In the thin film alloy formation of the transition metals ion-beam-mixing technique forms a metastable structure which cannot be found in the arc-melted metal alloys. Sppecifically it is well known that the studies about the electronic structure of ion-beam-mixed alloys pprovide the useful information in understanding the metastable structures in the metal alloy. We studied the electronic change in the ion-beam-mixed ppt-Ct alloys by XppS and XANES. These analysis tools pprovide us information about the charge transfer in the valence band of intermetallic bonding. The multi-layered films were depposited on the SiO2 substrate by the sequential electron beam evapporation at a ppressure of less than 5$\times$10-7 Torr. These compprise of 4 ppairs of ppt and Cu layers where thicknesses of each layer were varied in order to change the alloy compposition. Ion-beam-mixing pprocess was carried out with 80 keV Ae+ ions with a dose of $1.5\times$ 1016 Ar+/cm2 at room tempperature. The core and valence level energy shift in these system were investigated by x-ray pphotoelectron sppectroscoppy(XppS) pphotoelectrons were excited by monochromatized Al K a(1486.6 eV) The ppass energy of the hemisppherical analyzer was 23.5 eV. Core-level binding energies were calibrated with the Fermi level edge. ppt L3-edge and Cu K-edge XANES sppectra were measured with the flourescence mode detector at the 3C1 beam line of the ppLS (ppohang light source). By using the change of White line(WL) area of the each metal sites and the core level shift we can obtain the information about the electrons pparticippating in the intermetallic bonding of the ion-beam-mixed alloys.

  • One hundred of thirty volcanic rocks col1ected from the Jeju island, Jeongog, Guryongpo and other areas were analyzed for major elements and trace elements with Au by inductively coupled argon plasma and graphite furnace atomic absorptiom spectrometry. The Au content is the highest values (0.2~43.4 ppb, average; 10.34 ppb) from the Jeju island volcanic rocks and the lowest (0.5~11.0 ppb, average; 1.23 ppb) from the Guryongpo volcanic area. The content of Au tends to be higher in the Quarternary volcanic rocks than Tertiary or Cretaceous volcanic rocks. The Au content of the calc alkali volcanic rocks tends to increase from mafic to felsic volcanic rocks, but that of the alkalic volcanic rocks tends to increase from felsic to mafic volcanic rocks. The Au content of the volcanic rocks collected from the Jeju island shows the highest values in the feldspar olivine basalts. Elements or oxides which have positive or negative correlations with Au are Ag, Mo, Rb, V, Y, $K_2O$, MgO and $SiO_2$, but other elements analyzed are not shown correlations with Au. It has a tendency to show that samples from the Jeju with 5 ppb gold and more are plotted in the non-Dupal area and those with less than 5 ppb gold in the Dupal area, while those from the Jeongog with 5 ppb gold and more are plotted in the Dupal area and those with less than 5 ppb gold in the non-Dupal area, in the Ba/Nb-La/Nb, Zr/Nb-Ba/Nb diagrams. It shows that samples from the Jeju and Guryongpo with high gold content are plotted in the within-plate, while those with low gold content are plotted in the arc-related area, and those from the Jeongog are scattered in the $TiO_2-Al_2O_3$, $Zr/A1_2O_3-TiO_2/Al_2O_3$ diagrams.

  • Even though Mesozoic Mudeungsan tuff, located within Neungju Basin, has been named several rock names, it should be named as Mudeungsan tuff due to several evidences, such as fiamme, welded texture and rock fragments in the Mudeungsan tuff. Volcanic eruption boundary between the Cheonwangbong and Anyangsan areas is not clear, but petrochemical and mineral chemical evidences with different ages indicate clear petrological boundary between Cheonwangbong and Anyangsan. The Mudeungsan tuffs from Cheonwangbong and Anyangsan is welded crystal tuff with dacitic composition and were generated from cogenetic calc-alkaline magma in the volcanic arc environment. Geochemical events indicate that magma beneath Cheonwangbong was seems to have been evolved from the magma beneath Anyangsan due to fractional crystallization dominated by plagioclase.
