  • Maneuverability is a crucial factor for the safety and success of submarine missions. This paper introduces a mathematical model that considers the large drift and angle of attack motions of submarines. Various computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were performed to adapt Karasuno's fishery vessel maneuvering mathematical model to submarines. The study also presents the procedure for obtaining the physics-based hydrodynamic coefficients proposed by Karasuno through CFD calculations. Based on these coefficients, the reconstructed forces and moments were compared with those obtained from CFD and to the hydrodynamic derivatives expressed by a Taylor expansion. The study also discusses the mathematical maneuvering model that accounts for the large drift angles and angles of attack of submarines. The comparison results showed that the proposed maneuvering mathematical model based on modified Karasno's model could cover a large range of motions, including horizontal motion and vertical motions. In particular, the results show that the physics-based mathematical maneuvering model can represent the forces and moments acting on the submarine hull during large drift and angle of attack motions. The proposed mathematical model based on the Karasuno model could obtain more accurate results than the Taylor third-order approximation-based mathematical model in estimating the hydrodynamic forces acting on submarines during large drift and angle of attack motions.

  • It is shown that the cubic law can be modified regarding the steady-state Navier-Stokes equations by using perturbation approximation method for a sinusoidal aperture variation. In order to adopt the perturbation theory, the sinusoidal function needs to be non-dimensionalized for the amplitude and wavelength. Then, the steady-state Navier-Stokes equations can be solved by expanding the non-dimensionalized stream function with respect to the small value of the parameter (the ratio of the mean aperture to the wavelength), together with the continuity equation. From the approximate solution of the Navier-Stokes equations, the basic cubic law is successfully modified for the steady-state condition and a sinusoidal aperture variation. A finite difference method is adopted to calculate the pressure within a fracture model, and the results of numerical experiments show the accuracy and applicability of the modified cubic law. As a result, it is noted that the modified cubic law, suggested in this study, will be used for the analysis of fluid flow through aperture geometry of sinusoidal distributions.

  • The pH neutralization process has long been taken as a representative benchmark problem of nonlinear chemical process control due to its nonlinearity and time-varying nature. For general nonlinear processes, it is difficult to control with a linear model-based control method so nonlinear controls must be considered. Among the numerous approaches suggested, the most rigorous approach is the dynamic optimization. However, as the size of the problem grows, the dynamic programming approach is suffered from the curse of dimensionality. In order to avoid this problem, the Neuro-Dynamic Programming (NDP) approach was proposed by Bertsekas and Tsitsiklis (1996). The NDP approach is to utilize all the data collected to generate an approximation of optimal cost-to-go function which was used to find the optimal input movement in real time control. The approximation could be any type of function such as polynomials, neural networks and etc. In this study, an algorithm using NDP approach was applied to a pH neutralization process to investigate the feasibility of the NDP algorithm and to deepen the understanding of the basic characteristics of this algorithm. As the global approximator, the neural network which requires training and k-nearest neighbor method which requires querying instead of training are investigated. The global approximator requires optimal control strategy. If the optimal control strategy is not available, suboptimal control strategy can be used even though the laborious Bellman iterations are necessary. For pH neutralization process it is rather easy to devise an optimal control strategy. Thus, we used an optimal control strategy and did not perform the Bellman iteration. Also, the effects of constraints on control moves are studied. From the simulations, the NDP method outperforms the conventional PID control.

  • In this paper, we introduce a method to synthesize realistic make-up effects on input images efficiently. In particular, we focus on shading on the make-up effects due to the lighting and face curvature. By doing this, we can synthesize a wider range of effects realistically than the previous methods. To do this, the information about lighting information together with the normal vectors on all pixels over the face region in the input image. Since the previous methods that compute lighting information and normal vectors require relatively heavy computation cost, we introduce an approach to approximate lighting information using cascade pose regression process and normal vectors by transforming, rendering, and warping a standard 3D face model. The proposed method consumes much less computation time than the previous methods. In our experiment, we show the proposed approximation technique can produce naturally looking virtual make-up effects.

  • This paper presents the process generating the 3-dimensional free f o r m hull form by using an ASMOD(Adaptive Spline Modeling of Observation Data) and a hybrid curve approximation. For example, we apply an ASMOD to the generation of a SAC(Sectiona1 Area Curve) in an initial hull form design. That is, we define SACS of real ships as B-spline curves by a hybrid curve approximation (which is the combination method of a B-spline fitting method and a genetic algorithm) and accumulate a database of control points. Then we let ASMOD learn from the correlation of principal dimensions with control points and make the ASMOD model for SAC generation. Identically, we apply an ASMOD to the generation of other hull form characteristic curves - design waterline curve, bottom tangent line, center profile line. Conclus~onally we can generate a design hull form from these hull form characteristic curves.

  • This paper is concerned with the calculation of the wave resistance for SWATH ships based on a low order Rankine source panel method. Two types of free surface boundary conditions, Dawson type (double model approximation) and Kelvin type (free stream approximation) are used. For the free surface boundary calculation, an analytic differentiation is employed instead of implementing a finite difference scheme. Then, the radiation condition is satisfied by, so called, the panel shift method. The numerical results using the above two methods are compared with those using the thin ship/modified slender body approximation and also with the experimental results. The SWATH models considered are a single strut SWATH and a twin strut SWATH together with the variations of two demihull separation distance. In order to prove the validity of the program developed, the numerical calculations for a Wigley mono hull and Wigley twin hulls are compared with the available experimental results.

  • In this paper we consider an application of the method of electromagnetic (EM) migration to the interpretation of a typical marine controlled-source (MCSEM) survey consisting of a set of sea-bottom receivers and a moving electrical bipole transmitter. Three-dimensional interpretation of MCSEM data is a very challenging problem because of the enormous number of computations required in the case of the multi-transmitter and multi-receiver data acquisition systems used in these surveys. At the same time, we demonstrate that the MCSEM surveys with their dense system of transmitters and receivers are extremely well suited for application of the migration method. In order to speed up the computation of the migration field, we apply a fast form of integral equation (IE) solution based on the multigrid quasi-linear (MGQL) approximation which we have developed. The principles of migration imaging formulated in this paper are tested on a typical model of a sea-bottom petroleum reservoir.

  • Numerical values of thermodynamic properties such as temperature, pressure, dryness, volume, enthalpy and entropy are required in numerical analysis on evaluating the thermal performance. But the steam table itself cannot be used without modelling. From this point of view the neural network with function approximation characteristics can be an alternative. the multi-layer neural networks were made for saturated vapor region and superheated vapor region separately. For saturated vapor region the neural network consists of one input layer with 1 node, two hidden layers with 10 and 20 nodes each and one output layer with 7 nodes. For superheated vapor region it consists of one input layer with 2 nodes, two hidden layers with 15 and 25 nodes each and one output layer with 3 nodes. The proposed model gives very successful results with ${\pm}0.005%$ of percentage error for temperature, enthalpy and entropy and ${\pm}0.025%$ for pressure and specific volume. From these successful results, it is confirmed that the neural networks could be powerful method in function approximation of the steam table.

  • We introduce a parameter estimation algorithm by using pole-zero coefficients of Pade approximation for radar active cancellation. Proposed scheme is based on relation among pole-zero coefficients of Pade approximation, parameters, and samples of received signal. A closed form solution for parameter estimation is achieved with a few samples of received signal and a simple comparison. Also, stepwise estimation algorithm is proposed to suppress beat effect which is occurred by active cancellation over long time with imperfectly estimated parameters. Simulation results show that proposed scheme performs faster radar active cancellation with lower computational complexity than the conventional schemes.

  • In numerical analysis on the thermal performance of the heat exchanger with phase change fluids, the numerical values of thermodynamic properties are needed. But the steam table should be modeled properly as the direct use of thermodynamic properties of the steam table is impossible. In this study the function approximation characteristics of neural networks was used in modeling the saturated vapor region of refrigerant R12. The neural network consists of one input layer with one node, two hidden layers with 10 and 20 nodes each and one output layer with 7 nodes. Input can be both saturation temperature and saturation pressure and two cases were examined. The proposed model gives percentage error of ${\pm}$0.005% for enthalpy and entropy, ${\pm}$0.02% for specific volume and ${\pm}$0.02% for saturation pressure and saturation temperature except several points. From this results neural network could be a powerful method in function approximation of saturated vapor region of R12.
