  • This study presents an efficient method for optimum design of plate and shell structures, when the design variables are continuous or discrete. Both sizing and shape design variables are considered. First the structural responses such as element forces are approximated in terms of some intermediate variables. By substituting these approximate relations into the original design problem, an explicit nonlinear approximate design task with high quality approximation is achieved. This problem with continuous variables, can be solved by means of numerical optimization techniques very efficiently, the results of which are then used for discrete variable optimization. Now, the approximate problem is converted into a sequence of second level approximation problems of separable form and each of which is solved by a dual strategy with discrete design variables. The approach is efficient in terms of the number of required structural analyses, as well as the overall computational cost of optimization. Examples are offered and compared with other methods to demonstrate the features of the proposed method.

  • This paper is concerned with the modification of multidisciplinary feasible formulation for MDO problems using the integrated coupled approximate models. A drawback of conventional MDFs is the numerical difficulty in decomposing the design variables and deriving the coupled equations of state. To overcome such a drawback of conventional methods, the coupling in analysis and design is resolved by approximating the state variables in each discipline by the response surface method and by modifying the optimization formulation using the corresponding integrated coupled approximate models. The validity, reliability and effectiveness of the proposed method are illustrated and verified through two optimization problems, a mathematical MDF problem and the multidisciplinary optimum design of suspension unit of wheeled armored vehicle.

  • This paper is a survey on the Hyers-Ulam-Rassias stability of the Jensen functional equation in $C^*$-algebras. The concept of Hyers-Ulam-Rassias stability originated from the Th.M. Rassias' stability theorem that appeared in his paper: On the stability of the linear mapping in Banach spaces, Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 72 (1978), 297-300. Its content is divided into the following sections: 1. Introduction and preliminaries. 2. Approximate isomorphisms in $C^*$-algebras. 3. Approximate isomorphisms in Lie $C^*$-algebras. 4. Approximate isomorphisms in $JC^*$-algebras. 5. Stability of derivations on a $C^*$-algebra. 6. Stability of derivations on a Lie $C^*$-algebra. 7. Stability of derivations on a $JC^*$-algebra.

  • We deal with a Finsler space $F^n$ with an approximate infinite series $({\alpha},\;{\beta})$-metric $L({\alpha},\;{\beta})$ = ${\beta}{\sum}_{k=0}^{r}(\frac{\alpha}{\beta})^k$ where ${\alpha}<{\beta}$. We introduced a Finsler space $F^n$ with an infinite series $({\alpha},{\beta})$-metric $L({\alpha},\;{\beta})=\frac{\beta^2}{\beta-\alpha}$ and investigated various geometrical properties at [6]. The purpose of the present paper is devoted to finding the condition for a Finsler space $F^n$ with an approximate infinite series $({\alpha},\;{\beta})$-metric above to be a Douglas space.

  • In this paper, an approximate sojourn time distribution is obtained for cyclic service systems. We consider symmetric and limited service systems in which each queue has an infinite capacity. The combined service time is defined which consists of the frame service time and server waiting time that is approximated by two cases of the uniform and exponential distributions. The approximate sojourn time distribution is obtained from the Pollaczek-Khinchine formula where the combined service time is used for the service time in the M/G/I model. And some numerical examples are given to validate the suggested approximate analysis.

  • The press-fit shaft is an important part used in automobiles, vessels, and trains. This study proposes an optimized design method to reduce damage that may occur in the press-fitted shaft by modifying the shape of the boss step of the press-fitted shaft. To reduce the time and cost of running the optimized design method, an approximate design optimization is applied and an optimized algorithm is generated using a genetic algorithm that is widely used in engineering fields and an approximate model using a response surface method. The planned experiments for the data that are needed to generate the approximate model use a central composite design (CCD) and Latin hypercube sampling (LHS), and the results of the approximate optimization using the above two design of experiments are to be compared.

  • This paper presents a study on the position tracking control of robot system on the uncertain elastic base. The elastic base is modeled as a virtual robot which has passive joints and the control strategy is using approximate Jacobian operators. Jacobian operators represent the overall robot system including base movement. However, because we don't know the base movement we can't estimate the jacobian operators directly. The control algorithm is proposed which uses only Jacobian operators of a real robot as approximate Jacobian operators. The measured errors from external sensor are compensated by approximate Jacobian operators. The simulation results of a single-axis robot system show that the control strategy can be used for position tracking.

  • In a competitive and globalized business environment, the need for the green products becomes stronger. To meet these trends, the environmental assessment besides delivery, cost and quality of products should be considered as an important factor in new product development phase. In this paper. a knowledge-based approximate life cycle assessment system (KALCAS) for the collaborative design environment is developed to assess the environmental impacts in context of product concept development. It aims at improving the environmental efficiency of the product using artificial neural networks consisting of high-level product attributes and LCA results. The overall framework of the collaborative environment including KALCAS is proposed. This architecture uses the CO environment to allow users on a wide variety of platforms to access the product data and other related information. It enables us to trade-off the evaluation results between the objectives of the product development including the approximate environmental assessment in the collaborative design environment.

  • Approximate lofting or skinning is one of practical surface modeling techniques well used in CAD and reverse engineering applications. Presented in this paper is a method for approximately lofting a given set of curves wihin a specified tolereance. It is based on refitting input curves simultaneously on a common knot vector and interpolating them to get a resultant NURBS surface. A concept of reducing the number of interior knots of the common knot vector is well adopted to acquire more compact representation for the resultant surface. Energy minimization is newly introduced in curve refitting process to stabilize the solution of the fitting problem and get more fair curve. The proposed approximate lofting provides more smooth surface models and realizes more efficient data reduction expecially when the parameterization and compatibility of input curves are not good enough. The method has been successfully implemented in a new CAD/CAM product VX Vision? of Varimetrix Corporation.

  • This paper is to investigate the approximate confidence limits of the reliability performances (such as failure rate, reliability function and average life) for a cold standby series system. The Bayesian approximate upper confidence limit of failure rate is obtained firstly, and next Bayesian approximate lower confidence limits for reliability function and average life are presented. The expressions for calculating Bayesian lower confidence limits of the reliability function and average life are also obtained, and an illustrative example is examined numerically by means of the Monte-Carlo simulation. Finally, the accuracy of confidence limits is discussed.
